' CARDIFF CITY ON PAPER '

On paper & CardiffCity being at home we expect to beat Leeds this Saturday.
However if we don't start well our fans MAY turn on the team and manager which in turn may make the home advantage a disadvantage.
So the Leeds game is a massive 'must win' game.
In 2002 we beat them when they were top of the Prem League and immediately thereafter neither their club nor their manager recovered. Their arrogant manager disappeared from the face of the earth and Leeds eventually dropped to the 1st division and are now struggling in the Championship.

So what if we lose this Saturday?

Could it be the REVENGE of Leeds on us and their 'pay back' 14 years later?
Did they not have that last season or do they still think about it?
Could a loss for us be the final button pressed to commence our final decline?

But I believe we should win - I honestly believe we are to good for them.
But what if we lose?
Could it be providence?

What do you think?

I don't rate new strikers Frederic Gounongbe and Kenneth Zohore.
And I beileve Wilson should be dropped ASAP, not good enough.

Are we really better than Leeds on paper Annis!?

I agree with you about sat though, if we start loosing the atmosphere may change for the worst and that's never good news for a struggling team.

Jack,I still think we have quite a good squad, yes every few months its getting small(no problem),but yes its getting weaker in quality, yes I have a problem, but over all it still should be good enough for top 10 this season and I don't really rate Leeds at the moment?

Leeds United will NEVER get 'pay back' for 2002 :)

They were, as you say, top of the Premier League and (in their words) "walking it!"

City fans were vocal, as were the Leeds fans with their air of arrogance at the 'walk in the park' ahead of them

Arrogant, disgusting and homophobic are three good words to use when describing the fans from that particular part of Yorkshire and they were on form; particularly when they went 1-0 up to an excellent Mark Viduka goal. Their fans were in clover!

Then it all happened. Cardiff City players refused to lie down, City fans kept the noise levels up through the roof of the old lady which was Ninian Park and they battled back against the odds and it was as if fate was lending a hand...

After Viduka's goal gave Leeds the lead on 12 minutes, it seemed like it was going to be an avalanche but Cardiff had other ideas and battled back only 9 minutes later with a wonder strike from City legend Graham Kavanagh

At that time, Leeds United were the golden club of English football: top of the Premiership and eyeing an FA Cup triumph at the Millennium Stadium. “We will start and end our FA Cup run in Cardiff”, Leeds manager David O’Leary confidently announced.

He certainly got that right; just not in the way he had perceived! ;) :laughing6: :laughing6:

Alan Smith then committed football suicide with his elbowing of Andy Legg and the City fans waved and cheered as he left the field. O'Leary was furious and that was when the game/day started to get even more interesting...

With around 5 minutes left, Sam decided to do another 'walkabout' with Neil McNamara in tow. The Leeds fans went absolutely ballistic and abused him whilst throwing bottles and coins in his direction. City fans responded in voice and from that moment the atmosphere went off the scale

It's hard to imagine (if you weren't there) the how electric it was and the best was still to come...because City stalwart Scott Young popped up and headed in what turned out to be the winner with just 3 minutes to go!

Surreal! The City faithful were in raptures, whilst the Leeds fans stood in stunned silence!

The game ended and a fair number of jubilant Cardiff fans run onto the pitch and stood in front of the Leeds fans singing and taunting in jubilation. Why not? It was mainly innocent and (as Andy Gray said in his commentary) there was no real intent on 'getting at' the Leeds fans. It was just such a fantastic result against the then No.1 team in the English League and the introduction of police riot officers and dogs just inflamed the situation

Sadly, the Leeds scummy side took over and they tried to deflect anything and everything from the result itself. O'Leary was most culpable and when they brought Sam into it as well, it just emphasised how desperate they were to avoid questions on how they had been outfought and outsmarted by that Cardiff City team

Hammam, in traditional style, spotted O’Leary in the car park, so he could not resist goading him. “I told you we were the bigger club!” he shouted. “You were right about one thing: your FA Cup run started and finished in Cardiff!”

A furious O’Leary marched over to Hammam and grabbed him by the lapels, before being pulled away by chairman Peter Riddle.

Leeds United went on a nose dive after that game, slipped out of the Premier League title challenge and were NEVER the same again

The history books confirm the result on that day and no matter what the score on Saturday, the once 'mighty' Leeds United can NEVER inflict such a revengeful result on Cardiff City FC  :ayatollah:

How come?? :?

My point was that we are nowhere near the altitude that Leeds were back then, so a defeat to them would not be as big a deal, would it?

The worst scenario is that we help Garry Monk to keep his job! :laughing6:

Annis

Can I borrow your paper as it seems to be a much more positive read than mine?

Fingers crossed it's right as three points is a huge must for us.

On paper we have a squad which is predominantly made up of average championship players at best under the leadership of a fairly inexperienced (at this level anyway) manager.

I don't expect us to beat anybody anymore, I believe we are in a dog fight for survival this year.

For me, the only way to change is to go and get a manager that is proven and going to inspire the likes of Noone et al to rediscover themselves, maybe then we could finish in the top 10 and kick on from there.

It's a corny old saying, but we might be 'better on paper, but we play on grass'. In other words, football does not always go to plan. Hope we win in Saturday, obviously, but let's not lose four in a row. I was at Preston on Tuesday, and would settle for a draw just now.
