Football Federation Australia threatens A-League bans for fans over use of flares

Nineteen flares set off inside Etihad Stadium on Saturday night

Four people ejected from stadium face bans, says David Gallop

Wanderers fans let off flares during the round 18 A-League match between Melbourne Victory and Western Sydney Wanderers at Etihad Stadium.

FFA chief executive David Gallop has foreshadowed bans for Western Sydney fans who set off flares, disrupting the Wanderers’ A-League clash with Melbourne Victory at Etihad Stadium.

Victoria Police said 19 flares were set off inside the ground and another six outside at Saturday night’s match, which ended in a dramatic 1-1 draw between the two heavyweight clubs.

Four people were ejected from the ground over discharging flares while two more people were interviewed over their behaviour outside the venue but not charged.

Gallop pointed the finger at some in the visiting Wanderers fan section, which numbered about 1,000.

He made it clear FFA would take strong action over the latest misbehaviour, which comes in the wake of the furore late last year that ultimately led to fan boycotts and emergency meetings between FFA and representatives of clubs’ active fan groups.

A major grievance of the fan groups then was the lack of an appeal process for fans who were banned and FFA promised to review it. But Gallop said Saturday night’s problems showed why FFA needed to take tough action.

“The behaviour of some fans and, in particular, a section of the Western Sydney Wanderers fans at last night’s match was unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” said Gallop.

“FFA is currently compiling all reports from Victorian Police, stadium security and both clubs before deciding what action to take.

“This is a clear reminder of the type of people we do not want in our game and that will be reflected in the final outcomes of our enquiries.

“FFA is currently undertaking a review of the security and banning procedures to ensure a fair process for fans who are identified as misbehaving but will not waver from protecting the safety of spectators.

“Finding that balance during the banning process is central to our review but last night’s events should be a reminder that the actions of a minority can damage the reputation and image of the game.

“That is why we will continue to identify and ban troublemakers.”
