Cardiff may offer Celtic South Korean international Kim Bo-Kyung in possible swap deal with Adam Matthews

CARDIFF could be set to offer Celtic the man Ronny Deila wanted last summer - South Korean international, Kim Bo-Kyung.

Tuesday 13/01/2015

But the Bluebirds hope to take Adam Matthews back to Wales in return.

Deila admitted a few weeks after he took over as manager at Parkhead Kim was a player he was tracking.

However, at that time, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in charge at Cardiff, and he was not prepared to allow the creative midfielder to go.

Since then, Solskjaer has lost his job and been replaced by Russell Slade, who appears to have decided Kim is not part of his plans.

The 25 year-old has played in just three Capital Cup ties and two league games this season.

Kim first appeared on Celtic's radar when Neil Lennon was still in charge.

But with Borussia Dortmund and Monaco also chasing him, Kim joined Cardiff from Japanese club Cerezo Osaka in July 2012 in a £2.5million transfer.

He signed a three-year deal, helping Malky Mackay's side win promotion to the Premier League in his first season.

Kim could opt to sit tight and become a free agent in the summer.

But after lasting just one year in the Premier League, Cardiff need to revamp their squad after struggling to get involved in the fight for an immediate return to the top flight.

And, they are keen to sound out Celtic to see if they retain any interest in Kim.

As part of their rebuild, the Bluebirds have already been linked with an interest in Anthony Stokes.

Now their attention appears to have switched to their former full-back, Matthews.

The man who turns 23 today started his career at Cardiff, making his debut at just 17.

But he refused to accept a new deal and instead signed a pre-contract agreement with Celtic in February 2011 before making the move north in the summer.

However, Cardiff believe his heart remains in his homeland, and are ready to test their theory with an offer to Celtic.

Deila is not expected to be in favour of the defender moving at this time as first-choice right-back, Mikael Lustig, continues to be plagued by injury problems, despite undergoing surgery on both hips this time last year.

Efe Ambrose has been used as cover in the position, but he is also reported to be a target for clubs down south.

Darnell Fisher has returned from his long-term absence, and played the full 90 minutes of Celtic's opening game in the Maspalomas Cup at the weekend, when they lost 1-0 to PSV Eindhoven.

But with Virgil Van Dijk's future uncertain and Jason Denayer only at the club on loan, it is considered unlikely Deila would want Matthews to go at this stage.

The Hoops boss might, however, choose to explore other options for bringing in Kim, especially if Kris Commons does not agree to sign the contract the club have offered him.

Shaun Maloney is another attacking midfielder Deila admits he admires.

But the 31 year-old - who has already had two spells at Parkhead - is also wanted by Leicester while Chicago Fire are ready to offer him the chance to continue his career in the States.

I've got a feeling this would signal a move for Brayford to SUFC???

No I think most people agree with you, it may depend on if Brayford wants to leave ???

If we replace Brayford with Matthews that will show you the intentions of this club. We are a long way from ever becoming a Premier league club and under the current manager its championship at best if not league 1. All that we have been through over last 6 - 8 years with play offs , FA Cup final we have had our best times.

We should offer Kimbo + some money for Mulgrew

How about we keep Kim and give him a run of games in attacking midfield instead of Noone? Kim is clearly a quality player and still young, Noone is not a number 10.

Plus we don't need another full back anyway

A swop for Stokes better option :bluescarf:

Losing a creative player for a defender....sounds just up Slades street.

Seems a bit stupid to me, we already have a better RB in Brayford and as it stands better back up in Fabio.

The one place we seem to have plenty of good competition in is defence but is the one place Slade is obsessed with, odd.

Get the impression that's where his heart is. Been good this season, though, and a great attitude too. A good pro.

I agree. I was told by a Blades fan last summer that Nigel Clough was keen to sign him,,,,highly rates him & also a fans favourite. I was surprised he started for us this season, & in fairness he has been one of our better players this season.

However, everyone has their price, & I wouldn't be surprised to see him leaving soon, bearing in mind the current economics at our club!

I hear a bid of £100,000 has been tabled for Brayford from SUFC, so can see why Matthews would be a priority. But it does show where Slade's head is at where we would loose a creative midfielder and replace with a defender.

Our midfield is crying out for something different, and why not give Kimbo a run of games as the likes of LeFondre isnt going to do a lot with us lumping balls into him. Granted big Kenwyne seems to be benefiting from the tatics but in all honesty we created little on Saturday apart from set pieces and Gunnersson's long throw ins. We need someone in the middle of the park who can pick a pass but I fear we're a long way from that with Slade in charge.

You only have to look at his interest in Khaleem Hyland, a defensive midfielder. While the likes of Chelsea employ Matic in a similar position they then have creative players in front of him. Who do we have? As much as I love Gunnersson for his graft, he's not blessed with pace, Noone has pace but is often doesn't have an end product, Harris from what little I've seen of him seems to have a bright future he's not someone to build a team around.

I just fear we'll be left with a team of average players, where mid-table mediocrity will be enough.

Connolly is a good cover for Brayford at right back. Can't we get Commons instead?

seems stupid to me. Kimbo if he is to stay needs a cenreal role. We say about the potential attacking midfield we seek - he could be the guy... He isnt a winger and doesnt do very well there. Id see him being quite effective close behind the top 2...

But to swap him for Mattherws - seems backwards

Kim is pants. Another product of the 'omg he's gonna be world class' hype brigade. We'd be lucky to ship him tbh.

i think kyung will take a dump on us and leave on a free transfer in the summer.

i don't think we need adam matthews. brayford is fine plus connelly as back up, with TC on the books for next season.

Re: ' Cardiff to Offer Kimbo swop for Matthews? '

Tue Jan 13, 2015 8:27 pm

Why would brayford want to drop down to league one? doesn't make sense to me.
Weve already got 3 defenders on the bench,we need midfielders.it seems maybe playing alongside jordan mutch made kimbo look better than he is.
Hes really struggled for a long time, its been quite sad to see really

I think hed do well in a 4-5-1 formation, playing in the centre which is clearly his position

Yeah he did well there under Malky for a while.

I'm afraid Kim's form has plummeted. Maybe he wants to go? We need a creative number 10 who can score goals and neither Kim or Mats could do that. Ravel was much closer to that, but I suspect his attitude was awful. We definitely don't need Matthews, much as I rate him ( though Gunter is better).

Problem is neither Kim or Daehli were regulary plated in that role, no doubt Daehli would have done well as a number 10 given the chance.

Emphatically no! Kim is one hell of a player and Brayford is quality.
