NEIL WARNOCK ON BOROS SPENDING BIG TIME

But money spent adds pressure?

NEIL WARNOCK:

"I think he chairman said they will bash this league."

"Steve Gibson’s a super guy, a fabulous chairman, the way he’s supported it, but it’s a difficult league to smash no matter how much you spend."

"The Championship is not like any other. Money helps but it’s still difficult to get it right. It’s still about building a team ethic and spirit and that’s why I have to praise the lads who’ve come in and fitting into the way we wanted. We might not have got the individuals others have got, because you do pay for that sort of quality, but we make up for it in other ways."

"That’s the beauty of the league. I listened to Mick McCarthy the other day about Fulham being the best team they played after pasting Ipswich and then Fulham go and lose to Burton. It shows you can’t make sense out of the league and that’s why I love it so much."

On being Boro's dug-out nemesis

NEIL WARNOCK:

"I did smile at that. I know the chairman quite well up there, and last year at Rotherham we played them on our good run. They should have been six up at half time, the chances they missed, they were so superior, but we got in at 0-0 and changed things round and won 1-0. On the way home I’d get a text from the chairman saying ‘I just knew you’d sort it out at half-time!’ It’s a mutual respect."

"He’s been fantastic for the mangers up there, a lovely club, really well run, probably goes under the radar on the North East. I’m looking forward to it, good stadium, good fans, another challenge for us."

i'm not sure what it is, but one of the differences with the championship and the PL is that a team can routinely go from bottom 6 to top 6 within a season. a good manager can make the world of difference at this level, as colin has showed, as there is not a huge difference between the spending power of the top clubs and the lesser clubs.

there's a saying - spending is no guarantee of success, but not spending is a guarantee of failure.

you just have to look at teams like villa who have spent £10m + on a number of players, and compare this to our team built on a relative shoestring.
