Cardiff City and Iceland star Aron Gunnarsson linked with move to Championship rivals

Tuesday 9th August 2016

BY PHIL SMITH

Two strong contenders for promotion have been linked with a move

Aron Gunnarsson Captain of Iceland celebrates his team's victory at Euro 2016

Aron Gunnarsson has been linked with a £2 million move to Cardiff City's Championship rivals.

Norwich City and Nigel Pearson's Derby County are both interested in signing the Iceland captain, according to reports.

Gunnarsson's stock has never been higher after his exploits at Euro 2016 but he was not a starter on Saturday as Paul Trollope's tenure got underway with a 0-0 draw at Birmingham City.

Peter Whittingham and Joe Ralls started the game in centre-midfield while Stuart O'Keefe was introduced as a substitute late on in the game.

Gunnarsson started his pre-season programme later than his team-mates after his tournament commitments but impressed the backroom staff with his rapid progress and played a part in the final tour game against Vfl Bochum in Germany.

He made 29 appearances for the club across all competitions last season, 11 of them from the bench.

2 million is a good deal, added to Fabio going for 2.5 million. Hopefully we'll use it to get what we need to strengthen key areas.

I can't see Gunner get much football here, better if we can use the money elsewhere.

I'd be furious if we sold him, seems anyone willing to tight for the cause is being shipped off, he's one of the only leaders left at the club.

Got to agree. Would have preferred both to have stayed but the offers are too good to turn down especially as we have replacements in those areas.

Norwich City and Derby County - both stronger Championship teams than Cardiff at this moment in time.

We need to show ambition and keep hold of our best players. Especially if they are going to go to our fellow Championship rivals.

After his performances for Iceland at Euro 2016, Gunnarsson is worth at least 3.5 million in today's market in my opinion. Give him the captaincy and regular first team football at CCFC. :ayatollah:

Gunners should be playing every week in the team
To think about selling him is crazy
If these are the managers decisions then he's just proved how good he is
Why has Fabio not been offered a new deal
I hope a statement is made by the club on why our best players are being sold
I don't want to hear about cutting the wage bill because we can cut that by getting rid of the dead wood we have
I suppose Manga will be next
Why haven't we offered him a new deal
We need answers from the club on whether it's a club or managers decision

Norms, They are only good deals if the money is spent back in to our team, which I believe the majority of it won't be.
Really Gunners should be played every week and a good Captain :bluebird: :bluebird:

Keep up at the back. Weeks ago it was made clear that the club had to cut the wage bill further due to the reduction in parachute payments this season.

PT took the job knowing that any player could be sold providing the offer was good enough. As for the deadwood they are still here so no savings have been made yet and it's not certain they will leave, although hopefully they will.

If we keep selling our first team players and not reinvest it into new players I can't see many more fans renewing or buying a season ticket.

That has already happened unfortunately. We have to cut our cloth no matter how painful that is. Hopefully the wages saved by moving these players on (plus the deadwood if it happens) will give PT some room to recruit in the loan market at the very least.

I think we are beginning to see Trollope at work here, clearly, some players have to go and maybe the time is right for Gunners and Fabio to move on.

I can't see him getting much games so I would move him on and 2 mill would be a decent return.

Norms, I really hope we strengthen, we have a good basic squad with say another 2 players and a good striker,we could challenge :thumbright: :thumbright:

I would sell him as long as we get a striker in with the money , I think we need a 20 goal a season striker

I agree, if the two mentioned players went and we didn't strengthen then it would be a devastating.

Really like Gunnars, but with our present system he won't get a look in. He's behind Whitts, Ralls and O'Keefe and he will want regular first team football. Having said that, will he get it at Derby or Norwich?

I find it hard to defend our striker policy apart from we have only played 1 game so there is plenty of time for Fred and Zohore to come good.

However, at first sight it would seem that is the area where we will again struggle. :(

Re: ' GUNNARSSON £2MILL TWO CHAMP RIVAL WANT HIM '

£2m is good business for someone who will be struggling to make the starting line up this year. I like Gunners but he is limited so would take the money if it meant we could spend some of it on a striker!

Re: ' GUNNARSSON £2MILL TWO CHAMP RIVAL WANT HIM '

Tue Aug 09, 2016 1:25 pm

My concern is even if we had 2 million to spenmd on a striker that is not much these days for a good proven striker at championship level

We've certainly got cover in the middle, but who plays wing back now if John and/or jazz get injured?

And yet the club are amazed that season ticket sales are so poor!

Every day that goes by shows how little those who are running the club know about football and the people who follow the club.

Wez, do you honestly think that's going to happen?

The money will surely go towards the cost cutting and certainly won't be spent on a 20 goal a season striker!

More likely we will see another foreign gamble being taken with the club crossing their fingers that somebody comes up with some goals!

Gunnarsson isn't a first team player though. He barely played last year and is behind ralls, whitts and okeefe in the pecking order this year. His stock is high because of the Euros and we've got plenty of players in that area so for me it's good business.

The one that will hurt us is Fabio, especially when either John or jazz get injured.

Re: ' GUNNARSSON £2MILL TWO CHAMP RIVAL WANT HIM '

Tue Aug 09, 2016 2:36 pm

gunnarsson seemed to put in more effort for iceland than he ever managed for us. i cannot see him replicating his form at the euros in the championship, so i'd take the money and give the cash to trollope to find a replacement.

Re: ' GUNNARSSON £2MILL TWO CHAMP RIVAL WANT HIM '

Tue Aug 09, 2016 4:31 pm

Be over the moon, Trollope knows his football, if I was in charge the first thing I would have done is ship Gunnarsson and Fabio out. All this talk of getting young talent in reminds me of the Durban era, and we all know how that ended.

Fabio and Manga have said they will run their contracts down, so City have probably offered them a new contract but on lower wages
