Non-league football hooligans caught in violent pub brawl with one man knocked clean out

One man was jailed and nine others have been handed football banning orders after the fight

Football hooligan pub brawl between Tranmere and Barrow fans

A group of football hooligans were caught on CCTV violently brawling inside a pub after a clash between rival fans.

The footage shows Tranmere Rovers and AFC Barrow fans fighting just after a game had kicked off, with one man even being knocked out.

A man was jailed and nine others handed football banning orders as a result of the trouble.

Footage played in court shows the moment trouble erupted in February, at the Prenton Park pub in Merseyside, reports the Liverpool Echo .

It starts with Rovers fan Martin Dunne, who is thought to have thrown the first punch, lashing out at Brett Cihlar.

In the skirmish that follows Cihlar - the only man jailed over the trouble - is knocked out by serving soldier Liam Gretton.

All 10 men involved in the incident appeared at Liverpool Crown Court last week with Cihlar, who once had an international football banning order, locked up for four months.

Ian Criddle, Crown Advocate with MerseyCheshire Crown Prosecution Service said: “Football is a fun pastime. There is no place for this type of behaviour in or around the stadia.

“The sentences imposed and the football banning orders issued by the court show not only how seriously offences such as this are taken but also the work that goes on to ensure the match is a safe environment for decent supporters to enjoy the game.”

Jamie Lee Thomas Morris, of Bebington Road, Rock Ferry, who fights with Barrow fan Gavin Wood inside the pub, punching him along with others.

The fight broke out between rival fans

All 10 men involved in the incident appeared at Liverpool Crown Court

The 24-year-old has no previous convictions and said he acted to protect friends. He was given three months in prison, suspended for two years; a 15-day rehabilitation order and 150 hours of community service.

David Andrew Fletcher, of Price Street, Birkenhead was said to have punched Cihlar around 15 times to the head and body and stamped on him while he was on the floor.

The 23-year-old, who said he was drunk at the time of the incident and cannot remember it, also kicked Wood.

He was said to be “disgusted by his behaviour”.

He was given four months in prison, suspended for two years; a 20-day rehabilitation order; an alcohol treatment order, and ordered to do 150 hours of community service.

Martin Andrew Dunne, 49, of New Chester Road, Rock Ferry , is the first to punch Cihlar in the pub doorway - essentially triggering the trouble.

He claimed he was on the phone to his children when Cihlar approached and appeared worried he was calling other fans. Dunne, who appeared in court on a walking stick, said he lunged at Cihlar in panic and disputed claims he initiated the violence and threw a “volley” of punches.

He was handed four months in prison, suspended for two years, given a three month curfew (9pm-6am) and a 10-day rehabilitation order.

Ryan Soderberg, 21, of Prestbury Road, Prenton, exchanged punches and kicks with Cihlar, including while he was on the floor. He agreed his actions were “totally unacceptable”. He was given three months in prison, suspended for two years; a 20-day rehabilitation order and 150 hours of community service.

Luke Brown, of Meadway, Upton , Wirral , was punched at by Cihlar and punched Wood. The “family orientated” 21-year-old had no previous convictions.

He was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for two years, given a 10-day rehabilitation order and ordered to do 150 hours of community service.

The fight was caught on several of the pub's CCTV cameras
Liam Gretton, of Prenton, delivered the blow that rendered Cihlar unconscious.

The 25-year-old punched Wood and lashed out at Johnson. A serving army officer with no previous convictions, it was said he was “deeply remorseful” over his involvement.

Judge Conrad did not give him a suspended sentence because he did not want to jeopardise his career - in which he has “impressed” others.

But he warned him not to see the army as a “get out of jail” card. He was given 200 hours of community service.

Michael Kelly, 50 and of Park Road North, Birkenhead, kicked both Cihlar and Johnson - who had attempted to punch him. He had initially said he was acting in self-defence.

He was given four months in prison, suspended for two years; a curfew for two months (9pm-6am) and 150 hours of community service.

Gavin Wood, 46, of Granville Street, Barrow, was punched several times, thrown to the floor and kicked. The “family man”, who has four children, accepted he threw punches though they did not land.

He said at Barrow games fans could leave for the pub but return later, and he had wrongly thought he could do that at Tranmere. He was given four months in prison, suspended for two years; a 10-day rehabilitation order and 150 hours of community service.

Brett Cihlar, of Lincoln Street, Barrow was involved in the initial trouble and was knocked out.

Brett Cihlar, of Lincoln Street, Barrow was involved in the initial trouble with Dunne and, while he threw punches it was said his injuries - including fractured ribs - were worse than those he inflicted.

The 45-year-old has previously had an international football banning order and has received 25 sentences for a total of 39 offences. As a result of his past, he was jailed for four months and handed a six year football banning order.

David Johnson, of Holker Street, Barrow works for British Aerospace and threw a punch at Kelly that did not land.

A dad of three and union representative, the 45-year-old is not a Barrow fan but had travelled for a day out.

It was claimed he was the last to get involved, was involved the least and had just got mixed up in the trouble.

He was given three months in prison, suspended for two years; a 20-day rehabilitation order and 150 hours of community service.
