Why ex-Cardiff City striker is 'convinced' the Bluebirds will get a result at Middlesbrough - Gazette Live

Neil Warnock will relish the idea of his side being written off after one bad result and won't be hoping for a big performance at Boro, he'll be expecting one!

And for that reason, Cardiff City pundit Nathan Blake is "convinced" the Bluebirds will get a result at the Riverside on Saturday.

Cardiff were replaced at the top of the table by Wolves at the weekend after slipping to a 1-0 defeat in the televised game at Birmingham on the Friday night. That came on the back of a 0-0 draw at home to Derby ahead of the international break.

But rather than feel concerned ahead of what, on paper, looks to be a tough trip to Teesside, former striker Blake, now a columnist for WalesOnline, says Warnock will be rubbing his hands together at the prospect of seeing his side bounce back to form.

Blake says the lack of a midweek fixture will have angered and frustrated Warnock, who will have wanted his side to right the wrongs of that St Andrews display as quickly as possible.

Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock
"That’s why I’m convinced Cardiff will get something at Boro," says Blake, who made more than 130 appearances for Cardiff early in his career.

"After a defeat and a disappointing performance, the toughness of the next fixture, it’s perfect for Warnock and what this team is about.

"He’ll relish the thought of people watching that Birmingham match and saying things – after only one game, mind – like it’s starting to come apart a bit. Boro are a good side and it’s a tricky place to go, but he’ll be rubbing his hands. He won’t be hoping for a big performance, he’ll be expecting one."

Blake adds: "I try and picture myself in that dressing room and there’ll be a bit of anger, a bit of frustration at not having a midweek game to put it right quicker – and that’ll be driven into them from Warnock, Blackwell and Jepson.

"It’ll be one message, that togetherness showing itself, and I expect it to be reflected in the players."

Only Wolves and Fulham have picked up more points on the road than Cardiff so far this season.

Although Warnock's side lost at Birmingham last time out, they've already won at Sunderland and Burton and are the only team to beat leaders Wolves at Molineux.

"As disappointed as I was up at Birmingham on Friday, I only had to look at the dugout at St Andrew’s to make me think that we won’t see that type of performance at Middlesbrough," added Blake.

"And I don’t mean just Warnock. Warnock is the boss at Cardiff, make no mistake, but he’s got a couple of men with him (Kevin Blackwell and Ronnie Jepson) who, when you put the three of them together, really underline why Cardiff have got an edge on a lot of sides in this division."
