Doesn't look like 1970 to me, terraces look more like concrete than the old dark wooden terrace that you could get to bounce when it was full. Might just be the picture though, I am getting old.

The picture can be dated to no earlier than the 78/79 season, & looking at the advert boards I would say it was probably taken in the very early 80's.

Early-mid 80's IMO.

Love our proper badge on the Grandstand.
I also love those goals. The ball used to nestle really lovely in the back of those.
Not like the 'bounce back out again' modern ones!!

Remember the last game on Old Grange - Stoke Nov 77..2-0

Just checked the details of that match - it kicked off at 2.45 - may be down to the shorter daylight, cant remember.

That was close to the Winter of our Discontent...The Firefighters were on strike so it was probably for health and safety.
I remember a Bristol City evening game kicking off about 5.30 or 6.30 for the same reason in the Three-Day Week a few years earlier and a need to save power so floodlights weren't switched on or were limited.

Yes, I talked to an old head of theirs once, he said they got in there early, and hoped for the best, fair play to them, hard to shift once a large mob is in your end. I seem to remember Villa as well doing OK with the same tactics.

Villa did indeed get on the Grange end, Birmingham did too, this was around the late sixties/early seventies. They both turned up early but they didn't last long and were soon chased onto the bob bank. The scenes back them had to be seen to be believed, no bouncing up and down waving arms, everyone got straight at it and often there was not enough plod to stop it, mental days.
