Team news :thumbright:

Nicky Maynard however is out for another five weeks with his back problem - and with links to Huddersfield, that probably rules out a move this window.

Cardiff City: Russell Slade will make changes. This would be the ideal chance to have a look at Fabio playing wide in midfield and exploiting his attacking talents. Slade has talked about giving him that opportunity and the Brazilian is struggling to gain a starting place at full-back. With Craig Noone at the point of the diamond in midfield, Fabio would relish the chance to run at defenders.

Joe Ralls and Declan John could also start, while Matt Connolly may be given a chance to shine at centre-back alongside captain Ben Turner.

The Bluebirds will give a late fitness test to Scott Malone, who missed their game with Middlesbrough in midweek. Likely to miss out though will be the duo of David Marshall and Anthony Pilkington, while midfielder Kagisho Dikgacoi is a long term absentee.

Defender Bruno Manga is missing for the home side, as he is representing Gabon at the African Cup of Nations. Adam le Fondre is tipped to complete a loan move to Bolton, while fellow forwards Nicky Maynard and Kim Bo-kyung are likely to secure moves away.

Scott Malone is battling for fitness after an ankle injury, while Peter Whittingham and Aron Gunnarsson could be rested.

We are due a win quite soon seems to be one in every three home games.

If Reading bring a massive backing down I could see them wanting it more.
so we could be in for a close game, im going for 1-1 with either side capable of taking it in the last half hour

Cardiff City manager Russell Slade set to switch Fabio to midfield for FA Cup clash with Reading

Wed Jan 21, 2015

Out-of-favour former Manchester United star could have new role in fourth-round tie at Cardiff City Stadium

Fabio, left, has found himself sliding down the pecking order at Cardiff CityFabio, left, has found himself sliding down the pecking order at Cardiff City
Russell Slade is ready to unleash Brazilian ace Fabio in a new midfield role against Reading in the FA Cup this weekend.

Former Manchester United full-back Fabio is struggling to break into Cardiff City’s Championship starting line-up, but Slade believes he could be effective in a more-advanced wide role.

Fabio hasn’t started a match since before Christmas, with Slade believing others make the Bluebirds more solid at the back... even though Cardiff continue to ship goals.

But Fabio is in line to face Reading, with Slade saying: “He likes going forward, taking people on and putting the ball into the penalty area.

CUP CAN PROVIDE CHEER, BUT CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS NEEDED

When having difficulties in the league, the cup can provide both a welcome distraction from any doom and gloom or a chance to build a bit of momentum. Players can use the extra freedom without the pressure for points to eke out a bit of confidence or get used to their role in the side. Cardiff need all of that from their weekend visit of Reading, with a place in the last 16 at stake.

However, let’s not pretend that league points are a must given the run of form. The current stretch of one win in eight – or five points from the last 24 available – equals the previous worst string of results of the Championship campaign before the new boss bounce got Slade a couple of victories early into his reign in October.

For the record, before he left Leckwith after a defeat to Middlesbrough, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had taken charge of seven games in the second tier. His return? Eight points.

Cardiff City boss Russell Slade is given the chance to take some pressure off his shoulders this weekend when his side take on Reading in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Following a promising start to his Bluebirds reign, the former Leyton Orient manager has seen his charges collect just three points from a possible 24 on offer in recent weeks.

That has led to some supporters already calling for Slade's head, with the feel-good factor inside the club following owner Vincent Tan's decision to revert the traditional colours back from red to blue slowly diminishing.

Victory over Reading on Saturday afternoon will go some way to restoring the faith, however, and Cardiff head into the game having already seen off their Championship rivals this season in South Wales thanks to a 2-1 victory back in November.

The Royals have changed manager since then, replacing Nigel Adkins with another man boasting Premier League experience in the shape of Steve Clarke.

Defeat against Fulham last time out halted Reading's three-game unbeaten run, but they will head to the Welsh capital in buoyant mood with a backing of around 2,000 expectant supporters.

Just four points separates these two sides in the league, ensuring that this should be a tightly-contested affair, and Clarke's men will be able to name Chelsea starlet Nathaniel Chalobah among their squad following his arrival on loan from Chelsea earlier today.

Cardiff, meanwhile, are likely to name a blend of youth and experience once more, meaning that Joe Ralls and Tom Adeyemi could link up in the middle like they did in the 3-1 win against Colchester United in the previous round.

Cardiff will be looking to put their league woes behind them when they host fellow Championship side Reading in the FA Cup fourth round.

The Bluebirds went down 2-1 against Middlesbrough in midweek - their seventh defeat on the road - and have shipped five goals in their last two matches.

Defender Scott Malone is a doubt after missing the trip to Teesside with an ankle problem, meaning Matt Connolly and John Brayford could continue as makeshift full-backs.

Boss Russell Slade has also hinted at a new midfield role for Manchester United loanee Fabio, who has not started a game since December 20.

Reading can add two new faces to their squad in the shape of Jure Travner and Nathaniel Chalobah.

Slovenian left-back Travner has signed a short-term deal having been training with the Royals since December, and England Under-21 international Chalobah has arrived on loan from Chelsea until the end of the season.

Midfielder Hope Akpan is back in training after a shoulder problem but is unlikely to be risked just yet while defender Anton Ferdinand is still struggling with a calf problem.

Club captain Jem Karacan played for the reserves in midweek again to build up his match fitness following 16 months out with a knee injury and should be on the bench.
