Why Cardiff City should try to bring back Fraizer Campbell and Jordon Mutch in January
Dec 19th, 2014

Columnist Scott Johnson says Russell Slade could do worse than turning to two Bluebirds old boys to fire their Championship campaign

Jordon Mutch and Fraizer Campbell

With January fast approaching, speculation regarding potential transfer targets is sure to soon reach a frenzy.

In truth, the last thing Cardiff City need are more players and more expenditure. Shedding about 10 from the books should be the priority, but Russell Slade deserves the chance to make his own signings, if required.

Despite plenty of strength in depth, the squad is short on quality in certain key areas and supporters could also do with a lift.

So why not try to bring back a couple of former players that have struggled to make an impact since leaving the Bluebirds in the summer?

Fraizer Campbell and Jordon Mutch were responsible between them for scoring 40 per cent of Cardiff’s goals last season and it was no surprise to see them get moves to ensure they continued in the top flight.

Campbell had a low release clause which was activated by Tony Pulis at Crystal Palace. He has since departed and Neil Warnock appears to be unconvinced by Campbell.

Despite a promising start, with three goals in eight games, Campbell has not scored since mid-October or started a game since early November.

Warnock has also bemoaned his side’s lack of goals, vowing to bring in strikers during the transfer window. “I think we know we haven’t got enough firepower,” Warnock recently claimed. “I think the players are doing as well as they can. We do need improvement in that area and we are looking to address that in January.”

Having missed a sizeable chunk of his career due to a couple of anterior cruciate ligament injuries, Campbell is unlikely to be content with a lack of first-team football for the foreseeable future.

It is the reason he joined Cardiff in the first place and could result in him being shipped out on loan in the new year if Palace manage to bring in new faces.

Campbell was a big fans’ favourite at Cardiff and seemed to have genuine affection for the club. With Cardiff struggling to find the back of the net on a consistent basis, hopefully they are monitoring this situation closely.

Mutch was a far more expensive acquisition for QPR, costing them £6m for a four-year deal. Young English players with potential international aspirations are at a premium, see also the signing of Cardiff’s Steven Caulker, also 22-years-old, who cost Rangers £2m more.

Those sums could prove shrewd or excessive depending on their progress. While Caulker has become a kingpin at the centre of the defence, Mutch has only made five starts thus far, his sole goal contribution a lone assist in the 2-2 draw with Stoke.

Mutch initially divided opinion at Cardiff and I would be surprised if that is not the case amongst QPR supporters. Consistency was a problem and he seemed to favour the elaborate over the sensible at times.

But he really thrived in the Premier League as a Cardiff player, with seven goals and five assists. The Bluebirds have yet to replace his drive and creativity in the centre of midfield.

If they could bring him back on loan, Mutch would instantly transform the team. I assume he would be far less inclined to return to the Championship, but a speculative enquiry would be worth making, as QPR have plenty of options in that particular position.

Cardiff have not enjoyed much luck with their loan signings in recent seasons, witness what happened with Wilfried Zaha and Ravel Morrison despite their undoubted ability.

With so many players already on their books, it is certainly a market that should appear more preferable and also offers far greater short-term benefits, if they can acquire players with character to match their talent.

Campbell’s arrival two years ago gave Cardiff a Championship boost at the right time, with a scoring run that kept their promotion charge on track.

Mutch also found his groove during this period and each would walk into the current side.

If Slade is looking for a way to win over fans and give his side a lift, he should give Warnock and Harry Redknapp a call. A couple of short-term loans could be of benefit to every party.

Frazier cant hit a barn door and would be another miss-firing striker on the books and Jordan Mutch thought he was better than he actually is and is too injury prone. I am not a advocat of going back for previous players. Both these two jumped ship when we were releagated quick enough. No ta

They jumped ship at the first opportunity. Screw the both of them. It's not like either of them are world beaters who are worth sacrificing our own self respect over. They should have stayed to fix the problem they contributed to.

Wow.  can't believe some of the comments about these two!

Firstly, Frazier's work rate and pace would be a huge asset, and he would definitely score in this league.
Jordan Mutch drives through the centre of the park and makes things happen, he scores goals with both feet, his head, and from distance. He is also partial to a few challenges in the middle of the park.

These two left because they had the opportunity to keep playing in the top flight. We would all have done the same thing. They aren't from Cardiff, or even Welsh, they have no personal connection that would make them love us, but they enjoyed great success here, and they were loved by the fans.

And Cardiff City FC is a mid table championship club, we aren't world beaters - Jesus! We're being linked with players from Exeter, Leyton Orient and Tranmere for Gods sake!!!!

These two returning would be a MASSIVE asset to our team.

It's never going to happen, but if (hypothetically) it did, I would welcome the move

Some ridiculous comments about CAMPBELL here... He's scored goes for fun in this league whenever he's been in it.

MUTCH wouldn't fit into the style of play that Slade seems to prefer, sadly. He is an excellent player, however and is too good to come back down. I can't see QPR loaning back a player they've just bought off a club for 6 million, less than 6 months later either..

I dont think some peple actually go to matches !

Campbell and Mutch are far better than what we have in the team at present.

But for them to move
1. they would want to
and 2. who would pay their wages ?

After watching city games for 35 years I know when I see 2 plain average players, and that sums up these two.

I can out do your 35 years, but it is irrelevant in this discussion !
Some would argue that plain average players got us 2 yeasr ago ?

A plain average and consistent team would walk this league.

Such naive writing by the Echo here, first of all as we have seen by recent releases(Morrison,Ekrim and Cala) Slade is his own man, who says he wants Frazier/Mutch?

We are crying out for a ball carrying/goalscoring midfielder like Mutch, but hes clearly doubled his wage at QPR, playing with some very talented players in the biggest City in Europe, can you really see him returning?

Frazier, by all accounts has not far off tripled his wages at Palace, although he may not get a game he seems to buzz off playing in the EPL, and will 100% not return.

Slade IMO will bring in a few hard working midfielders.
