BRISTOL FAN GETS 4 YEAR BAN/180 HRS/£700 FINE AT CARDIFF MAGISTRATES COURT

The Bristol City fan was arrested amid raucous pre-match scenes

A football fan who was jumping up and down at Cardiff City’s ground, holding a lit flare and chanting “Johnson says bounce around the ground” has received a four year banning order.

Jordan McQuade, 22, from Ashton Drive, Bristol, pleaded guilty to possessing a flare at a Cardiff City versus Bristol City match when he appeared at Cardiff Magistrates Court.

He was arrested before kick-off at the game on October 14 after he was seen jumping up and down in the away concourse with the flare.

The moment Bristol City fans set off flares was caught on camera amid a raucous pre-match atmosphere at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Around 2,000 Bristol fans made the short trip to South Wales for the Severnside derby, which saw Neil Warnock’s first game in charge.

As well as the banning order, which prohibits him from attending any football match at home or abroad for the next four years, McQuade was also ordered to complete 180 hours of unpaid work and pay costs totalling £705.

Breaching a Football Banning Order can result in a fine or a prison sentence of up to six months.

PC Christian Evans of the Football Intelligence Unit said: “The use of pyrotechnics and flares at football matches has become an increasing problem again in recent years, and I hope sentences like this send out the message that such behaviour is dealt with seriously.

“In mitigation, McQuade claimed to have picked up the flare from the floor at the stadium, and that he was not the person who brought the potentially dangerous weapon in to the ground.

“What I want to make perfectly clear is that you don’t need to be the person who bought the flare, carried it in to the ground, or lit it. If you are caught with a flare or any similar item that poses a threat to other supporters at the ground, you will be arrested and prosecuted.

“There is simply no place for them at our football grounds.

“The overwhelming majority of football fans are well-behaved and passionate about their teams, and ensuring their safety while they enjoy the game is our number one priority.”

But they don't arrest foreign fans for doing exactly the same in the UK and they light up loads?

Same punishment for everyone then.

I was thinking that Chief. Not exactly the crime of the century, it's just another case of the system penalising football fans. If that was Rugby fans it would be boys being boys.
