And what effect it has

What are scars...

Scars are areas of fibrous tissue (fibrosis) that replace normal skin after injury. A scar results from the biological process of wound repair in the skin and other tissues of the body. Thus, scarring is a natural part of the healing process.

How do they affect in sport...

Scar tissue, if allowed to build up, can cause significant restriction in the performance of a muscle as it has a less elastic quality.

I broke my wrist out in France and the scar tissue around it caused huge problems for my flexibility. It got broken down with acupuncture and improved significantly.

On a sportsman I can imagine it would have a massive impact. Also makes reinjuring it more likely.
