Craig Bellamy: Ex-Cardiff City striker rejoins club as player development manager

BBC

Tuesday 13th December 2016

Ex-Wales captain Craig Bellamy has returned to former club Cardiff City as their player development manager.

The 37-year-old ended his career with the Bluebirds in 2014 and made 91 appearances during two spells with his hometown club.

In the role, Bellamy will oversee the club's youth development as they progress to the first team.

"It's a position I feel passionately about and one that comes with huge responsibility," Bellamy said.

"To be appointed in such a role is a fantastic honour for me."

Bellamy played for seven clubs in the Premier League and made 78 appearances for Wales before retiring from international football in October 2013.

During two spells with Liverpool, he won the 2006 Community Shield and the 2011-12 League Cup, where they beat Cardiff City on penalties in the final.

The elevation of Bellamy from volunteer academy coach to a first team role has long been desired by many Cardiff City fans and many see him as a manager in waiting. He is reckoned to have real coaching potential, but has always insisted it will be in his own time. Plenty will see this as a first step on to the coaching/managerial ladder - and Cardiff utilising a talent too good to be squandered.

A season later, he moved to Cardiff City on a permanent basis and helped the club win promotion to the Premier League for the first time.

The club's executive director and CEO Ken Choo said: "The Club has recently undertaken an internal restructure of its academy and development programmes.

"With this firmly in mind, it's felt that having somebody of Craig's stature in this role can be of huge significance to us moving forward.

"I know that Neil [Warnock] feels Craig's influence here can create greater synergy between our youth players and the first-team with the ultimate goal of bringing players through to senior football."

Wez, he'll be in charge of the whole academy. It's a fantastic coup for us. I love hearing Bellers talking football as he's very passionate and his knowledge and understanding of the game is outstanding. Very happy with this bit of news.

Annis, he'll be our next manager I'm certain of that now. He'll learn a hell of a lot doing the Academy job as Warnock says he wants to bring the first team and the Academy closer together. Well happy. :bluescarf:

smart move by tan, the youth academy is being stripped apart, and by hiring bellamy, we all sit back, applaud and say well done.

Tan can't lose.

Bells is doing it for next to nothing.

Bells wants experience, does not need the money,Bells has passion, will make local kids want to join and Bells has to start somewhere and loves bringing younger players through.

Bells has been coaching our younger kids for nothing, just loving it and now wants to step up a gear and still live local :thumbright: :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:

Also Bells won't need to really answer to anyone.

It will be interesting when Bells asks for money to be invested?

Spot on, it's also well documented on his return to us as a player that after years of moving about the country he's not interested in living anywhere else. It's true he will be a pull to kids, has passion to succeed. The club is now putting good football people in charge.
