Paul Trollope has confirmed that the Bluebirds will try and sign a striker before the transfer window shuts on Wednesday, and that a new goalkeeper may also be needed.

Cardiff failed to score for the fourth time this season as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Reading, with Anthony Pilkington and Lex Immers again asked to stand in up front.

Trollope has recognised the need to strengthen in that department, and also paid tribute to a 'fantastic servant' in David Marshall, who is due to complete his move to Hull in the coming days.

"Gounongbe is still adapting to the British game, he's had chances in all the games, he's come on and not quite taken them.

“Lex and Anthony provide different options and Kenneth has a bright future ahead of him, but he needs guidance. So we are looking for one, we're hoping to do the business before Wednesday.

“Freddy's been frustrated, he was a handful at Birmingham but missed a tap in. Today he maybe could have done a bit better with the header, so it's a frustrating time for the lad, the level of everything is a step up and it does need a time of adjustment, but he's got good attributes and a bit of patience is needed.”

On Marshall, Trollope said: “At the moment the situation is, the bid's been accepted, I think he's agreed personal terms and is travelling up tomorrow/Monday morning for a medical.

“He's been a fantastic servant and we wish him well, the Premier League's come calling for the lad, he was Captain and we're obviously going to miss him. People have their price and Hull got to that, so the club were willing to accept it. Time will tell the scope for reinvesting but we wish him well.

“We're going to look at that situation very carefully over the next few days, we felt that selling Simon Moore to Sheffield United was a good move for all parties, so we'll look carefully over the next few days. We'd identified Ben as potential for one of the positions, depending on what happens we'll see where he comes out at.”

Any striker is going to struggle with Trollope's tactics..

We also need an experienced Championship manager, & about six or seven quality players, including a goalkeeper.

It's all good and well getting a striker in, but if he isn't given the service he needs from the midfield and wing-backs it won't matter who we have up front I'm afraid.

To have a good chance of promotion perhaps but we all know that is not a budget that we are going to stretch to.

Survival and perhaps a bit of stabilization and something to build on for next season is all we can expect and thats quite some way short of a promotion challenging budget.

Your absolutely right, & you can sense the sarcasm in my post. However, at what point does cost cutting become a fight for Championship survival? Because believe me, our club is on a massive downward spiral, & any long serving City fan will tell you that we have seen it all before, many times in fact, & the early season signs tell me that we are in for a relegation struggle this season, & with the way things are set up at City, its one that we are going to loose.

We've needed a striker for like 3 years , I can't believe we haven't brought a goal scorer for so long , keep on buying foreign no body's it's absolute crazy !

His hands are completely tied...he hasn't got a big budget to buy a striker..he can't pay big wages and whoever he does sign are not going to get any decent service....which striker is going to sign for us under those conditions???

Thing is having a proper striker who makes the right runs, people have something to aim passes to or for him to run on to, which makes space for our other players. Imme and Pils are pretty static and no one runs pass them, so they ball cant really go forward.

Striker will not get service, team looks flat. I can't wait for Huws to come in, shake up the middle of the park.
