Are any of these Clubs going to give Slade the Managers Job?

Fri May 27, 2016 2:50 pm

The former Cardiff City manager is 1/2 on with one bookmaker to replace Jose Riga at the Valley

Russell Slade's tenure was a source of much debate within the Cardiff City fan base, but in the end there was a sense of respect for his ability to keep the team competitive while the wage bill was slashed.

It has quickly become clear that the wider footballing community shares that perspective.

His Bluebirds' appointment was a real shock, but since his departure he has been linked with a host of famous clubs that would likely never have considered him while boss at the likes of Leyton Orient.

' CHARLTON '

1/2 Russell Slade now favourite

After Chris Wilder decided to join boyhood club Sheffield United, Slade has come in as the hot favourite land the job.

Little wonder.

Slade has experience and a history of success in League One, leading Leyton Orient to the play-off final the season before he left for Wales.

Charlton is also a club struggling with an under performing squad, a deeply divided fan base lurching between anger and apathy. The owner is a source of derision.

Sound familiar? Clearly, the patching up Slade did at Cardiff has attracted the attention of clubs in similar predicaments.

' BLACKBURN ROVERS '

Neil Warnock is the favourite with the bookies for this one.

If he wants it, with his long-standing reputation for navigating the muddy waters of the Championship, you'd suspect it's his.

But if he doesn't, Slade could well be at the front queue. His credentials are certainly as strong as the likes of Billy Davies and Owen Coyle, neither of whom have enjoyed success in British football over the last few years.

In many ways, Blackburn are in a very familiar position to where Cardiff were a year or so ago.

Their bloated squad is stretching the club financially, despite the quality being well short of the teams at the top.

With parachute payments coming to an end, they need someone who can keep results up while key players potentially leave.

' NOTTINGHAM FOREST '

At 25/1, Slade is the rank outsider for this one.

Firmly in his favour will be his reputation for building bridges and a positive relationship with Vincent Tan, a task that had been beyond many in football.

Forest Chairman Fawaz al Hasawi has a reputation for interference, and has struggled to hold on to managers.

With a change of ownership mooted, Slade might be someone to offer stability if one of the big names linked with the post can't be tempted.

' ROTHERHAM '

Warnock has left excellent foundations at Rotherham.

Slade's philosophy and reputation for building defensively robust teams would make it a seamless transition.

That would give the Millers a very good chance of beating the drop next year.

But has Tony Mowbray already got that job sealed?

So would Slade be tempted back into management?

These quotes, from his final press conference as Cardiff City manager, suggested so: "It’s early days so it’s difficult for me to say exactly what the relationship will be.

"I’ve done 750-odd games as a manager now. That’s something I’ll have to come to terms with but it’s been my life. It’s not something I’d throw away easily.

"If this role wasn’t something I felt long-term I’m cut out for, I would look at other options.

I think russell slide would want to get back into management as soon as possible!

I stated elsewhere that I believed he would leave our club in a way with which he could hold his head high and an opportunity to manage which is "too good to miss" would allow that to happen! ;)

I'm not sure what his new role at the CCS is supposed to entail but it will certainly smart with him (RS) that he has been moved 'upstairs' only to see his former aide take his place. I certainly know how I would feel about that but I wouldn't exactly be dancing in the streets and would be looking for a face-saving out despite the 'easy money' currently on offer! :(

Chris, Def, I believe Slade will not be happy with his current no say role at City and he will be itching to get back in to hands on management and I don't blame him :ayatollah:

Charlton would suit him fine.

Both Blackburn and Forest still have ambitions to get into the Premier League and I doubt Slade will be high on their wanted lists.

Could be a good fit for Rotherham whose ambitions would never really stretch beyond bare survival at Championship level.

Decent enough manager at the right level - League 1 being that level.

Slade should take the job he deserves better than a DOF role.

His latest ambition is to get to 1000 games in charge whilst winning absolutely fook all. This would set the latest world record of the most unsuccessful manager ever !! :laughing6: :laughing6: :laughing6:

BLACKBURN Rovers have interviewed Russell Slade about becoming the club’s new manager.

But Rovers owners Venky’s could face competition for Slade should they decide he is the boss they want to succeed Paul Lambert.

Charlton Athletic, who are newly relegated into League One, have also targeted the 55-year-old.

Slade is determined to make a swift return to frontline management after losing his job as Cardiff City boss.

The two-time League One manager of the year led Rovers’ Championship rivals to an eighth-placed finish this season.

But before the campaign was out the Bluebirds confirmed that Slade would be moved to a head of football role.

The former Leyton Orient boss has since been replaced in the Cardiff City Stadium hotseat by his coach Paul Trollope.

Rovers have also interviewed Manchester United Under-21 manager Warren Joyce about the possibility of replacing Lambert.

But it is understood Hibs’ Alan Stubbs, former Leeds United and Rotherham United boss Neil Redfearn, Hartlepool United’s Craig Hignett, Wycombe Wanderers’ Gareth Ainsworth, Rochdale’s Keith Hill, as well as Billy Davies, did not make the interview stage.

Stubbs is now a managerial target for Rotherham and Bolton Wanderers.

Neil Warnock, who is a free agent after leaving Rotherham earlier this month, is a boss who interested Rovers during the shortlisting process.

But it is believed his desire to remain a manager for only one more year could count against him.

The final decision, however, will rest with Rovers’ India-based owners.

Venky’s are now considering the merits of Slade, Joyce and the other candidates the club has interviewed.

It is unclear whether there is still scope for new names to come into the frame. Brian McDermott, a former Championship manager of the year, is now on the market after being sacked by Reading yesterday.

Rovers, meanwhile, have reported that the first week of season ticket sales are up 144 per cent in comparison to last year.

The club said it has sold 250 season tickets in the relocated Family Stand in the Jack Walker Stand lower tier compared to five at this stage 12 months ago.
