History and description

GSP Stadium officially opened on the 6th of October 1999 with a friendly match between Apoel and Omonoia (3-3).

GSP Stadium is the only one on Cyprus that fully complies with UEFA requirements, and is therefore also used by most other Cypriot teams for European matches. It is furthermore the home of the Cypriot national team.

In 2002, a number of Israeli clubs used the stadium for their European matches due to the problematic security situation in Israel at that time.

GSP Stadium is part of larger complex that includes other sports facilities. Its most characteristic feature is its wave-shaped roof that covers (part of) the main stand as well as the main stand of the adjacent athletics stadium.

Wales have only conceded two goals in six games. What makes you think, with our defence so settled and playing as well as they are, that we'll concede two in one game? :?

Wales expect more roughhouse tactics from Cyprus as they bid to complete Euro 2016 dream

31st AUGUST 2015

Leicester's Andy King is expected to replace Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen in the starting line-up

Wales are set to go from a Jack to a King in Cyprus – but are bracing themselves for a clubbing out in Nicosia.

Leicester's Andy King is in prime position to replace the suspended Joe Allen for Thursday's clash in Nicosia with the midfielder's fine form for the Foxes making him the obvious choice to step-in for the former Swansea man.

It comes after King was sent-off and served a ban for a late challenge in the 2-1 win over Cyprus 11 months ago as part of a physical clash where Real Madrid star Bale was targeted.

And the 26-year-old reckons Wales – who know two wins will guarantee a place in Euro 2016 – could face further roughhouse tactics against a Cypriot side who need victory to maintain their own qualification hopes.

He said: “I will learn from the red card – fortunately the ban was reduced but it was still frustrating missing out and nerve wracking watching the second-half from the tunnel.

“Looking back it might have been a little over the top from me but when teams want to kick us we are going to kick them back.

Andy King gets a straight red card early in the second half
“It doesn't make what happened all right and I have had to learn from it because to miss two games was disappointing.

“But we have to expect a similar challenge from them, if not more so; they are in their home country so they might think they can get away with a little bit more.

“We're expecting a tough game against a physical team and we have to make sure we're ready for it.”

And there is no danger of the 29-cap star taking the task against Cyprus lightly given what's at stake for Wales, adding: “It's massively exciting, you can see the hype around the hotel and more people taking notice of us as a team.

“We are all buzzing and everyone's been doing the maths but we just have to concentrate on our own games. We want to do it as soon as possible but we have to take each game as it comes especially with Cyprus still having a chance.”

Euro 2016 qualifiers: Cyprus v Wales

Venue: GSP Stadium, Nicosia Kick-off: 19:45 BST, Thursday, 3 September
Coverage: Live on BBC Radio 5 live, BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru

Wales are ready to stand up to any overly aggressive challenges on Gareth Bale from Cyprus in Thursday's 2016 qualifier, says Andy King.
Leicester midfielder King feels Bale was "targeted" by Cyprus in last year's match in Cardiff when Wales won 2-1.
King was sent off in the second half for a late lunge, but insists Wales will not hold back in Nicosia.
"When playing a team that wants to kick us they need to understand we're going to kick them back," he said.
Like this? Read these...

"They might be thinking they can get away with a little bit more than what they did over here [in Wales].
"Hopefully that goes for us as well from my point of view. We'll be expecting a tough game. They are a good side - a strong, physical team. We've got to make sure we're ready for that."
Wales will head to Cyprus knowing a victory in Nicosia and another three points at home to Israel on Sunday will secure qualification from Group B.
But Cyprus are still in contention in fourth place, level on nine points with third-place Israel.
table
Chris Coleman's side were cruising to victory against Cyprus in October after taking an early two-goal lead.

The visitors clawed a goal back before half-time and King's sending-off just after the break shifted the momentum in Cyprus' favour.
Wales feel Bale was the victim of some cynical challenges throughout and King expects similar tactics this time.
"In the first game that's what got our backs up, the way they were targeting him," said King, who is set to start in Joe Allen's absence through injury.

"They thought they could do anything without us doing anything back. My red card was a mistake and something I've learned from but we need to be prepared because that's probably going to happen again.

"We're ready to give them a bit ourselves as well."
