Williams and Varney in fitness boost but Town go down at Portman Road

Jonny Williams played the full 90 minutes as the U23s went down against Cardiff at Portman Road.

The Wales international, who had a cameo 10 minute run out in the defeat at Newcastle at the weekend, showed some neat touches and had a couple of runs at goal.

It was another step down the road to full fitness for the midfielder, who is on loan from Crystal Palace until the end of the season, after being sidelined for more than two months with ankle ligament damage.

Luke Varney also came through the full game having been out for three weeks with a hamstring problem.

Teddy Bishop and Paul Digby were other first-team players in action against the Bluebirds but Dean Gerken was Town’s stand-out player on the night, making two or three excellent saves.

The ‘keeper couldn’t prevent Eli Phipps grabbing a winner for the visitors though, the Cardiff number nine converting a cross at the far post.
