Team News :thumbright:

“Scott Malone and Anthony Pilkington are still a little way off, while Joe Mason is making good progress and training.

“Ben Turner and Kagisho Dikgacoi are also some way off, but working hard.”

David Marshall is 50-50.

Russell Slade will stick, in the main, with the players who did a solid job at Rotherham in midweek.

Simon Moore will start with David Marshall resting a minor groin strain, while I can’t see City leaving Kenwyne Jones out of his starting line-up for a second time.

Jones was among the substitutes at Rotherham with Alex Revell starting against his former club. Those roles will surely be reversed for Charlton’s visit.

Peter Whittingham is available again after suspension, but may have to settle for a place among the subs.

Charlton Athletic Football Club is an English football club based in Charlton in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, London. They currently play in the Football League Championship.

The club was founded on 9 June 1905. This was when a number of youth clubs in the south east London area, including East Street Mission and Blundell Mission combined to form Charlton Athletic. The club play at The Valley in Charlton, where they have played since 1919, apart from one year in Catford, during 1923–24, and seven years at Crystal Palace and West Ham United between 1985 and 1992. Charlton share local South London derbies with rivals Millwall and Crystal Palace.[1]

The club's traditional kit consists of red shirts, white shorts and red socks and their most commonly used nickname is The Addicks. Charlton turned professional in 1920 and first entered the Football League in 1921. Since then they have had four separate periods in the top flight of English football: 1936–1957, 1986–1990, 1998–1999 and 2000–2007. Historically, Charlton's most successful period was the 1930s, when the club's highest league finishes were recorded, including runners-up of the First Division in 1937. After World War II, the club reached the FA Cup Final twice, losing in 1946 and winning in 1947.

Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall a doubt for Charlton match following precautionary half time substitution

Wed 4 March 2015

By Terry Phillips

The Bluebirds skipper was taken off at half time during the win against Rotherham, but he has not suffered a recurrence of a groin problem

David Marshall having treatment on his tight groin in Cardiff today.

Bluebirds’ goalkeeper Marshall, who celebrates his 30th birthday on Wednesday, was taken off at half-time during Cardiff City’s 3-1 win at Rotherham.

Manager Russell Slade is clear that the tightness is not a recurrence of his previous groin injury and that the decision to play substitute goalkeeper Simon Moore in the second half was purely a precaution.

City players arrived back in Cardiff during the early hours of Wednesday and Marshall reported to the Vale of Glamorgan Resort training ground for treatment and scans mid morning.

Club medics will check Marshall out thoroughly before making a decision on whether he could be ready for this Saturday’s home match against Charlton Athletic.

Slade admits Marshall is a doubt for the Charlton match, but believes he is likely to be fit for a return at Brentford a week later.

Scottish international Marshall had surgery on a groin problem last month, returning in Cardiff’s goalless draw against Brighton on February 10.

He has made six appearances since his return to action, but is now set to sit out again with Moore preparing to start against Charlton.

Manager Russell Slade has again said that Cardiff are now on the right track following our three one victory over Rotherham in the midweek fixture.

Speaking to the press in his post game press conference after watching Cardiff take Rotherham apart in the first half with goals from Ecuele Manga, Macheda and McAleny, he explained that he was delighted to register his first back to back wins since taking the job on.

'We are improving, but they'll still be ups and downs, but we're going the right way. The disappointing thing is we've had these clean sheets over recent weeks and we're disappointed that we've let a goal in. But that's not a bad thing, is it?'

Slade went on to credit all the goalscorers on the day, especially Macheda as hit the net on his return from injury but he did say we probably should've added a fourth on the evening.

'It's (Macheda) half a chance, that's all really, but he's hit it and there was no stopping it and it was a great finish. McAleny did really well, put in a real shift, looked a real threat and he's a good finisher. We've seen it in training and he nearly helped himself to a second.'

There was a down side to the game though as we lost goalkeeper David Marshall at half time with a groin problem and is now a doubt for the weekend's game against Charlton.

Slade explained.

'Having had an operation we didn't want to do any more damage to that so we whipped him off and put Simon Moore straight in. Doubt? I would have thought so, yeah. But I'll have to consult the medical department and see how it settles down.'

Going back to the game itself.

'We are very pleased with the result. We got the ball down, created the opportunities, and, most importantly, we took them. If you look at the chances and opportunities that we had, then I thought it was a good away performance. We made the right decisions, and we were ruthless in the final third, particularly in the first half, so it's a good thing moving forward

Cardiff City boss Russell Slade to consider leaving out Peter Whittingham for the first time this season

The midfielder will be available after suspension this weekend and would make his 300th league start for the Bluebirds if he was selected

Russell Slade could be set to deny Peter Whittingham the chance of making his 300th league start for Cardiff City as he considers leaving the midfielder out of his team for the first time this season against Charlton.

Slade is likely to resist the temptation to recall Whitngham to the side as he returns from the one-match suspension that ruled him out of the 3-1 win at Rotherham in midweek.

Until that enforced absence, Whititngham had played every minute of the Bluebirds’ league campaign despite a series of indifferent performances.

Manager Slade says he was ‘thrilled’ with replacement Joe Ralls at Rotherham, and the 21-year-old has a good chance of starting alongside Aron Gunnarsson through the middle.

Long-serving Whittingham, who joined City in 2007, would be in line to reach a remarkable milestone, but Slade looks likely to keep faith largely with the team who delivered the club’s best performance of the season at the New York Stadium.

Slade has refused to be drawn on his starting XI for the game against Charlton but the feeling is Whittingham will miss out.

Slade clearly has a lot of faith in the versatile Ralls, who was outstanding at left-back during the 1-0 win at Wigan and shone in midfield at Rotherham.

“Joe has certainly given me food for thought and he certainly gives me an option,” said the Bluebirds boss.

“He has put a marker down. We were thrilled with his performance at the New York Stadium in midweek.

“We are starting to get competition for places and that’s what we want. Joe was given his chance in midfield and took it. That’s what we want from every player when they are in the matchday squad.”

City have lost only once in their last seven fixtures and have earned victories in two of their last three games.

But they have only won at home once in 2015, against Fulham in January, and are intent on putting on a big performance for home fans.

“The supporters want to see us having a go and that’s exactly what we want as well,” said Slade. “Charlton are in form and are dangerous opposition, but we are at home and we know how much everybody would love a victory.

On David Marshall

He's probably 50-50 for tomorrow.

He came off the other night with soreness in his groin.

It's more of a strength issue than a recurrence. Let's see how he is.

Simon Moore came in and did great but when you have another goalie who you feel comfortable with, it makes things much easier.
