Police say there will be no changes to security operation for Champions League final in wake of Manchester attack

Tuesday 23rd May 2017

Champions League final barriers appear around Cardiff city centre

There will be 2,000 police officers on the streets of Cardiff on the day of the Champions League final - but as of yet no changes to the security operation in the wake of the attack in Manchester.

At a press conference in Bridgend this afternoon, South Wales Police's Acting Chief Constable Richard Lewis said officers were ready for the event.

ACC Lewis said that in the week of the final, 6,000 officers will be used "to ensure that the public of Cardiff and visitors from Italy and Spain and the world feel safe and secure."

He said there was no specific threat in relation to the final being held in Cardiff on June 3 but the force will continue to review their arrangements.

He said as of yet, no guidance has come to him as a result of a specially convened COBRA meeting in Westminster this morning.

ACC Lewis said that this morning officers assigned to security for the sporting event were "shocked"."

He said: "What it does is gallavanise you. You dot the i's and cross the t's. We want to make this event a success."

He said officers have been preparing for the final since last summer but that from next week people will see a noticeable rise in officers on the streets.

He said officers have been searching manholes and lampposts for any devices which could have been hidden in advance.

A secure zone will be created around the stadium and people will not be able to take bags with them into the stadium.

From midnight on June 1, security barriers which have been installed across the city will be activated.

He said police will be using their powers to search if necessary.

"There will be a number of different police responses, overt and covert," he said.

ACC Lewis said the event has always been planned in terms of a "severe threat level".

"We responded very quickly to the events in Manchester last night and we were quick to increase our visibility at iconic locations across the force area."

Officers will remain out in public over the bank holiday and until the Champions League final.

"We are ready for this event," he said. "We all know there have been atrocities across mainland Europe, not least at the Berlin markets but Westminster too. Not directly related the bombing of the Borussia Dortmund bus at the quarter final stage of the Champions League. "

"That had an impact and throughout that period and throughout these issues we have continued to review and evolve our planning in response to any new intelligence.

"Our whole response is about being led by intelligence".

He reiterated advice that only those with tickets should travel into the city on the day of the final.

"The message up to now is not going to change - people need to think long and hard about coming to Cardiff if they haven't a ticket.

"Only come to Cardiff if you absolutely must or you have a ticket."

He urged people to report anything suspicious to police and to be alert. The anti-terrorism hotline is available on 0800 789321.
