ROTHERHAM STEP UP MANAGER SEARCH

Rotherham United will approach two clubs over the weekend for permission to speak to their managers as they intensify their search for Neil Warnock's successor.

The Millers have held four interviews over the last week with out-of-work candidates, but will now attempt to speak to two men who are currently in other jobs.

Coventry's Tony Mowbray and Hibernian's Alan Stubbs are names that have been linked to the Sky Bet Championship club.

Steve McClaren, Stuart Gray, Gary Bowyer and one unidentified candidate are understood to have been interviewed over the past 48 hours, but the Millers now appear to be looking elsewhere.

CARVALHAL REVEALS NEW DEAL

Sheffield Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal has revealed he has signed a three-year deal with the club ahead of their Sky Bet Championship play-off final against Hull on Saturday, live on Sky Sports.

The former Besiktas boss agreed the deal in principle more than two months ago but felt that it was the right time for the details of his new contract were revealed before the club's first appearance at Wembley in 23 years.

"We are near the final and I understand it is a good moment to talk about this," said Carvalhal. "I signed for another three years here. I didn't want to sign for that long - I wanted one year - but the chairman wanted three.

“I don't need four years contract. I don't need money - I'm good with my life. If this happens [staying], I'm happy. Being happy is the people around you enjoying what you are doing. If they are, I can stay here 10 years."

CARRAGHER: MOURINHO WILL MAKE UNITED WINNERS AGAIN

Man Utd will soon be Premier League title challengers under Jose Mourinho and their rivals should be worried, says Jamie Carragher.

The Sky Sports football expert told SSN HQ: "He'll have the same impact he's had with every team. It was a bit different at Chelsea with the way he finished there but that will make him doubly determined to make that right and that bodes well for United.

"Next season, you'd expect them to be challenging for honours. You can't win something every season - even Mourinho doesn't do that. The disappointing thing for United is that since Sir Alex Ferguson left they haven't really competed for top honours but they certainly will do next season.

"If you look of his time at Chelsea, he said it would take them 12 months and that he should be judged in the second season. It will be similar at United. They've got a chance of winning the league in his first season but they would have to bring in the right players in the summer.

"There's no doubt that in 12 months he'll be turning that squad into title challengers and after a year then maybe even title winners. The next season they could still win of course - you can't put that past Jose Mourinho."

RUSSELL SLADE LINKED WITH JOB

THE WHARF LONDON

Friday 27th May 2016

Former Cardiff City boss Russell Slade is the new hot name in the frame to take over at Charlton Athletic .

Slade had two seasons at the helm of the Bluebirds but fans became increasingly disenchanted with his side’s lethargic performances and he was moved to Head of Football earlier this month and replaced by Paul Trollope.

Slade would be familiar with intrusive and erratic ownership. Malaysian businessman Vincent Tan became something of a byword in foreign meddling and needlessly goading fans in Wales. Whether this makes Slade perfect for the Roland Duchatelet regime or weary of it may be pivotal.

Slade will be familiar to Londoners as he managed Leyton Orient between 2010-2014 and has had spells running Leicester and Scarborough and Yeovil Town.

Another name warming up the bookie’s betting slips is Rochdale’s Keith Hill. Charlton have expressed an interest but it is understood that the 47-year-old has set his sights on the vacant Blackburn job.

Aston Villa set to appoint Champions League winning manager

Friday 27th May 2016 at 11:28 am

by: Elliott Wheat-Bowen

As featured on NewsNow: Football NewsFootball News 24/7

It has been reported by the The Telegraph that Aston Villa are on the brink of appointing former Chelsea and Schalke 04 manager, Roberto Di Matteo.

From the report, it has been suggested that the Italian has been in talks with Aston Villa’s chairman Steve Hollis, and it is believed that Aston Villa’s new owner Tony Xia is a keen admirer of Roberto Di Matteo.

Tony Xia believes that the appointment of Di Matteo could boost Aston Villa’s reputation and popularity in the Far East.

The success that Roberto Di Matteo had at Chelsea with an unlikely Champions League victory has given him the edge on the other potential candidates.

However although from a business standpoint, the appointment of Di Matteo makes sense from a footballing perspective less so.

Roberto Di Matteo’s experience in recent years is primarily in the top flight of both England and Germany but not the Championship.

The alternatives to Roberto Di Matteo albeit less glamorous options in David Moyes and Nigel Pearson may well be the better option. Especially Pearson who has the experience and know-how to gain promotion from the Championship.

Although there are no doubts that Roberto Di Matteo is a talented young manager whether or not he will be able to cope with the arduous process of a Championship campaign is yet to be seen.

STAM TO READING?

More manager news now and we understand former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam is the favourite to replace Brian McDermott as the manager of Reading.

McDermott was sacked this morning after just five months back at the Championship club.

In a statement this morning Reading said the club would now undertake a rigorous recruitment process over the next few weeks to identify the right man to lead this club forward and into the 2016-17 season. However, we believe Stam is in London this morning and is holding talks with Reading’s owners.

Stam is now a free agent, having recently coached with Ajax’s youth and reserve sides. He has just received his UEFA Pro Licence and recently spent time at Southampton as part of his studies, working alongside Ronald Koeman and the club’s technical director, Les Reed.

FISCHER IN AT BORO

It's all happening! Another deal is announced as Middlesbrough confirm they've agreed to sign winger Viktor Fischer from Dutch side Ajax.

They agreed personal terms with him earlier this week after he travelled to the North East for talks and a fee of around £4m has been agreed for the 21-year-old Denmark international.

The deal will be processed once the international transfer window opens on June 9. Fischer scored 11 goals in 39 appearances this season, including one in the Europa League against Scottish side Celtic.
