Aston Villa poised to complete John Terry transfer swoop this weekend when his Chelsea deal runs out
By James Nursey

Birmingham have been outbid by their arch-rivals over ex-England captain dropping into the Championship to avoid having to face the club he has played for since 1999 next season

John Terry is ready to sign for Aston Villa (his preferred destination) when his Chelsea contract expires at the weekend.

Former England captain Terry becomes a free agent this Saturday and is set to drop into the Championship after almost two decades in the first team at Stamford Bridge.

The Villans are out-bidding their Second City rivals Birmingham with a £5million, one-year deal also including huge bonuses if centre-back Terry, 36, helps them win promotion back to the Premier League.

Mirror Sport understands Blues boss Harry Redknapp has this week become resigned to missing out on the new champions' iconic 'Captain. Leader. Legend.'

Villa's Chinese owner, Dr Tony Xia, has made it a personal mission to beat Birmingham to Terry’s signature.

Despite top-flight interest from West Brom, Swansea and Bournemouth, Terry is willing to drop into the Championship as he fancies a new challenge with potential promotion and the chance to lift more silverware.

He is also reluctant to play against his beloved Chelsea next season with another Premier League club, and also doesn’t relish going somewhere with the potential to land him in a relegation scrap.

It has all put Villa firmly in the box-seat to land his signature — despite interest from overseas, too.

Terry and his agent were recently pictured golfing with Villa manager Steve Bruce and his son, Hull defender Alex Bruce, in Portugal.

Harry Redknapp also wanted to bring Terry to the Second City, but looks to have missed out

Terry could potentially be announced then too in what would be a huge boost to the club, who came 13th last term after finishing rock-bottom of the Premier League 12 months earlier.

If Birmingham do end up missing out on Terry, Redknapp is set to step up his interest in Barnsley's 26-year-old captain and centre-back Marc Roberts.
"If you think what I say is 'offensive' to you, you should hear what I keep to myself...!"

Wonder what his wages are???

Every striker in the championship will raise their game when playing against him...might work against Villa this signing

John Terry latest: Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce tells ex-Chelsea star he could succeed him

ASTON VILLA have told John Terry he could be next in line to take over as manager of the club after Steve Bruce moves on.

Terry, out-of-contract after leaving Chelsea at the end of last season, has been offered a one-year contract worth £60,000 a week by Championship side Villa – plus a £2million bonus if they can clinch promotion back to the Premier League.

But manager Bruce, who is pushing hard for the former Chelsea and England captain to join him at Villa Park, has also tried to tempt Terry by persuading him he would be in pole position to eventually succeed him for his first managerial job.
