About Sunderland

Sunderland Association Football Club is an English professional football club based in the city of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. Sunderland currently plays in the EFL Championship, the second tier of English football. Since its formation in 1879, the club has won six top-flight First Division (now the Premier League) titles (1892, 1893, 1895, 1902, 1913, and 1936), a total only bettered by five other clubs, and has finished runners-up five times. The club has also won the FA Cup twice (1937 and 1973) and been runners-up twice (1913 and 1992), as well as winning the FA Community Shield in 1936 and being finalists the following year. Sunderland have also been Football League Cup finalists in 1985.

Sunderland won their first FA Cup in 1937 with a 3–1 victory over Preston North End, and remained in the top league for 68 successive seasons until they were relegated for the first time in 1958. Sunderland's most notable trophy after the Second World War was their second FA Cup in 1973, when the club secured a 1–0 victory over Leeds United. The team has won the second tier title five times in that period and the third tier title once.

Sunderland play their home games at the 49,000-capacity all-seater Stadium of Light having moved from Roker Park in 1997. The original ground capacity was 42,000 which was increased to 49,000 following expansion in 2000. Sunderland have a long-standing rivalry with their neighbouring club Newcastle United, with whom they have contested the Tyne–Wear derby since 1898. Since their most recent promotion to the Premier League in 2007, Sunderland have become one of the world's wealthiest football brands, being valued at USD $93 million in 2014, 31st in the world overall.

Stadium Of Light

In 1997, Sunderland moved to their present ground, Stadium of Light in Monkwearmouth, which was opened by Prince Andrew, Duke of York. Built with an original capacity of 42,000, it hosted its first game against Dutch team Ajax. The stadium bears a similar name to the Portuguese club Benfica's ground Estádio da Luz, albeit in a different language. Stadium expansion in 2000 saw the capacity increase to 49,000. A Davy lamp monument stands outside the stadium, and a miners banner was presented to the club by the Durham Miners' Association, as a reminder of the Monkwearmouth Colliery pit the stadium was built on.

MY OPINION:

OUR OPPONENTS ARE SUNDERLAND : Of the relegated clubs Sunderland are the least impressive & in fact not impressive at all.

Their defence is poor and their attack is quite ordinary. If winger McGeady is fit again Simon Grayson (their manager) will play him as he knows him well.

They play 4 at the back and 2 defensive midfielders with one lone striker (Vaughan - because Grabban is injured).

I will stick my neck out and say we will score from a set piece. Our worst enemy and problem will be ourselves. Few players have been way way below there best. We therefore should expect a change in attitude and personnel.

Naturally no game is easy but if Warnock chooses well (and he will) and if our players play as they can (and they will - I think) this game is ours for the taking. Conclusion : We can beat Cardiff,we will win. Will we??

"If" we can beat Cardiff . I really believe our real worst enemy (or our best friend) this saturday is ourselves.

Sunderland boss hopes for defensive boost for Cardiff City clash

Sunderland Echo

Thursday 21st September 2017

Simon Grayson hopes that his defensive options will be boosted for Saturday’s crunch game with Cardiff City, despite Marc Wilson missing the defeat to Everton with a groin problem.

The deadline day signing trained on Tuesday but was left out of last night’s 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat at Goodison Park as a precaution after suffering from a tight groin.

Grayson is hopeful it won’t keep him out of Saturday’s game at the Stadium of Light as Sunderland look to end a near 10-month winless run at home and kick-start their season.

With Tyias Browning and Brendan Galloway ineligible against their parent club, Wilson missing and Bryan Oviedo rested, Grayson fielded a makeshift defence.

Donald Love started at right-back, with Billy Jones partnering skipper Lamine Kone in the centre and Adam Matthews at left-back.

Grayson confirmed that he hopes to have Wilson available to face Cardiff, while club captain John O’Shea is also closing in on a return from a calf injury.

The Black Cats boss said: “Marc Wilson wasn’t available due to a groin problem he picked up at the weekend.

“He trained Tuesday and it just tightened up so we left him out as a precaution, but hopefully he will be back on Saturday and one or two others might be too.

“John O’Shea has done work this week, and we expect him to be back in training at the end of the week.

“We look ahead now to Cardiff, Ipswich and Preston, and they are games we are looking forward to and hopefully put some points on the board for us.”

Grayson made six changes in total with Callum McManaman, Jonny Williams and Robbin Ruiter among those first-team players rested for the trip to Merseyside.

Away Days - Travel Guide: Sunderland vs. Cardiff City

For those Cardiff Fans Travelling away to Sunderland, You can pay on the day :thumbright: :bluebird:

3,500 Away End :bluebird:

Cardiff City head to the Stadium of Light this weekend in Sky Bet Championship action...

Travel Tips

Sunderland is in the county of Tyne and Wear, North East England. City supporters face an early start for this one, with our visit to the Stadium of Light being our furthest away trip of the season. At 314 miles, the car journey to Sunderland will take approximately six hours. Fans are advised to use car parks at St. Mary’s (SR1 3AH), Sunniside (SR1 1UL) and The Bridges (SR1 3PZ), as all are just a 10 to 15 minute walk from the stadium. Parking charges apply.

The main train station in Sunderland is a 10 to 15 walk away from the Stadium, via the A1018 across the River Wear. Alternatively, travelling Bluebirds can make use of the city’s metro service, with the closest station to the Stadium being St. Peter’s. A single journey from the City centre stop to this station costs £1.70.

Away End

Stadium of Light is the biggest stadium in the Sky Bet Championship this season, with a capacity of 48,707. Opened in 1997, the stadium replaced the former home of the Black Cats, Roker Park.

The Carling North Stand serves as the Away End at Sunderland, with fans using turnstiles 69-72. Around 3,500 fans can be housed in this lofty stand, with fantastic views of the match. The ‘Red and White Review’ is the official programme of the Black Cats, available for £3.

Pies and Pints

A wide variety of food is on offer inside the concourse, including Fish & Chips for £5.50, Pies with various fillings (including Chicken Balti) for £3.50, Cornish Pasties and Jumbo Sausage Rolls both for £3.

Alcohol is also available inside the Stadium of Light, in the form of Carling Lager for £4, Carling Cider for £3.80, Worthington’s (£3.80) and various wines for £3.90. Sunderland also offer a meal deal of 2 Pies and 2 Pints for £12.

The club have recently opened a Fanzone outside the ground, which welcomes both home and away fans. Alongside food and drink outlets there is plenty on offer for both sets of supporters, including live music, a big screen showing highlights and classic matches and special appearances from former and current players. The Fanzone opens three hours before kick-off and closes an hour after the full-time whistle.

Food for Thought

A number of local pubs are welcoming towards away fans, including The Albion on Victor Street and the Colliery Tavern. Another option with plenty of recommendations is the Harbour View, about 15-20 minutes away from the Stadium. Along with some fantastic views of the coast, the pub offers a range of ales and a special matchday menu.

For those travelling Bluebirds with a bit of time on their hands, make sure to visit one of Sunderland’s best restaurants before or after the match. Highly recommended is the Asian eatery Royal Thai Restaurant (which caters for vegetarian and gluten-free customers), along with the popular sandwich shop Deli and Dips.

Tourist Time

There are a number of quirky and unique attractions in Sunderland that visiting fans should visit if they have spare time over the weekend. The famous Winter Garden is an indoor spectacle that houses over 2000 plants. Alternatively, the National Glass Centre offers ‘glass blowing’ demonstrations amongst other glass-based attractions.

Sunderland vs Cardiff City

Cardiff are third in the table, but level on points with both Wolves and Leeds so will be looking to regain top spot at the Stadium of Light. Again, on paper, facing Sunderland appears to be an ideal fixture for the Bluebirds as Simon Grayson's men have not won since August and have lost four of their last five Championship games. But the Black Cats are facing a Cardiff side that have not won in three either and have not kept a clean sheet since the second weekend of the season. Sunderland need to react as defeat could see them fall into the bottom three, and we expect them to put up a brave fight - but maybe come up just short.

Manager Simon Grayson has called on the Sunderland players to return three points in the home tie against Cardiff City this weekend.

Hosting Neil Warnock's boys at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, we are yet to pick up a home win during the 2017/18 campaign and Grayson would dearly like to adjust the record books that read our last victory came in December in a one nil win over Watford.

Speaking to the Official Site as he met with the media to discuss the upcoming game, Grayson explained that everyone was determined to turn our home form around.

'The team at Everton was always going to be selected with one eye on the weekend. Some players weren`t available, some needed a rest and others needed game time out there, and it was nice for Ethan Robson to make his debut and what a place to make it.'

He went on to say.

'We wanted to try and win the game but we didn`t do that and now we`ll get back to the north east and prepare for the weekend. We want three points and we want to break that hoodoo of not having won at home for such a long time.'

I'd imagine they'll be more to come from Grayson's press conference, but he ended by saying.

'It`s going to be a tough test against Cardiff City but if we get everyone firing and play with the tempo we can do, while also defending better than we have done tonight, then we`ve got a good chance of winning it.'

WOW LOOK AT THIS FOR CITY :thumbright:

Sunderland stat

Sunderland have not actually won a home match in the league since December 2016... no victories in front of their own fans in 2017! Wow.

That should give Cardiff some serious hope ahead of tomorrow’s game.
