On Lambert's replacement

WARNOCK: We’ve got a few options. Lex [Immers] did well yesterday. [Marouane] Chamakh has been under the weather illness wise and Pilkington did well at Forest.
I’m quite happy with whoever we decide to go with.

RALLS | "IT'S ANOTHER BIG GAME NOW"

Cardiff City Official Site

Friday October 28th

Ahead of Cardiff City’s home clash with Wigan Athletic this Saturday afternoon, Joe Ralls addressed the assembled press and media at the Vale Resort to preview the match.

The Bluebirds midfielder praised City’s recent performances since the arrival of Neil Warnock, and called for the Bluebirds to fight for another three points against the Latics at CCS.

“We’re on the back of three good results," said Joe. "So if we can hopefully get another one that would stand us in good stead going forward.

“The boys know all their roles and responsibilities and we’re becoming really hard to beat, I think. We’ve got quality in the squad too. We’ve been solid, creating chances and getting goals – that’s what you need to win football games.

“Me, Gunnar and Whitts have got to be solid in there, and when we get the ball, he’s given me the licence to go forward and get involved – I’ve really enjoyed that at the moment. With the boys in front of us and the back four, we’ve got good balance in the team.

“It's another big game now. It’s going to be a real tough one and we’re going to have to be right at it again to get the three points."

Starting role for Pilks

So it’s a return to that centre forward role for Anthony Pilkington in the absence of big Rickie and Craig Noone starts out wide with those twinkle toes.

It will be interesting to see how much Noone and Junior Hoilett can get forward to support the front man, but otherwise few shocks in Warnock’s starting XI.

Early pressure

It’s a good start for Wigan, all in white with red socks attacking the Canton End, who foray forward down the left through Wildschut but the Cardiff defence get it away.

Good intensity to the start of the game, possession high up the pitch on the left side, but unable to get the perfect delivery.

DANGER!! Excellent save and well held by Adam Bogdan to deny Anthony Pilkington's header from a Peter Whittingham corner

DANGER!! Another save by Bogdan from Pilkington!! @StephenWarnock3 well placed to clear behind for a corner.

Close for Pilks and Bamba

Bogdan has to save well this time as Pilkington spins into space in the box and shoots from a tight angle.

The ginger-haired keeper saves it well and from the resulting corners there are appeals that a Sol Bamba header has crossed the line.

The officials say no. Better from the Bluebirds!

Early days here at the CCS but Wigan absolutely cannot get near Cardiff at set-pieces. Looks a matter of time in that department.

Tackle

Helluva tackle from Stephen Warnock to dispossess Noone on the right, which sets up a Wigan attack. It’s played in towards Will Grigg but Amos collects safely.

Well worked

Great curling ball by Whitts to Noone... into Pilkington... but Cardiff can’t work a shooting chance.

Excellent stuff from the attacking four there. Another corner - this time the Latics nod it clear after a melee in the box.

‘Neil Warnock’s Barmy Army!’ chant the Canton faithful. They’re watching their team take this game by the scruff of the neck early in the first half.

Bennett tries to slide one into Pilkington and then Noone finds space in the box but Wigan eventually find a clearance.

Latics facing a lot of high deliveries from wide positions, dealing with them well so far through

How did it take 20 minutes? Wigan fans burst into song with ‘Will Grigg’s on fire’ but if I’m honest, their star striker has barely been in the action.

The visitors are now enjoying a small spell of possession in the Cardiff half.

Gunnarsson good again

He’s been the Bluebirds’ main man since Warnock took over. So no surprises to see the Ice Man dominate this game as well. He’s sitting in front of that back four, clearing away anger danger.

End-to-end currently with Latics coming back into the match more. Still goalless. (0-0)

Nothing for Wigan

Nothing doing for Wigan there despite a inch-perfect long ball from Warnock into Wildschut. There’s no space for the Latics’ forwards to operate in. None at all. Credit to Cardiff for their defensive work so far. We just need to see more from their attackers.

Odd clearance...

Bamba clears up a messy piece of play from Noone, who whacked the ball back into the danger zone after the ball broke free.

Bizarre from Noone. Thankfully for Cardiff, it came to nothing.

Wigan seeing all of the ball at the moment.

No signs of a more expansive Cardiff just yet, even if it is very early days. A ball through the middle almost sees Junior Hoilett pull away from Dan Burn. The Wigan centre-backs look very much on the leggy side and I think Cardiff will try and exploit that.
