' LAST NIGHT FOOTBALL FANS CAME TOGETHER '
<>< CARDIFF CITY STADIUM REMEMBERS THE ABERFAN DISASTER
By Steve Perry
Last night football fans from both S Wales and Yorkshire came together in a poignant silence to remember and reflect on the tragic events of fifty years ago at a school in Aberfan.
The silence was impeccably observed and thoughts turned to 144 lives cruelly cut short from coal slurry that tumbled down a hillside and engulfed Pantglas Junior School.
This should never have happened but balance sheets took precedence over safety and the the heartache of that October 21st 1966 day is still as raw and tearful as it was then. RIP dear ones.

Great respect from the Wednesday fans who initially started applauding but quickly stopped and observed the silence impeccably with the City fans. Thank you Wednesday fans

Sheffield Wednesday fans are a credit to the game. It's unusual to have a minute's silence these days, hence the brief clapping at the start, but once they realised, you could hear a pin drop. Good numbers for a midweek game, and gave their side good backing, too.
