Charlton 1 - 1 Cardiff City match report: Bluebirds lucky to escape with a point against 10-man Charlton

Cardiff City threw away the chance to secure a much-needed victory as 10-man Charlton scored a late leveller to deny Russell Slade's men.

In truth, it was no more than the home team deserved as they dominated the second-half despite being reduced to 10 men on 33 minutes when Callum Harriot was sent off for a rash challenge on Craig Noone.

Cardiff had taken the lead on 12 minutes when Adeyemi rose to head home at the far post following Sean Morrison's flick on. It was the midfielder's first goal for the club.

City made four changes to their starting line-up with Sean Morrison, Declan John, Adeyemi and Kenwyne Jones called in.

When Harriot saw red for raising his studs it looked as though the visitors would go on to secure a comfortable victory following consecutive defeats to Bournemouth and Brentford.

But Charlton produced a battling display with 10 men and they had Cardiff hanging on. First they hit post and bar before the outstanding Johann Gudmundsson smashed home a 20 yard shot which flew into the top corner after 88 minutes.

Noone, Cardiff’s best player up to that point in a central role behind the strikers, was guilty of losing possession moments before Gudmondsson struck.

Cardiff lost their way against 10 men and were still hanging on after Charlton equalised.

During injury time substitute Igor Vetokele went clear for Charlton, but with only goalkeeper David Marshall to beat he blazed the chance high and wide.

Cardiff City: D Marshall (capt), J Brayford, B Turner, S Morrison, D John, T Adeyemi (J Ralls 89), A Gunnarsson, P Whittingham, A Le Fondre (K Harris 69), K Jones.

Russell Slade's Cardiff City have not won in the league since 29 November 2014

Friday 26 December 2014

A late equaliser from 10-man Charlton denied Cardiff City a second away league win of the season.
Tom Adeyemi headed the visitors into the lead from Aron Gunnarsson's long throw. And it got worse for Charlton, with Callum Harriott sent off before the break for a tackle on Craig Noone.

But heavy second-half Charlton pressure was rewarded though when Johann Berg Gudmundsson levelled from 25 yards.
Both sides remain level on points just outside the Championship top 10.

Neither went into the match in form, with Charlton having won only one of their last nine and Cardiff without a win in three.

The Welsh side had lost two of those last three matches but, despite having only won once away in the league all season, they started the stronger in London.

Gunnarsson's long throw was causing the hosts problems and it was from one of these that an unmarked Adeyemi rose to head home at the far post.

The hosts were reduced to 10 men when Harriott launched into a late and high challenge on Noone and was shown a straight red card.

Charlton, though, produced a spirited second-half display, with George Tucudean's back-heel hitting a post and Gudmundsson shooting against the woodwork.

Tucudean's flick was then cleared off the line by Sean Morrison before Gudmundsson's stunning strike deservedly levelled with two minutes left.
