Who is Sam Morsy... the unknown Chesterfield midfielder interesting Cardiff City boss Russell Slade?

He's a man most people won't have heard of... so here's the WalesOnline guide to the player who could be heading to the Welsh capital

First it was Eoin Doyle, now Cardiff City could be set to raid League One side Chesterfield again.

The Bluebirds have stepped up their interest in midfielder Sam Morsy as boss Russell Slade already starts to look ahead to next season after watching his side end the current campaign with victory over Nottingham Forest.

So as the club prepare for the future, who exactly is Morsy?

Here's the WalesOnline guide to the player you've probably never heard of...

Background
Morsy came through the Wolverhampton Wanderers Academy but at 16, wasn't offered a youth contract.

He was given a chance to resurrect his career with Port Vale when offered a trial and swiftly took his chance. Vale Youth coach Mark Grew said of Morsy at the time: “He is going to be a good midfield player, there is no question about that.

“After scoring two against Tranmere, I thought he showed what a good player he.

“Maybe he has too many touches at times and gives the ball away, but he keeps wanting it and he wants to learn.”

On the up
The 2009-10 season saw Morsy included in the Port Vale senior side for the first time. He made his debut in a 4-0 win over Lincoln City, winning the Youth Team Player of the Year award that season and being offered his first professional deal.

Key man
Growing into his role with Port Vale after spending the 2010-11 season as a peripheral figure, the next campaign saw Morsy score after just 14 seconds against Morecambe. But a number of yellow cards followed by a straight red saw the player struggle with his discipline.

Morsy's red card for a two-footed lunge against Rochdale cost Port Vale two points at home, with manager Micky Adams calling him a “coward” and accusing him of deliberately attempting to hurt the Rochdale player.

Morsy apologised and insisted there was no malice in the challenge but left the club at the end of the season despite their promotion, rejecting the offer of a new two-year deal.

On the move...
A transfer to Chesterfield was the next move for Morsy, manager Paul Cook saying: “When we found out he may be available, we moved heaven and earth to get him here.”

It was a season to remember for both the player and his new club as they beat Peterborough United in the final of the Football League trophy, Morsy supplying the assist for a Doyle goal.

He played 39 games as his new side won promotion as champions and was voted Player of the Year.

Style of play
A holding midfielder, Morsy has the ability to go from box to box and link defence to attack quickly.

He's captained the Chesterfield side which is still pushing for promotion to the Championship via the play-offs.

Anyone else interested?
Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds and Wigan were all linked with moves for Morsy in January but he stayed loyal to Chesterfield in a bid for promotion to the Championship.

Could the Bluebirds and a reunion with Doyle change his mind?

And another thing...
Wolverhampton-born Morsy qualifies for Egypt through his Cairo-born father.

Not really, they have all been in and out of the team. The only one he has consistantly played when fit is peltier. Doyle was 4th choice only a few weeks ago. Only playing because he only has 2 strikers fit.
