Bosnia and Herzegovina Vs Wales: Match Preview
15/10/07 at 5.45pm / by Jamie Kemble

Venue: Stadion Bilino polje-Zenica

Time and Date: Saturday 10th October (19.45 U.K Time/ 20.45 Local Time)

Referee: Alberto Undiano Mallenco (ESP)

On Saturday, Wales face Bosnia and Herzegovina in what could be one of the most memorable evenings in Welsh football history. Wales need just one point to secure their first qualification for a major tournament in fifty-seven years.

Wales sit on the brink of qualification with just one point needed to end over half a century of frustration and disappointment. Chris Coleman and his men were just one goal away from qualification in their last outting but Israel defending well and Wales were left waiting for another month.

Against Israel, the safety net of having two more games removed the pressure from the shoulders of the Welsh players but now, just two games remain to get the job done. Fortunately for the Welsh, the job may be done for them as the slightest of slip-up’s from the Israelites or the Belgians will send Wales to France but Chris Coleman won’t be leaving anything to chance.

Wales have lead Group B for the majority of the qualification campaign and while the main focus of just getting to France remains, winning the group will also remain as a target. The Dragons sit just a point above second placed Belgium and five ahead of third placed Israel going into the final round of matches.

Wales have been boosted by the return of star-man Gareth Bale while Bosnia could be without theirs in Edin Dzeko. Chris Coleman and his men remain calm ahead of the trip, especially with bottom of the group Andorra to face at home in the last fixture. Despite not wanting to jinx their luck, Wales fans are certainly getting ready to celebrate and rightly so given the length of the wait since in the last major qualification.

In their last meeting, Wales and Bosnia drew a blank at the Cardiff City Stadium with the game finishing 0-0. The fixture was a tight encounter with Bosnia having the lions share of possession. The fixture seemed to give Wales a massive amount of confidence to kick on in the group.

Wales remain unbeaten in Group B and in ten games overall, the Welsh also boast the best defensive record in the whole of the qualification campaign. Chris Coleman has guided Wales to an all time highest of eighth in the FIFA world rankings. Bosnia, however, are unbeaten in their last three home games and Zenica remains a hostile place to go so it won’t be an easy task.

Wales face Bosnia and Andorra in their final two while Belgium face Andorra and Israel and Israel face Cyprus and Belgium. To view the group table click HERE.

As for Bosnia and Herzegovina, they have hit relatively good form during the last few games despite having a surprisingly bad start to the campaign. The Bosnian’s have won three of their last four with the only loss coming against group favourite’s Belgium. The ‘Golden Lilies’ now sit fourth in Group B, only two points behind the Play-Off’s spot, currently occupied by Israel.

Bosnia will be no push overs for the Welsh as every point becomes crucial for Mehmed Baždarević and his men. After being one of the group favourite’s when the draw was made, it has become crucial that Bosnia reach the Play-off spot, perhaps for the sake of Mehmed Baždarević and his job, Bosnia have already sacked one boss this campaign in Safet Susic.

If Israel can get a win against Cyprus then only a win against Wales for Bosnia would be enough to keep them in with a chance going into the final fixture. If Israel were to slip-up then it would make Bosnia favourite’s to take the third place going into the last game with Israel facing Belgium and Bosnia facing Cyprus.

Team News

Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia have been struck a blow with their star-man and captain Edin Dzeko looking like a doubt while Muhamed Bešić is serving a two-game ban. Anel Hadžić is just one booking away from receiving a suspension.

Wales

Wales have received a massive boost with Gareth Bale making a return from a reccurring calf injury while David Cotterill has been forced to withdraw due to a hamstring injury, being replaced by Wes Burns. Joe Allen returns from suspension but a yellow card for his midfield partner would trigger a suspension for Joe Ledley. Emyr Huws has earned himself a re-call after a good start to his domestic season while David Edwards has been called up despite suffering an initial injury.

Past meetings
The sides’ only previous meetings prior to Group B hostilities were in friendly matches; a 2-2 draw in Cardiff in 2003 and a 2-0 win for Safet Sušić’s visitors in Llanelli on 15 August 2012, when Vedad Ibišević and Miroslav Stevanović were on target.

If all goes to form, there’s likely to be a few goals around on Saturday. One side or the other has scored three goals in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s last five Group B games (W3 L2) which have ended (most recent last) 0-3, 3-0, 3-1, 1-3, 3-0.

Wales home clash with the Bosnians In Group B last October ended in a frustrating 0-0 draw, with Hal Robson-Kanu and Ashley Williams missing glorious chances to win it. But despite Wales cursing their luck, Bosnia still had 10 efforts on target.
