‘Whittingham will still be a pivotal part of Cardiff’s season’

Peter Whittingham has been with Cardiff City for nine years and he will go down in the history books as one of the club’s most influential and successful players. But why does he always seem to keep his place despite managerial changes?
When Dave Jones signed Whittingham in 2007, the Bluebirds’ faithful were optimistic. Growing up at Aston Villa, the 31 year-old made 56 appearances for then Premier League side Villa, and City managed to secure him for a cut price £250,000. Very few knew what a good investment that would be – 375 appearances and 78 goals later, the midfield meastro is still going strong.
Now Paul Trollope has taken the reigns, Whittingham is looking like he will cement a first team place once again, in Trollope’s new 5-3-2 formation and ‘Whitts’ remains the one midfielder who can pick that perfect pass to one of the wing-backs, quickly changing the focus of the Bluebirds’ play.
However, in a midfield two, Whittingham will need to be physical, and he’s never been that type of player. Slotting Stuart O’Keefe in along side will see the two compliment each other, with O’Keefe doing the dirty work, while Whittingham continues to cause danger in the attacking half of the field.
This could see Whittingham thrive, even at the age of 31. The former Villa player will use the width of the pitch to his advantage, and will enjoy Trollope’s style of “keep-ball” which is what ‘Whitts’ has always been used to. With the front three of Pilkington, Immers and Gounongbe, Whittingham will also be able to provide that killer pass that can stretch defences and cause all sorts of problems.
The game has changed drastically since Whittingham joined the club almost a decade ago but there’s little doubt that the creative midfielder still has a huge role to play in the Bluebirds’ campaign.

A lot of people wanted him gone last season , towards the end he was back to his best
If Trollope plays the Wales tactic whittd will be very useful in the centre of the park
