History and description

Ipswich Town played their first match at Portman Road in 1884, though at that time it was only a bare pitch with a pavilion of the cricket club they shared the ground with.

In the early 20th century a first small wooden stand got built, but it took until 1936 when Ipswich turned professional that proper terraces were built.

Portman Road got gradually improved and expanded from the 1950s, with a new West Stand opening in 1957 and the new Portman Stand in 1971.

The stadium set its record attendance in 1975 when a total of 38,010 spectators attended an FA Cup match between Ipswich and Leeds. The West Stand got further expanded in 1982, but capacity had already started to decline due to safety measures.

Portman Road got converted into an all-seater in 1992, resulting in a capacity of 22,500 seats.

Promotion to the Premier League in the late 1990s made funds available for further improvements, which led to the complete rebuilding of both stands behind the goals in 2000 and 2002.

PREVIEW: Tractor Boys look to get season back on track against Cardiff

Ipswich Town

News 72

Thursday 8th December 2016

Cardiff City will look to escape the relegation spots of the Sky Bet Championship with a win against an out-of-form Ipswich Town side at Portman Road on Saturday afternoon.

City currently sit one point behind twenty-first placed Blackburn Rovers, however Cardiff have won just twice away from home so far this season.

Although, Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich team are also on a torrid run of form, with the Tractor Boys picking up just three wins and two draws from their previous eight League games – meaning the Blues sit five points above the relegation places but seven points from the final play-off spot.

With the Tractor Boys slipping further down the League table, many Blues fans are calling this game a must-win should McCarthy wish to retain his job at Portman Road – especially after Ipswich were beaten comfortably 2-0 at Bristol City.

Despite the Blues lacking in form, they should take notice of the Bluebirds’ dreadful defensive record – having already conceded 30 times this season – whereas the Blues have conceded the fourth least amount of goals this season.

At the opposite end of the pitch, however, the Tractor Boys have been unable to gain any consistency in front of goal with the Blues having scored the second least amount of goals in the League.

Neil Warnock will need to be vary of the Blues’ strong record at home against the Bluebirds, with Cardiff last’s win at Portman Road being the 2-1 victory in December 2008.

A win for Warnock’s side could propel the Bluebirds out of the relegation places, whereas a win for the Blues could ease the pressure mounting on boss Mick McCarthy.

Ipswich Town Vs Cardiff City: Match Preview

By Jamie Kemble

Date and Time: Saturday 10th December (15.00)

Venue: Portman Road

Referee: James Adcock

Cardiff City take on Ipswich Town as they look to build on an impressive draw against high-flyers Brighton last weekend.

Cardiff City make the long journey East to face Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich Town as they look to build on their draw against Brighton last time out. The Bluebirds go into the game having only won one game in four, leaving them still desperate to climb out of the relegation zone.

The Bluebirds have lost both of their last two away games but they were against Newcastle United and Aston Villa respectively. Neil Warnock will know the importance of taking confidence into the rest of the month and a win against Ipswich would be a good start.

Ipswich Town find themselves five points ahead of Saturday’s opponents and head into this one in a mixed run of form. The Tractor Boys have lost two and won two of their last five games, drawing the remainder.

Last time out, Ipswich were beaten by Bristol City at Ashton Gate, despite going into the game on the back of a fine 3-0 win over QPR.

Mick McCarthy’s men are currently positioned 16th in the Sky Bet Championship, five points above the relegation zone and seven points from the play-offs.

When the two teams met last season, Cardiff come out on top with a 1-0 win thanks to Bruno Ecuele-Manga’s header. The teams shared a goalless draw in the earlier meeting, at Portman Road.

LAST TIME OUT

Cardiff 0-0 Brighton

Brighton dominated a game in which a plucky Cardiff managed to hold on and snatch a vital point.

The away side had 67% of the possession and had twelve attempts on goal compared to Cardiff’s ten.

Brighton will feel like they were unlucky not to come away with the three points, but ultimately, Cardiff put in an impressive defensive performance and deserved the point that they received out of the game.

MICK MCCARTHY GIVES IPSWICH INJURY UPDATE AHEAD OF CARDIFF CLASH

08/12/16

Mick McCarthy has told Ipswich Town fans – via the club’s official website – that Brett Pitman is fit and ready to make his return for this Saturday’s clash with Cardiff City.

Brett Pitman has been out for ten weeks with an ankle injury but he made his return when playing 90 minutes for the under-23 side against Huddersfield’s youngsters.

The Jersey man suffered an ankle injury during Ipswich’s 1-0 loss to Leeds United back in September.

After training all week, Pitman is available for selection as Mick McCarthy prepares to host Neil Warnock’s relegation struggling Cardiff City side.

Meanwhile Christophe Berra should also be fit for this weekend.

The Scotland international suffered a cut to the foot following a challenge from Bristol City’s Aaron Wilbraham last weekend but he has recovered and should be clear to play.

It’s not all good news for Ipswich fans, though, as Giles Coke, Luke Hyam and Tommy Smith remain sidelined.

Another setback for Jazz Richards

Neil Warnock:

"Don’t ask me about Jazz, I feel sorry for him really. He’s not had a day’s training since I’ve been here."

"He started f running last week but I’ve had no updates so as far as I’m aware, he’s aware, he’s nowhere the first team at the minute. What can you say? It’s just injury after injury at the moment. Knee, calf, three weeks later it’s the other calf. I don’t ask now because it upsets me!"

"I’m hoping they wrap him up and give him to me as a Christmas present!"

Warnock's verdict on Mick McCarthy

Neil Warnock:

"Mick’s done a fabulous job, I always think it’s like when people shout for Wenger’s head, be careful what you wish for. If they’d [Ipswich] spent millions and millions fair enough. He rang me in the summer and told him to sign [Grant] Ward, I told him to sign him, I hope he’s not playing tomorrow! He asked me about the lad and he did brilliantly for me at Rotherham so I was pleased to see it."

Neil Warnock's Cardiff City side go in search of a vital three points against Ipswich Town today that would see them climb out of the Championship's bottom three.

The Bluebirds play three times in the space of a week having won only once in their last five league games.

They are currently five points behind 16th placed Ipswich ahead of today's meeting and are set to be boosted by the return of Lee Pelter who is available again after missing the 0-0 draw with Brighton through suspension - but doubts remain over the fitness of Rickie Lambert who did not play last time out.

Cardiff have won only twice in their last 20 trips to Portman Road but collected four points in the two fixtures against Mick McCarthy's side last season.

So can they pick up a vital three points and climb out of the relegation zone?

Stay with us for all the latest team news, updates and reaction.

Ipswich Town Vs Cardiff City: Man in the middle

James Adcock of Nottingham will take charge of Cardiff’s clash against Ipswich at Portman Road on Saturday.

Adcock has refereed the Bluebirds on three previous occasions all of which have been away from home in the 2014/15 season.

He refereed Cardiff’s 1-1 draw to Fulham, the 3-2 defeat to Norwich and the 3-1 Victory over Rotherham.

He is yet to referee Cardiff this season but he was originally appointed to take charge of Cardiff’s match against Huddersfield three weeks ago before he was replaced by Tim Robinson.

He last match was the FA Cup second round tie between Curzton Ashton and AFC Wimbledon. Wimbledon eventually won the match 4-3 thanks to a superb late comeback.

In his 18 matches in all competitions, he has issued 52 yellow cards and one red card. He has also awarded four penalties.

Adcock will be assisted by Nick Hopton and Nigel Lugg while the Fourth Official is League One and Two referee Charles Breakspear.
