Cardiff City supporters could be left wondering if anything at all is actually going on at their beloved club. But appearances can be deceptive, work is slowly, but surely underway at the capital club ahead of what could be a thrilling Championship season. Despite the fact new Head Coach, Paul Trollope, is currently away with the Dragons, plans are in place for preseason and even within the transfer market, wheels maybe turning slowly, but they are in motion.

So, if you fancy a little break from obsessing over Chris Coleman and his men, this is the state of play at Cardiff right at this moment.

WHEN ARE THE BLUEBIRDS’ PLAYERS DUE TO REPORT BACK FOR PRESEASON?

The Cardiff squad are already back at the club for fitness tests and medical checks. Official pre-season training starts on Monday, July 4.

WHO WILL BE THERE TO GREET THEM?

The big question mark hangs over top man, Trollope, of course. Currently in France coaching Wales, he will be with Chris Coleman’s men until at least Friday when they face off against Belgium in the Euros quarter-finals. If Wales can get through that, their semi-final would be on Wednesday, July 6 and should they make the final, Trollope would be tied up until Sunday, July 10.

Would Trollope then require a holiday too? Cardiff goal-keeping coach Martyn Margetson is also with Wales. It seems likely when the first players return they could be greeted by highly-rated young coach, James Rowberry, now the assistant coach. But with former Cardiff boss, Lennie Lawrence, reunited with the club and Trollope this week, so his wise head could well be in place to help start preseason.

HOW DO THE CLUB FEEL ABOUT TROLLOPE’S ABSENCE WITH WALES?

The Bluebirds’ hierarchy are delighted Trollope is with Wales and hope the Dragons’ run in France continues as long as possible. Cardiff chairman Mehmet Dalman has been out to watch Chris Coleman’s men in action at the tournament.

The club believe Trollope is picking up invaluable experience with Wales. The club have no problem with him continuing his coaching role with the national side right into next season’s World Cup qualifiers. It is in fact Wales’ boss Coleman who said recently he thought this was impractical and that he expected Trollope to step down from the national set-up after the Euros. No word from Trollope himself on the matter yet.

WHAT ACTION IS PLANNED FOR THE PRESEASON?

Cardiff get their summer friendly schedule started with a trip to Forest Green Rovers on Wednesday July 13 and then travel to Shrewsbury three days later. Then on Saturday, July 23 they travel to the Osnabrück Tournament in Germany to play a couple of games against German sides before a friendly against Vfl Bochum three days later.

Back on British soil, there is a trip for a Cardiff City XI to Exeter on Thursday, July 28 with the preamble ending with their final friendly at Bournemouth on Saturday, July 30. The real action begins when Cardiff travel to Birmingham on Saturday, August 6 for the opening day of the Championship season.

Wayne Hewitson,

Trollope is not currently in France as he was on the same flight as me last night into Cardiff . Unless of course he travelled back today to meet Lennie Lawrence.
