Reading have joined Leeds United in the race to sign Cardiff left back Declan John, who is currently on loan at Rangers, according to the Football Insider.

Both Reading and Leeds United are both interested in on-loan Welsh youngster Declan John who is on loan at the moment to Rangers and is going to return to Cardiff in January, with the biggest choice of his young football life, whether to stick with the Welsh Capital Cardiff City or to move onto either Leeds United or Reading.

John is on a season long loan deal at Ibrox, after falling out of favour under Neil Warnock. His impressive performances have not gone unnoticed, with both Leeds and Reading reportedly making him their primary target for a new left back.

Vurnon Anita, Gaetano Berardi, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Stuart Dallas have all played their so far this season, but none are seen as long term solutions.

Reading are desperate to sign a left back in January, with key man Jordan Obita ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee ligament injury. Youngster Omar Richards is the only recognised left back, and Chris Gunter has often filled the void this season.

The 22-year-old progressed through the ranks at boyhood club Cardiff City and has made 42 appearances for the Bluebirds. Since his debut in 2012, he has struggled to nail down a consistent first team spot at the club.

He has had three loan spells away from the club during his time at the Bluebirds, with the first coming at Barnsley. He made 9 appearances for the Tykes and subsequently returned back to City at the end of the season.

John also spent a month at Chesterfield where he appeared 6 times for the club. His performances at the Spireites caught the eye of his parent club and was thus recalled for the remainder of the season.

John’s longest run in the Cardiff side came under former manager Paul Trollope, but upon his sacking John became a bit part player under current boss Neil Warnock. In the summer he joined Rangers on loan and impressed massively. He has played ten times for the club, scoring and assisting on two occasions.

Rangers are desperate to keep John until the end of his loan spell, but with Championship sides calling he maybe tempted to return to England. Both Leeds and Reading have earmarked him as a key target in January.

I personally think, Declan John has a future with Cardiff City, partly because of the Welsh connection, but of course because he has a great talent and has a bright future in Cardiff, and I hope Neil Warnock can see this when he returns, maybe Warnock might give him a run, in the FA Cup.

Another topic that has been done to death. The only manager that really played him was OGS and we know what we think of him as a gaffa.

Should have been moved on long time a go and he has more than enough chances to prove himself

out of contract at end of this season and on loan until then..its same as Le Fondre and Adeyemi last season. techinically Cardiff players but in reality not coming back...and not joining Leeds or Reading this window either.

As said above, he’s at Rangers until the end of the season so not going anywhere else until then at least.

Don’t think there’s anything in this story.

Also agree that he needs to leave permanently, long overdue. Five managers have now passed in his time, and none of them made him a first-choice starter.

I'm sure I read somewhere that there was an option for either side to cancel the loan in January??

Even if that’s true, I can’t see either team cancelling the loan.

This looks like someone has pulled a random player’s name and two random clubs name’s out of a hat and put it in an article.
