The Opposition

Burnley Football Club are a professional football club based in Burnley, Lancashire, who play in The Championship, the second highest level of English football. Nicknamed The Clarets, due to the dominant colour of their home shirts, they were one of the founder members of the Football League in 1888. The club colours of claret and blue were adopted in 1910 in tribute to the dominant club of English football at the time, Aston Villa. It was thought the colours might lift and inspire Burnley to emulate the aforementioned side, the colours before claret and blue was yellow and black,Their home ground since 1883 has been Turf Moor.

Burnley have been Football League Champions twice, in 1920–21 and 1959–60, and have won the FA Cup once, in 1914. The Clarets also reached the 1961 quarter-finals of the European Cup. They are one of only three teams to have won all top four professional divisions of English football, along with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Preston North End.

The club spent most of their early history in England's top two football divisions, but remained outside the top flight from 1976 to 2009. From 1985 to 1992 they had a seven-year spell in the lowest tier of the Football League. In 1987 they narrowly avoided relegation to the Conference. Between 2000 and 2009 they played in the second tier of English football, until they gained promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 33 years after winning the 2009 Championship play-off final, but were relegated after a single season. The club played in the Premier League again in 2014–15 after being promoted from the Football League Championship at the end of the 2013–14 season as runners-up to Leicester City. However, on 9 May 2015, Burnley were relegated back to the Championship despite a 1–0 win against relegation rivals Hull City.

I desperately hope Pilkington plays as he gives balance to the side. That will enable Ralls to move inside. Whitts will have to be benched with Noone getting a last chance on the wing.Watts will have to play instead of an out of form Mason and this is a case to bring Manga in for Morrison.

Tom Heaton Returns to play against his old club Cardiff City

Tom Heaton: We're Resilient On The Road

Thursday 26th November 2015

Clarets captain Tom Heaton is relishing another tough test in the Sky Bet Championship against his former employers Cardiff City.

Heaton enjoyed two separate spells with the Bluebirds between 2008-2009 and then permanently between 2010 and 2012 before joining Bristol City.

And the England international stopper feels that the Clarets resilience will stand them in good stead as they look to extend their eight-game unbeaten run at the expense of Russell Slade’s men.

He said: “It’s a tough place to go and they’re a good side. In the last few years they’ve had a year in the Premier League and they’ve been strong Championship contenders.

“We’ll go there with a lot of respect for them but as ever looking to impact on the game in the way we want to.

“Away from home it can be tough but we’ve certainly got that resilience in the side and the framework.

“That stands us in good stead at tough places to go. I think the atmosphere will be hostile against a good side who have made a good start but we’re all looking forward to it.

“With how many games there are you’re not going to win every one and we’ll be going to get three points but if we don’t you want to get something.”

That resilience has meant the Clarets haven’t tasted defeat on the road since August and Heaton is looking forward to a return to his a place that still holds fond memories.

He was named the club’s Young Player of the Year in 2011 and later went on to famously deny Steven Gerrard’s penalty when the Welsh side reached the 2012 Carling Cup final.

The 29-year-old added: “I enjoyed my time there. I had a loan spell for a season and then signed permanently a year down the line.

“I’m looking forward to going back down there because it’s a great club and I had some really good times.

“I got on really well with my opposition number David Marshall – he’s a top top quality keeper. A few of the boys are still there who I’ll look forward to seeing but there is a job to do first!”

Striker Tony Watt, who has been signed on loan from Charlton Athletic, could be thrown straight into the starting lineup after Cardiff's poor showing in front of goal last weekend. Further changes are also possible, with Stuart O'Keefe and Matthew Kennedy potential starters in midfield.

Burnley boss Dyche has said that he will leave it until the last minute before deciding whether to include striker Sam Vokes. The Welsh international has been suffering with a groin problem, but he could take his place in the team ahead of Rouwen Hennings and Chris Long

Preview: Cardiff City vs. Burnley

By Darren Plant,

Thursday, November 26, 2015

Cardiff City play host to Burnley on Saturday afternoon looking to find the victory that would move the club to within touching distance of a place in the top six in the Championship table.

Burnley make the trip to South Wales without a defeat in eight games, and three points could potentially move them closer to the top of the standings, with just two points between the Clarets and leaders Hull City.

Cardiff City Suffering just two defeats during a nine-game spell would usually be considered respectable in such an unforgiving league as the Championship, but not from the perspective of Cardiff City supporters. Russell Slade has kept the Bluebirds in the top 10 of the table for much of the season, but in recent weeks, they have slipped three points behind the playoff places and eight behind Saturday's opponents Burnley, who sit in fifth.

Victory this weekend may change the mood at a club who have won just once in five outings, but improvements will be required after they succumbed tamely at Derby County last Saturday, making it half-a-dozen league fixtures without a win on the road. That said, Slade deserves plenty of credit for putting together an excellent record at the Cardiff City Stadium at a time when attendances have been on the decline. Seventeen points have been recorded from just eight games, while only four goals have been conceded, two of which came in the same game against Hull City.

Slade does not appear to be under any immediate pressure but with a number of Championship clubs showing little patience recently when it comes to changing managers, it remains to be seen what Cardiff's stance will be should they under-perform in their next three games. However, maximum points on Saturday will haul Burnley, and potentially other promotion rivals, back towards them, and that could prove key for Slade over the coming weeks.

Newcomer Tony Watt can do some real damage for Cardiff City, insists manager Russell Slade

27 NOV 2015

BY STEVE TUCKER

The Bluebirds boss is currently deciding whether or not to throw the 'exciting' striker straight into the starting 11 for Saturday's game against Burnley

Cardiff City manager Russell Slade has backed his latest recruit, Tony Watt, to do some ‘real damage’ in the Championship.

The 21-year-old arrived in the Welsh capital on loan from Charlton this week and will go straight into the match-day squad for the Bluebirds’ home clash with Burnley on Saturday. Slade is currently weighing up whether to start the frontman or name him amongst his substitutes for the visit of the Clarets.

Watt first came to prominence at Celtic where he famously scored the winner against Barcelona in a Champions League clash.

He had a good spell at Belgian outfit Standard liege before moving to Charlton.

Watt had a blistering end to last season at The Valley and fired in three goals in the Addicks opening three games in the Championship this campaign, but he reportedly fell out with Charlton manager Karel Fraeye who has maintained it was an ‘easy decision’ to let him join the Bluebirds.

Slade though, who has seen his side struggle to find the net too often this term, believes Watt could be rejuvenated at in the Welsh capital and has backed his new man to be a success.

“Tony obviously became known as a youngster for that goal against Barcelona for Celtic, “ said Slade.

“He moved to Standard Liege, where he had a decent record, before getting the move to Charlton with the two clubs having links. What is without doubt is that Tony is a very talented young man.

Tony Watt celebrates scoring the winner in Celtic's Champions League win over Barcelona in 2012Tony Watt celebrates scoring the winner in Celtic's Champions League win over Barcelona in 2012
“He’s got great feet and gets the ball into very dangerous areas. He’s very direct when he picks up the ball and we believe he will really add to the side going forward.

“He’s got an eye for goal of course. He can be a very exciting player to watch. He’s got goals at Charlton and they were not creating so many chances, if we can create more chances we believe Tony could do some real damage for us at Cardiff.”
