On Warnocks team selection policy

Most of my career I’ve done that. I’ve wavered a few times and it’s been the wrong decision most of the time. I generally pick what I think is the best team."

Rickie Lambert is set to miss out after picking up a ‘horrific’ injury to his lower leg last time out, although Cardiff are hoping it’s not long-term. Junior Hoilett also limped off last time out but should recover in-time to face Wigan on Saturday.

Wigan Athletic have parted company with manager Gary Caldwell just four days before the Latics are due in South Wales to take on Neil Warnock's Cardiff City side.

Caldwell leaves the club after 18 months in charge, despite leading them to the League One title just five months ago.

But the club are now 23rd in the Championship and have won just two of their 14 league matches this season.

Wigan Chairman David Sharpe said: It's undoubtedly the toughest decision I've had to make since becoming Chairman.

"We need to identify a new manager who can have an immediate impact and deliver success in the long term."

There is no news yet on who will replace Caldwell, or indeed who will manage the side this Saturday at Cardiff City Stadium.

Caldwell becomes the sixth Championship manager to lose his job this season, with Cardiff having already made the switch from Paul Trollope to Warnock during the October international break.

Warnock's side will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to four matches against the newly managerless side this Saturday.

' NEIL WARNOCK READY FOR NEW TEST '

Wigan Athletic at home will be a different test entirely to the previous three games Cardiff City have played under Neil Warnock.

In a lot of ways playing the bigger teams have suited Neil Warnock, fitting his gameplan and underdog mentality perfectly, thats what Warnock thrives on.

Wigan will be a different proposition although they do try and get it down and play, much like Forest, Wednesday and Bristol. They won’t be cavalier but they won’t sit deep and let Cardiff have the ball either.

Its easier to raise your game against bigger clubs like Sheffield Wed and Nottingham Forest and especially against local club Bristol City.
For me this could a tougher test against a side like Wigan, who are struggling in the Championship/fighting for their lives, won't have big support and are not the type of club to get the home fans Cardiff City going.

Wigan have just sacked their manager Gary Caldwell,so will come to us without a manager, many will say that is good news for City and only helps,we will wait and see?

Why Neil Warnock thinks Wigan Athletic will be Cardiff City's toughest opponents since he took over as manager

Wednesday 26th October

BY DOMINIC BOOTH

Warnock is searching for a third win in four games since taking over at Cardiff City Stadium

Neil Warnock looked at Cardiff City's fixture list with excitement rather than trepidation when he joined the club three weeks ago, but the new boss accepted Wigan Athletic might bring an unexpected challenge on Saturday.

The Bluebirds face a managerless Latics' side after Gary Caldwell was relieved of his duties on Tuesday.

That brings an added pressure for Cardiff, who slipped up against Derby County -- without then-suspended boss Nigel Pearson -- a month ago at Cardiff City Stadium.

Warnock is taking nothing for granted and, despite emerging from matches with high-flying Bristol City and Sheffield Wednesday, with a clash at league-leaders Newcastle United just around the corner, believes Wigan will be Cardiff's toughest test of the lot.

"We've got our most difficult game coming up, I think," Warnock said.

"It's not a top of the league game, but it's a very good Championship team. We've got to try to get three points before we go to Newcastle."

Whether Warnock is trying to lift pressure on his side ahead of a game they will be expected to win, remains to be seen. But with two wins and a draw since taking over from Paul Trollope, Bluebirds fans will surely be confident.

The squad are playing with a renewed confidence and belief, instilled by the motivational Warnock.

It all started with a magnificent Severnside derby victory over Bristol City and Warnock revealed the confidence has been flowing ever since.

He added: "I asked them after the Bristol City game, how do you feel tonight in the dressing room?"

"This is what we want to feel. I've come to enjoy myself. I want them to enjoy themselves and you can see they are enjoying themselves."

' ADAM LE FONDRE NOW AT WIGAN ATHLETIC '

He will be ineligible for the Latics' visit to Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday

Wednesday 26th October 2016

His transfer to Cardiff City in 2014 was greeted with widespread excitement.

With Premier League goals under his belt and a proven goalscoring pedigree at Championship level too, it was easy to see why. He was billed as integral to the Bluebirds' ambitions of an immediate top flight return.

But Adam Le Fondre's Cardiff City story is perhaps symptomatic of the whole club over the past two years. It should have worked, but it just didn't.

Now the 29-year-old is trying to rebuild his reputation at Wigan Athletic, though he will be ineligible for the Latics' trip to South Wales this weekend.

So why did he struggle at Cardiff?

After scoring 39 goals in 53 league starts for Reading, 'Alfie' was ready-made to lead the line as the Bluebirds sought an instant return to the Premier League.

Yet within six months, after struggling to settle in South Wales, the frontman was shipped on loan to Bolton Wanderers. He has since come back fleetingly, but both Russell Slade and Paul Trollope deemed Le Fondre surplus to requirements.

Three goals in 25 games represents a poor return for Cardiff, considering Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lumped £2.3million on Le Fondre's coveted signature.

It started to unravel for Alfie when rumours circulated that the Stockport-born striker was suffering from homesickness in Cardiff and he even fell behind the likes of Federico Macheda and Alex Revell in the Bluebirds pecking order.

As Slade trimmed down his squad and the Cardiff wage budget, Le Fondre was allowed to leave despite Bluebirds fans remaining eager to gllimpse the hotshot who had shone so brightly for Reading and Rotherham. There was also the dispute between Le Fondre and Slade after the player admitted he was surprised by his Cardiff exit.

Le Fondre departed South Wales again in the summer, with Trollope reiterating the frontman was not part of his plans.

And why is he still struggling?

Since his departure from the Madejski in 2014, Le Fondre has been unable to replicate his Royals' form for any club.

Loan spells at Bolton, Wolves and now Wigan have followed, in which time Le Fondre has bagged 12 league strikes in 49 appearances.

It is a curious drop in form for a player likened to Cardiff City's Rickie Lambert for his goalscoring prowess throughout various leagues. And one wonders whether Le Fondre can ever repeat the form that brought 12 Premier League goals during the 2012/13 season.

He is still on the books at Cardiff City Stadium of course, but given his deteriorating form and inability to knuckle down in the Welsh capital, it is difficult to imagine a permanent return.

Could he revive his form at Wigan?

Le Fondre finds himself battling for a first team place at the Latics with Northern Ireland international Will Grigg. And it's a fight the man famed for the viral chant is winning, with five goals from 14 games this season for Grigg as Le Fondre settles for a place on the bench.

With Wigan languishing in the Championship relegation zone, Le Fondre's goals could be vital and it will be fascinating to see if Wigan's new boss -- whoever that may be -- puts Le Fondre at the forefront of their thinking.

While Le Fondre will not be able to haunt Cardiff when the Latics visit CCS on Saturday, he could yet feature in the Bluebirds future should he rediscover those shooting boots.

Cardiff City Vs Wigan Athletic: Match Preview

Date and Time: Saturday 29th October (15.00)

Venue: Cardiff City Stadium

Referee: Oliver Langford

Cardiff City look to continue their good reign of form against a manager-less Wigan Athletic at the Cardiff City Stadium.

By Jamie Kemble

The Neil Warnock-lead revival has seen Cardiff City take seven points from a possible nine and they could continue that form this weekend when Wigan Athletic visit South Wales.

The rich form has seen Cardiff climb out of the relegation zone with a victory over Bristol City, a draw against Sheffield Wednesday and most recently a 2-1 victory away to Nottingham Forest. Aron Gunnarsson and Joe Ralls scored the crucial goals last time out to secure all three points in an eventful tie at the City Ground.

Wigan Athletic have struggled on their return to the Championship and currently sit just one from bottom, four points behind Cardiff. Wigan boss Gary Caldwell was sacked during the week following a poor run of form.

The Latics took League One by storm last year but they’ve struggled to replicate that kind of form so far this season. Wigan have just one win in their last five but three draws in that time means they’ve only lost one also.

Last time out, Wigan were defeated at home to Brighton and they were rather unlucky to come away without a point, following another resolute defensive display.

Wigan have been very strong at the back but they’re struggling in front of goal and Neil Warnock will look to take advantage of that on Saturday.

Cardiff got the better of Wigan in both of their last two meetings with two 1-0 wins during the 2014/15 season. Before that double, Cardiff hadn’t beaten the Latics since 1997 with the Lancashire club winning six during that time.

Team News

Rickie Lambert is set to miss out after picking up a ‘horrific’ injury to his lower leg last time out, although Cardiff are hoping it’s not long-term. Junior Hoilett also limped off last time out but should recover in-time to face Wigan on Saturday.

Ian Holloways Sky pundit prediction

Cardiff v Wigan (Saturday, 3pm)

Neil Warnock is doing his magic again and I can only see that continuing. Wigan need to sort out who they want as their manager and get going again. They play some wonderful football and won the division last year but now they are struggling a little bit and need some more goals really.

I'm going to give first goalscorer to resurgence of Peter Whittingham and his left foot. It's like a wand, they should call him Harry Potter!

OLLIE PREDICTS: 2-1 with Peter Whittingham to score first (Sky Bet odds 66/1)

WIGAN EXIT SADDENS CALDWELL

28/10/16

Gary Caldwell has released a statement expressing his "great sadness" that he was not given the time to finish the job he started at Wigan.

Caldwell was sacked by the Sky Bet Championship strugglers after just 18 months in charge at the DW Stadium.

The 34-year-old former defender led the Latics to the League One title last season in his first managerial position but a poor start this term – which yielded just two wins in 14 matches – cost him his job.

"I am obviously incredibly disappointed to be leaving Wigan Athletic after more than seven years at the club," said Caldwell.

"Having led the team to promotion in my first full season in charge as manager I was hopeful of being given the time necessary to turn results around and so it is with great sadness that I will now not be able to finish the job I started.

"I am fully aware that the results recently haven't been good enough but having not lost by more than one goal all season, I truly believed that we were not far away from getting things right and turning the corner.”

Cardiff City will look to make it four games unbeaten under Neil Warnock when they take on Wigan Athletic at home tomorrow afternoon.

The Latics have struggled so far this season and sit four points adrift of the Bluebirds in 23rd.

They this week sacked manager Gary Caldwell, with Ryan Giggs and Manchester United U21 boss Warren Joyce said to be in the running to replace him.

For Cardiff, they look set to go into the game without the services of Rickie Lambert.

What Nathan Blake had to say

"Wigan’s players could be coming to the Welsh capital feeling sorry for themselves, providing the perfect opportunity for Cardiff to carry on climbing under new boss"
