Cardiff City signing Tony Watt hits out at 'false reasons' for Charlton exit as he admits nerves over Bluebirds move

Cardiff City’s new signing Tony Watt claims ‘false reasons’ were given for his exit from Charlton - but has signalled his intent to use a new start in South Wales to score goals.

Watt joined the Bluebirds on a loan deal until January 16 earlier this week after 15 appearances for the Addicks this season.

He started the campaign in fine fashion with three goals in as many games but was left out of the team after reports of a training ground bust-up.

There have also been suggestions Watt's relationship with manager Karel Fraeye has broken down, with the Addicks boss signing Ricardo Vaz Te on a free transfer earlier this month.

The 21-year-old hasn’t found the back of the net since August - a 1-1 draw with Derby - and on Monday Charlton said a move away from the Valley presented him with an opportunity to rediscover his early-season performances.

After his arrival, Watt posted a picture of himself in a Cardiff shirt on his Instagram account with the caption: “Excited for this chapter at Cardiff City FC sad when people make up false reasons for me leaving! Never said thanks to Charlton supporters because at this moment in time it’s a loan and never know what the future holds”.

It is understood that if Watt’s loan deal is a success the Bluebirds will have the option to turn it into a permanent deal with Charlton likely to ask them to stump up £1m for the former Celtic and Standard Liege man.

Speaking after being officially unveiled, Watt said he was both nervous and excited to have the chance to play for a club the size of Cardiff.

He said: “I was in the gym on Wednesday and my agent rang me and said Charlton are willing to send you on loan. I said okay and he told me about Cardiff and I knew the manager was interested for a few weeks so I was delighted obviously when I got it over the line and done.

“It’s a big club. I would be lying if I said I’m not nervous and not excited about it. Obviously I want to hit the ground running and score some goals.”

The biggest moment of Watt’s career thus far came when he scored what turned out to be Celtic’s winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League in 2012.

He scored seven goals in 25 appearances for the Bhoys before moving to Standard Liege for £1.2m in 2014 following a successful loan spell in Belgium with Lierse SK.

In January, Charlton signed Watt and he went on to score seven goals in 24 games before his loan move to Cardiff this week.
