Euro 2016: Wales cannot rely just on Gareth Bale says ex-Euro winner Marcel Desailly

BBC SPORT

Wednesday 25th May 2016

Gareth Bale is set to play for Real Madrid in the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid on 28 May

Former World Cup and European Championship winner Marcel Desailly says it is important Wales do not rely too much on Gareth Bale if they are going to be successful at Euro 2016.

Chris Coleman's team are preparing to play in their first major championships since 1958 after Bale scored seven goals during the qualifying campaign.

But the former France defender and captain says everyone must contribute.

"You can't rely on one player on the international level," said Desailly.

"Ronaldo has never won anything with Portugal.

"Collectively they must work very hard on small details to be able to be the surprise team of the tournament."

Desailly was part of the France team that won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 and he believes Bale is among the world's best players.

"He is a world class player and I think that the best is yet to come," he said.

"The talent is there. And potentially, with Bale, Wales can surprise a lot of teams".

Former Chelsea captain Desailly also had bad experiences of playing in major championships.

Holders France did not win a single game during the 2002 World Cup and were eliminated in the group stage.

Desailly believes preparation for Euro 2016 will be key for Wales: "It's all about how you prepare your players," he said.

"I hope they (the coaching team) have the tools to identify the needs of every single player to be able to prepare them."

Desailly was speaking at the Welsh Football Trust's National Coaching Conference in Newport where he's been studying for his UEFA Pro Licence.

We are the country of choice for ex-pros to get their coaching badges, they make it easy for the star names? :o

Thierry Henry fast track coaching licence sparks probe call after 'biased' complaint
Arsenal legend Thierry Henry obtained UEFA A licence through Welsh FA

Thierry Henry’s rapid qualification for a UEFA A licence through the FA of Wales has caused upset with another candidate who claimed the course was ‘totally biased towards a certain few’.

World Cup-winning Arsenal legend Henry completed his A licence earlier this month in a period others studying for the same elite coaching badge reckon would not have allowed him time to finish all B licence requirements let alone the A grade, which takes 180 hours spread over a year to complete.

Disgruntled Welsh-based Scottish coach Will Foley, who played for Swansea, Cardiff and Newport, is to ask UEFA to investigate how Henry, who also works as a Sky Sports pundit, could receive his A licence so quickly and wants the FAW to return payment to him for his aborted course.

Foley said: ‘There was no way humanly possible Thierry had even completed his UEFA B licence and could have finished all his assessments and tasks on the A licence when everyone else participating on the course has not even had the chance.
'Where does it end with the Welsh FA? Are they not worried that someone somewhere will start asking to see proof that all these top names are completing what is required by UEFA to fully pass the courses.

‘They are quite openly putting certain chosen names through the courses without completing the so-called allotted number of hours which all the candidates have to be seen to be doing. The big names get an easy ride while the others have to do it the hard way.’

Foley wrote in his email to FAW course administrator Amy Hobbs: ‘In my humble opinion the A licence course has become so dependent on making sure big names get “fast-tracked” through that some of the other candidates are feeling isolated and unfairly treated.’

Other stars who have done their coaching badges in Wales under the leadership of FAW technical director Osian Roberts include Jens Lehmann, Marcel Desailly, Patrick Vieira, David Ginola and Roberto Martinez.

An FAW spokesman would not comment.

What's he on about?

Surely everyone should realise that after all the hard work put in by Coleman and the coaching staff over the last few years Wales are no longer just a one man team?

There's Aaron Ramsey as well!
