Sky sources understand Nigel Pearson is on a shortlist of three possible candidates to take over as manager of Middlesbrough.
Chairman Steve Gibson is planning for the Championship after Boro were relegated a fortnight ago. He has yet to decide his primary target, though, we understand.
Pearson joined Boro as a player in 1994 - the same year that Gibson became chairman, and the two men enjoyed a lot of success together; Pearson became club captain, and had two promotions and three domestic cup finals in his four years at the club.
Pearson is currently on holiday but initial discussions have taken place with his representatives, and more formal talks are planned after he returns at the weekend
