About Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough Football Club is a professional association football club based in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England. They are currently competing in the EFL Championship, the second tier of English football. Formed in 1876, they have played at the Riverside Stadium since 1995, their third ground since turning professional in 1889. They played at the Linthorpe Road ground from 1882 to 1903 and at Ayresome Park for 92 years, from 1903 to 1995.

They were one of the founding members of the Premier League in 1992 and became one of the first clubs to be relegated from it following the 1992/93 season. The club came close to folding in 1986 after experiencing severe financial difficulties before it was saved by a consortium led by then board member and later chairman Steve Gibson. The club's main rivals are Sunderland and Newcastle United. There is also a rivalry with fellow Yorkshire club Leeds United.

Middlesbrough won the League Cup in 2004, the club's first and only major trophy. They reached the 2006 UEFA Cup Final, but were beaten by Spanish side Sevilla. The club's highest league finish to date was third in the 1913–14 season and they have only spent two seasons outside the Football League's top two divisions.

The club's traditional kit is red with white detailing. The various crests throughout the club's history, the most recent of which was adopted in 2007, incorporate a lion rampant.

That's a hell of a side they've got. Massive challenger City to bounce back after Brum up there.

Be delighted with a point and ecstatic with 3.

If we can win up there it will be such a statement of intent.

I'll bet Warnock will have them well fired up.

Cardiff City have been delivered a shock injury set-back with Kadeem Harris breaking down on his first day back at full training.

And the winger looks set to remain sidelined for a further month with a fresh concern having already missed all of the Bluebirds’ storming start to the season.

The blow came after Harris inched closer to a return from the ankle surgery he underwent at the end of pre-season.

Jazz Richsrds is also still out injured.
Richards has had a similar operation to Kadeem Harris and will be out for quite a while.

Middlesbrough's star man could miss Cardiff City clash after 'unacceptable' incident -

By Tom Coleman

Tuesday 17th October 2017

Middlesbrough boss Garry Monk is facing a big decision over whether to recall winger Adama Traore for the visit of Cardiff City on Saturday.

The 21-year-old was sensationally dropped from the Boro squad for the trip to Barnsley at the weekend after turning up late for the bus to the team's hotel.

The incident is understood to have enraged the former Swansea City boss, who swiftly cut Traore out of his matchday squad. A fine is expected to follow.

It remains to be seen whether the former Aston Villa man will make a return to the squad for the visit of Cardiff on Saturday, but Monk did not hold back in his criticism of the Spaniard's behaviour after his side's 2-2 draw in South Yorkshire.

He told the Northern Echo : "In terms of Adama, he was late for the bus, and you can’t be late for the bus.

“We don’t accept that. That’s why he wasn’t in the squad. Those are the rules that every player and everyone has to abide by. We were travelling, he missed the time, and that’s why he missed the trip.

“Like always, we deal with everything in house, but there are certain rules that the group have to follow. We’re very focused on them. They’re very important to us as a group, and the standards that we set, and if you don’t come up to those standards then you’re not involved in certain situations.

“Adama missed the bus and that’s why he wasn’t here. We’ll keep everything else in house, get back to work, and focus on the next game.”

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock is likely to be hoping that Traore doesn't play, as despite his disciplinary issues he is still a potential match-winner for the Teeside outfit.

The full details of his offence last weekend are still unknown, meaning there are plenty of question marks over whether he will make an appearance on Saturday, and indeed whether he has a long-term future at the club.

It's hardly the ideal preparation for a contest against one of the Championship's early pacesetters. Then again, history suggests this will still be a tough task for Cardiff.

The Bluebirds have lost four of their last five trips to the Riverside, although Warnock will be nevertheless be demanding a reaction from his players following the disappointing defeat to Birmingham City on Friday night.

Striker Braithwaite focused on Boro-Cardiff crunch after goals in successive games

18th October 2017

Striker Martin Braithwaite is focusing only on Saturday’s home Championship clash with high-flying Cardiff City – despite scoring in successive games for Middlesbrough.

Boro are enduring a faltering run of results – no wins in the last four matches – and Garry Monk’s side are 11th in the table after 12 games.

Danish forward Braithwaite, fit again after injury, has scored in successive 2-2 draws against Brentford and Barnsley, but admits that he was not entirely happy with the share of the spoils at Oakwell.

“It was a frustrating game,” the 26-year-old told mfc.co.uk.

“It was a game we had to win so I felt a bit frustrated after, but now I’m looking forward to the next one.

“I’m not thinking too much about it now, I just want to win the next one and that’s all that’s on my mind.”

Braithwaite made an impact in his first Boro game, in the defeat at Wolves, on the opening day of the season.

But injury sidelined him until the home loss to Norwich on September 26.

Nevertheless, he is looking upwards. “Of course it’s been difficult but I like to think of myself as a positive guy and it was meant to be,” added the summer capture from French club Toulouse.

“I had to go out and work with the medical team. I set myself a goal of coming back better after my injury, and I feel I’ve done that so far.

“Personally, I feel in good shape.”

Always a great away trip :thumbright:

2-2 draw I think.

We were with you Ned :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:

I was there that night. January time wasn’t it and snowing really heavy around East Mids on the way home?

Lost 2-1 and I had work at 9 the following morning

Adama Traore has trained with his Middlesbrough teammates as normal this week and is being considered for selection against Cardiff City on Saturday, The Gazette understands.

The 21-year-old was left out of Boro's matchday squad at Barnsley four days ago after missing the team bus down to South Yorkshire.

After the draw at Oakwell, Boro boss Garry Monk revealed the winger would be dealt with "in-house" but stressed that rules are in place for every player to adhere to - and anybody who falls short in doing so will not be considered for selection.

But it is understood that a line has been drawn under the incident, with Monk happy that the situation has been resolved and keen to focus his attention on Boro's busy upcoming schedule.

Traore has trained at Rockliffe Park with the rest of the squad as normal this week, and if he catches the eye over the next 48 hours, he is set be given a reprieve against Neil Warnock's high-flying Bluebirds.

Boro have won just four games against Warnock in 37 years.

Thursday 18th October 2017

A good time for Middlesbrough to smash dug-out Nemesis Neil Warnock's historic hoodoo?

Neil Warnock strikes fear into the heart of every Teessider: he is Boro’s dug-out Nemesis.

From defeat to Notts County in the 1991 play-offs to relegation-bound Rotherham putting a torpedo into the title tilt and bringing Aitor Karanka to the brink, his frighteningly functional teams have crushed the life out of games and inflicted bruising defeats on Boro over three dark decades.

Neil Warnock - who arrives at the Riverside with Cardiff on Saturday - casts a dark shadow over the hearts of Boro fans.

To be fair, football’s much travelled arch-pragmatist has that effect on the fans of most clubs.

His direct, physical and highly effective no-frills, low thrills style has stifled, frustrated and infuriated teams at every level of the game for an eternity.

Yet it has also brought a begrudged respect - and occasional pang of envy - because football is a results driven business and the wily old fox knows exactly how to get them.

In fact, at some sorry stage of their own club’s cyclical fortunes, most fans will have considered a Faustian pact to bring him in, ignore their own ethical objections and accept the inevitable rewards of promotion or survival.

And you know if he was in charge of Boro - and he has often said he’d love the chance - you would revel in his zealous quest for victory, his bubbling touchline passions, his willingness to bleed for the club and a highly partisan view of the rules and spirit of the game that more than matches the most one-eyed fan.

For those lofty purists who see the beautiful game as something akin to balletic high art and being about the pursuit of aesthetic perfection, Warnock is pretty much the anti-Christ.

Indeed, when he was at Leeds alongside Ken Bates and El-Hadj Diouf it was suggested in some quarters that football may be the vehicle for a new Dan Brown novel and, with three of the horsemen of the Apocalypse already in place, we were only the signing of Joey Barton away from the End of Days.

An historic hoodoo over Boro

That may be over-egging the pudding but Warnock certainly brings an Old Testament fear to Boro supporters who have endured long points famines and cruel punishments.

Boro have lost to him more than any other manager in the modern era: in 14 games against six different Warnock sides over 27 years they have suffered defeat nine times.

Between Boro’s first win over him and their second was a long barren ice age of 17 years.

Neil Warnock
Boro had shrugged off the curse with successive 1-0 home wins over Leeds and QPR but then they were well and truly Warnocked at lowly Rotherham, a result that rattled the confidence of Karanka’s side and led to a dressing room bust-up and the chaos of the Lost Weekend at Charlton.

A long and barren history

Boro have won just four games against Warnock in 37 years.

One of those was the very first, John Wark getting his first goal for Boro in a 1-0 win over Notts County that was to give Colin Todd’s side an early edge in a season long battle for a play-off place.

County won the return 3-2 and beat a flat Boro over two legs in the play-offs to win promotion to division one.

Boro’s next win came on New Year’s Day 2007 when Yabuku (2) and Mark Viduka struck in a 3-1 victory over Sheffield United to square it up for the season after a 2-1 away defeat.

Over the next few years Boro then lost 1-0 at Palace, were battered 3-0 home and away to QPR under Gordon Strachan and lost twice to Leeds before Curtis Main nicked the goal in a 1-0 home win to break the hoodoo in February 2013.

Boro beat him again next time out with a 1-0 win over QPR - his second stint there - and it seemed the curse was dead.

Then Aitor’s title chasing side went to relegation-bound Rotherham, where he had arrived to act as a football defibrillator... what could possibly go wrong?

The prospects for Saturday

Warnock’s Cardiff head to Teesside having lost some of their early steam.

Despite still being in second spot they have only won two of their last seven games and last week surprisingly slumped to a 1-0 defeat at lowly Birmingham.

And they have won only one of there last four away games - and that was 2-1 at struggling Sunderland. Before that they lost at 3-0 at Preston and drew 1-1 at Fulham.

So it could be a good time to play them. Although it won’t be easy. We know exactly what to expect.

Warnock sides play to a pattern: concede possession, defend deep and scrap for every loose ball, close down but not press out and look to counter quickly, getting the ball wide and hitting the targetman early or making set-plays count. It is predictable but potentially problematic.

Boro will need to find a way through a well-drilled and highly motivated defence while not getting sucked in and being left vulnerable on the break. The lads at the back will need to be alert to lightening raids and disciplined at dead balls.

Boro will need to start sharply and set the shape and tempo of the game - and get the first goal.

And as with every game against a Warnock side, it won’t be one for the purists.
