Israel killed more Palestinian civilians in 2014 than in any other year since the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip began in 1967, a UN report has said.

Israel’s activities in the Gaza Strip, West Bank and East Jerusalem resulted in the deaths of 2,314 Palestinians and 17,125 injuries, compared with 39 deaths and 3,964 injuries in 2013, according to the annual report (pdf) by the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The conflict in Gaza in July and August was largely responsible for the dramatic increase in fatalities. It claimed the lives of 2,220 Gazans, of whom 1,492 were civilians, 605 militants and 123 unverified.

More than 11,000 people were injured and about 500,000 Palestinians were internally displaced at the height of the conflict. About 100,000 remain so.

There was also a sharp rise in fatalities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, where 58 Palestinians were killed and 6,028 injured – the highest number of fatalities in incidents involving Israeli forces since 2007 and the highest number of injuries since 2005.

Most of the incidents took place in the second half of the year, following the abduction and murder of Mohammed Abu Khdeir, which led to daily riots and protests in East Jerusalem.

Khdeir, a 16-year-old Palestinian, was kidnapped and killed in July, following the abduction and murder of three Israeli teenagers the previous month.

The report, entitled Fragmented Lives, documents an increase in the number of Palestinians injured, incarcerated and displaced, compared with the two previous years.

It notes an increase in the Israeli armed forces’ use of live ammunition, which accounted for almost all fatalities and 18% of injuries.
Palestinian attacks against Israeli civilians – mostly settlers – and security forces also rose in 2014, with Israeli fatalities increasing from four to 12. Incidents of settler violence resulting in Palestinian casualties and injuries increased, but the number of incidents leading to Palestinian property and land being damaged decreased.

The number of Palestinians held in administrative detention by Israeli authorities increased by 24% in 2014, but decreased when it came to children. A monthly average of 185 were held last year compared with 197 in 2013, a decrease of 6%. No children under 14 years old were held in military detention in 2014.

Are you saying that sending a suicide bomber in is not cowardly? It's one of the most cowardly things you could do regardless of who has more weapons. Blowing yourself up whilst stood amongst men, women & children makes them no better than that prick who crashed the plane recently.

I can also see that Depressed Blue can see the bigger picture & not just one side of it like some.

correct depressed blue the only reason people care is because it involves a civilised group of people killing another group of people (civilised or not you decide). or alternatively its because its jews, and jews aren't allowed to defend their outpost.

with the rise in recent years of anti semitism in europe (guess which group of people are largely to blame), it is vital for the jewish people as a race that israel is strong. its the only place they can be sure they will not be discriminated against.

There is no basis for the land to be called Arab land. Israel build homes for Jewish settlers and Arab settlers. They are using land that technically nobody owns. The reason no one technically owns it is that there has been no agreement since 1922 that actually stands international law. This is because the Arab world will not acknowledge Israel. Land currently being settled on Israel won in the various wars where they have been invaded by their Arab neighbours.

It's simply not a case of Jews stealing Palestinians land and anyone who says differently is wrong.

Ask Hamas Annis. When peace is shown to last Israel give concession after concession. Israel are fully aware that the ordinary Palestinian isn't bad. Unfortunately they are represented by Hamas and Hezbollah who are very bad.

Roughly 6 million Annis! Essentially, and very simply put, that's what led to the formation of the modern state of Israel. Add several attempts by its neighbours to invade and "reclaim" "Palestine" and you begin to understand (if not condone) the actions and mindset of that nation.
It's a mess and, like most of the extreme problems which persist in the Middle East, was caused by the meddling of "The West" which continues to exert its influence to destabilise the region.
If it wasn't for oil in the region and a strong Jewish influence within Western goverments, much of the strife in the Middle East would have been resolved internally decades ago.

Israel has many Muslim, Arab political parties running in the past few months for government. How many Jewish, Israeli people would be allowed to run for office under a Palestinian state run by Palestinian Authority or Hamas?.

Muslims are allowed to live in complete peace in Israel. Why? Because Israel is not an aggressor.

The land grabs are wrong and they should be stopped from doing. The same way we have pathetically squeezed Russia after doing much worse than the Israelis.

If Hamas put down its weapons, the innocent people of Palestine would prosper.

Until that happens then I'm afriad Israel will continue to defend itself. From having its schools and airports fired upon over a land dispute.

As to Arabs in Israel yes there are many,but only the Jews have the final word in how the Govt is run and that's a fact.

Hamas are always aggressor Annis. They don't fight Palestinian's corner they cause them loads of trouble. You are not talking facts when you state numbers killed each time it kicks off. No one can be sure the real figures. Much like 30000 to 100000 is used to talk about with the Dresden bombings.

The hatred of Jews by Arabs goes back to pre World War 2. The arabs were a supporter of Hitler.

I am sorry to say that I have very little sympathy for people who follow a political group (Hamas) who advocate the annihilation of another peoples (Israelis), The Western world, etc, no matter what religion or none they happen to be.

I can never forget the television scenes of the 9/11attack in New York - with people hurling themselves out of windows to escape the flames, the tragedy unfolding before our very eyes, etc, etc, and the TV station cut to the people in the streets of Palestine jumping for joy and burning American flags.

At a recent rally Hamas had the other option for Palestinian power by their side The Islamic Jihad party! Even Eygpt has blocked trade routes to Hamastine. Why don't their Arab neighbours give them land, Jordan Eygpt , Syria etc? Because they hate them! They are brought up on hatred and as long as I have lived it's been no different on both sides. Palestinians hate the West but are the most aid dependant people in the world and a nearly half comes from USA and UK.

The IDF monitors every rocket fired by the Palestinians and 160 have fallen short of Gazas boundary. In other words fallen on their own people . They then report it as the Israelis! Their are countless videos of Hamas beating and killing their own for leaving their homes after IDF giving prior warnings for rocket attacks.
