Cardiff City's next summer signing could be funded by Bluebirds supporter.

By Chris Wathan

Cardiff City are set to battle it out with Newport County in a bid to boost their summer spending plans.

The Bluebirds and the Exiles are both in line for a £250,000 injection into their transfer kitty to aid Russell Slade and Terry Butcher’s aims of landing fresh faces before the new campaign.

The South Wales sides are both represented in Friday’s draw by Football League sponsors Sky Bet as part of their Transfer Fund competition. More than 100,000 Sky Bet punters were placed into a draw to find a final ten ahead of Friday’s random selection where the winners will be able to hand over a cheque for £250,000 to their club to be used on transfer spending.

Cardiff fan Mr Mawani and Newport supporter Dan Ward will both be hoping their names are chosen when the draw takes place on Friday at noon, with fans of Derby, Peterborough, Carlisle, Ipswich, Rotherham, Coventry Bolton and Southend also in the running.

Forest fan Shaun Lander won his side the £250,000 sum in the last draw, the City Ground side signing Todd Kane and Gary Gardner on loan as a result.

County fan Ward said: “It would help Newport out so much – as they’re in a bit of trouble at the minute.

“There’s such a big gulf between Premier League and lower league clubs that this could really help them push forward after a good season last year.

“You never know, they might name a stand after me!”

The final draw will be hosted by top Sky Sports News HQ presenters Jim White and Natalie Sawyer.

White said: “It is going to be really exciting to see another fan win £250,000 for their Football League club.

“You can only imagine how the chairman, manager and players of the winning club are going to react when they hear the news!

“And the lucky winning fan collects £5,000. So we are going to have a room full of extremely happy people.”

Chance of making 'huge difference'

Fans entered the £250,000 Transfer Fund competition by linking their Sky Bet account to their favourite Football League club. For every £1 bet they generated one Transfer Fund Token towards the draw.

Sky Bet Head of Sponsorship Edwin Martin said: “The £250,000 Transfer Fund has proven extremely popular with Football League fans up and down the country.

“Every fan who entered had a chance of making a huge difference to their club next season.”

The winning club will also be able to use the £250,000 on players’ wages.

to be honest i would prefer if they did someone like £100,000 only, but one for each of the divisions, that way a team like cewnty wouldnt have to compete with cardiff ect for the cash
