Season Ticket holders & ex Season Ticket holders can buy a ticket for only £10 & £5 :thumbright: :bluescarf: :bluescarf: :bluescarf:

Expected line-ups

Cardiff City (4-4-2):  D Marshall (capt); M Connolly, S Morrison, B Turner, J Brayford; K Harris, A Gunnarsson, P Whittingham, C Noone; K Jones, A Le Fondre.

Brentford (4-2-3-1):  D Button; M Odubajo, T Craig (capt), H Dean, J Bidwell, T Craig; T Diagouraga, J Douglas; Jota, A Pritchard A Judge; A Gray.

Russell Slade will again stick mainly with the tried and trusted, but looks likely to make one change to his starting line-up. That will be in midfield where Kadeem Harris is favourite to take over from Kim Bo-kyung.

He will consider whether Bruno Manga, now back to fitness, should be called into the heart of the defence after City leaked five goals at Bournemouth. Brentford have won six of their last seven Championship fixtures and manager Mark Warburton looks certain to stick with the starting line-up from a 3-1 home win against Blackburn last weekend.

:bluescarf: ' NEWS UPDATED 19th DEC 2014 ' :bluescarf:

Kadeem Harris is expected to start :thumbright:

Cardiff could hand Kadeem Harris a full debut against his former club Brentford.

The former Wycombe winger was sent on for his Bluebirds bow at half-time of last Saturday's 5-3 defeat at Bournemouth and he could start against the club where he spent an 11-game loan spell last season.

Kim Bo-Kyung looks most likely to step out of the side for Harris and while Anthony Pilkington is closing in on a return following a hamstring injury this match looks to have come too soon for the winger.

One player who will not be involved is Ravel Morrison. The West Ham loanee returned to Upton Park this week on compassionate leave and looks unlikely to feature for Cardiff again before his loan spell comes to an end.

Kim has prob played his last ever City game.

Pilkington is on the mend after his hamstring injury and is back in training, but he won’t be available this weekend.

Harris for Kim could be the only change made by Slade, although Bruno Manga is now available at centre-back. City have an analysed their poor defensive performance during the 5-3 defeat at Bournemouth and Slade will think long and hard before making selection decisions in the back four.

John Brayford is playing on the left when he is a natural right-back, while centre-half Matt Connolly is being utilised wide in the back four and Fabio is out of the team.

Manga hasn’t played for six weeks, suffering an injury at Bolton during early November, but has been training and needs matches before heading off to the Africa Cup of Nations finals in January.

He will be available for City’s first Championship match of 2015, against Fulham at home on Saturday, January 15, but will miss Norway (away), Middlesbrough (away) and Derby (home) during January and probably more. The Bluebirds have earned 17 points from 10 League matches under Slade, and they need a big performance against Brentford.

Cardiff have gained 1pt from their last 6pts available and need a win from this game as they are sliding down the table and the gap is getting bigger with the top 2 teams.

Brentford's previous away game was a 3-1 loss at struggling Huddersfield Town.

' BRENTFORD '

Brentford are likely to be unchanged following the 3-1 win over Blackburn last weekend. The in-form Bees, who have won six of their last seven matches, have no new injury concerns with only long-term absentees Alan McCormack and Scott Hogan unavailable.

Defender McCormack will be out until the new year with an ankle injury and striker Hogan is continuing his recovery from the cruciate injury he suffered in August. Winger Moses Odubajo will continue to deputise for McCormack at right-back while Andre Gray leads the line again after scoring his ninth goal of the season against Rovers.

Possible Lineups

Cardiff City
1 Marshall
16 Connolly
36 Morrison
6 Turner B
2 Brayford
13 Kim BK
17 Gunnarsson
7 Whittingham
11 Noone
9 Jones
10 Le Fondre

Brentford
27 Button
10 Odubajo
6 Dean
5 Craig
3 Bidwell
8 Douglas
23 Jose Ignacio Peleteiro Ramallo
20 Diagouraga
21 Pritchard
18 Judge
19 Gray

The Opposition

Brentford got their surprise promotion bid back on track this weekend, as goals from Jonathan Douglas, Andre Gray and Jota secured a 3-1 win over Blackburn.

The in-form Bees, who came up from League One last season, had won five games on the trot to move into the top six before last weekend’s defeat at Huddersfield. But they responded in style on Satuday to sink a Blackburn side whose recent run of one defeat in 10 matches had raised the prospect of a promotion tilt of their own.

Cardiff 0-0 Rotherham
Watford 0-1 Cardiff
Cardiff 2-1 Reading
Birmingham 0-0 Cardiff
Bolton 3-0 Cardiff

Cardiff City's burning issues: Defensive conundrum, the return of Anthony Pilkington and the real challenge presented by Brentford

DEFENCE? WHAT DEFENCE?
It seems just when you have turned a corner with the Bluebirds under Russell Slade you suddenly find the road ahead closed. Many of us had been waxing lyrical about the new manager’s work on the Bluebirds defence where a bit of tinkering and an enforced change really seemed to have dome the trick with three clean-sheets in four outings prior to the Bournemouth game indicating some much needed solidity had been achieved.

The five goals thundered in by the Cherries though might tell a different story. Defensively at Bournemouth Cardiff were terrible with no-one covering themselves in any glory at all. There are still question marks about the full-backs. John Brayford is on the wrong side and Matt Connolly, a centre-back really, is at right back.

How has all that come about with Cardiff we’re told having the ‘biggest and best squad’ in the Championship. With Bruno Manga now fit, where does that leave the Ben Turner and Seam Morrison partnership? Manga before his injury was probably the Bluebirds best and most consistent player. Does Slade take action? Was Bournemouth a bad day defensively at the office? Questions need to be answered ahead of Brentford that is for sure.
You can picture the scene on Christmas morning.

Little Timmy opening his presents. ‘Now Timmy, we’ve got some good news and some bad news’. ‘What’s the good news Mummy?’ ‘Well, we’ve got you a Cardiff City shirt.’ ‘Oh goody! What’s the bad news?’ ‘It’s the white one.’

Just why were the Bluebirds playing in white at Bournemouth? The answer we were informed was to avoid a kit clash with the Cherries’ black and red.

That is, of course, laughable as pictures later of the likes of Ipswich playing in blue at the Goldsands Stadium soon illustrated. Were Cardiff trying to market the white kit ahead of Christmas? If so, why so coy about it? Business is business after all although I can’t see many replicas being shifted.

Many don’t like the white kit because they think Cardiff will be mistaken for arch-rivals Swansea City in it. Look, it’s easy to tell the difference, Swansea play free-flowing, attractive football and... well, you get the picture. Anyway Cardiff have had white away kits before, but that was before the rebrand by Vincent Tan. A white third kit with Cardiff playing in blue at home? No problem. But now a big problem.
FUTURE OF THE LEFT
Anthony Pilkington is looking to be recovering from his hamstring injury quicker than expected. Good news. Let’s hope the wideman is fit for Brentford because Slade’s attempt to replace him in the last two games have been misjudged.

Kim Bo-Kyung has had his moments for the Bluebirds (not as many as one might like mind), but his outings against Rotherham and Bournemouth were poor, feeble and unacceptable. After the draw with the Millers, Slade should have looked at another option out on the flank. He didn’t and was rewarded with that poor performance.

Kim was effectively writing his own transfer request in an abstract and tired-looking display. Kadeem Harris made his league debut and looked better, but what about Mats Daehli or even Fabio? It’s almost as if Slade doesn’t have the options, well not options he likes, but again that seems sheer madness in ‘the biggest and best squad’ in the Championship.

WHITE OUT

It’s almost as if Slade doesn’t have the options, well not options he likes, but again that seems sheer madness in ‘the biggest and best squad’ in the Championship.

IT’S ONLY BRENTFORD

They say the Championship is no respecter of reputations and the Bluebirds’ beating at Bournemouth perfectly illustrated that. The result put Eddie Howe’s men top of the table with the Bluebirds languishing in mid-table yet last season it was Cardiff who were the Premier League side, it was they who were mixing with the big boys.

Even when relegated it was expected Cardiff were going to be big fish in a small pond with their parachute payments and the biggest and best squad in the Championship.

Things have not panned out that way at all. A year ago on Saturday Brentford were at Preston in League One while Cardiff were at Liverpool in the top flight. None of that will matter this weekend.

All that matters now is that Brentford have won six of their last seven games. They lie fifth. Indeed it is the Londoners could be forgiven for thinking, ‘well, it’s only Cardiff City.’

OFFENSIVELY OFFENSIVE

The Bluebirds play in general is not the most wonderful on the eye, but to watch the Bluebirds on the front foot can be a pretty depressing business right now.

Slade’s men seem unable to prise an opposition defence open actually from open play. OK, a slip let Adam Le Fondre through to square to Kenwyne Jones to tap home, but the other two goals at Bournemouth were high hopeful crosses and headers. That was not dissimilar to the goal at Watford previously.

The Bluebirds must get some kind of cutting edge to their play moving forward, they have to turn defence into attack quicker although the fact they have so little pace in the side makes this a problem.

The Bluebirds attacking is way too pedestrian and way too predictable. Let’s get a bot of zip going and get supporters excited at the same time.

If we play like we have in recent games, 1-3 Brentford unfortunately.

Its hard to get positive when you know we will play 4-4-2, Brentford know we will play 4-4-2 and they know where the weakness are with players being played out of position and a sluggish midfield which does not close down.

I hope that I am wrong and City get back yo winning ways.

After conceding 5 goals in the last game, I have a feeling clean sheets again will be only priority. No Fabio, no Dæhli. 0-0.

I hate brentford, I will never forget that game away when we played just after Xmas we took 7 k fans down there. I took my then 5 yr old son and had phoned them up to try and buy tickets and was told everyone will get in. I was right at front when that stupid f in copper shouted there's no more room. 2000 fans rushed forward and my son nearly came a cropped. It could have been disastrous. So 6 nil Saturday and boo the shit out of them.

I was at that match and luckily saw the queue so got in it rather than go into the nearby pub. They opened an extra part of the stand behind the goal for City fans but it quickly filled and I remember the announcement that 'City fans outside had to disperse' as the away sections were full. felt so sorry for them.

' BRENTFORD STAR MEN '

Jose Peletiaro Ramallo: Another of the “undisclosed”, the Spaniard known as Jota is an integral part of the Brentford system with his speedy runs down the left side of midfield. The 23-year-old began his career at Celta Vigo and has experience of guiding unlikely clubs into the top flight, having spent last season on loan at Eibar, who were promoted into Spain’s La Liga.

David Button: Goalkeeper Button came through the youth ranks at Tottenham, but often found himself out on loan, having five spells away from White Hart Lane before joining Charlton. Moved to Brentford for an “undisclosed” fee in July 2013 and played 45 games in all competitions last term, helping the Bees to promotion.

Alan Judge: Part of manager Warburton’s fluid front five, the 26-year-old leads the assists list with nine this season. The former Blackburn and Notts County midfielder scored the goal that clinched promotion while on loan last season and he made his move permanent in the summer.

Jonathan Douglas: The Republic of Ireland international has become the heartbeat of the Brentford side since his arrival from Swindon, with his box-to-box, all-action play earning plenty of plaudits. The former Blackburn and Leeds midfielder has added goals to his repertoire, with the strike in the 3-1 win over Blackburn being his fifth of the season so far.

Brentford Could Beat Slade To Become Christmas Number Ones!

Pinch yourselves, but if Mark Warburton and his magnificent Bees can defeat Russell Slade’s Cardiff in South Wales this weekend, and three other results go our way, Brentford could be this year’s Championship Number One club.
For the headline of dreams to come true it would take an unique set of scores to align: Bournemouth would need to lose to Blackpool at Bloomfield Road, Derby would need to drop points against Norwich, whilst the clash between high-fliers Middlesbrough and Ipswich would require a stalemate… unlikely perhaps, but a distinct possibility.
Whether or not being top of the pile suits our preferred ‘under the radar’ promotion attempt or not is for us all to debate, but the plain fact that Brentford’s impressive performances this campaign make the achievement even remotely possible is quite simply remarkable.
Blackburn Rovers were the latest club to come away smarting after coming up against the Bees’ brand of football – another impressive scalp in a season to celebrate, no matter whether this amazing form continues into the New Year or not.
And that is not to underestimate the threat of Cardiff in what will be an intimidating atmosphere – The Blue Birds looked shaky against Bournemouth and conceded five goals against a side that likes to play a bit, just like us, but City are strong up top with Kenwyne Jones, Adam Le Fondre and Peter Whittingham all accomplished strikers.
Russell Slade will undoubtedly receive some good humoured banter from the travelling Bees fans, who will be keen to remind the new Cardiff manager of the comments he made following our win at Orient last season – the portly manager claiming that Mark Warburton celebrated like his side had won the FA Cup – let’s hope the scoreline Saturday is similar to that game at Brisbane Road though!
It should be a cracker!

The atmosphere in this is going to be DIA. BOL. I. CAL.

But we are midtable and only 6 odd points off the playoffs. After the first weeks under Ole in the championship, I'd have taken that all day long.

After conceding five in the last game, Managa can now slot back in, and good luck to Harris, let's hope he gets us up off our seats at home :ayatollah:

Players to watch

Cardiff City – Kadeem Harris: He hasn’t played a home first team match and I’m hopeful the lightning-quick winger will start. Having watched him develop over the last three years and come through injury setbacks with a smile on his face it’s his time. He has raw pace, a trick or two and has played a fair bit of League One football. Manager Russell Slade has handed Harris a new contract and sent him on at half-time against Bournemouth. There is a trust between the two men already and it’s time for Harris to start.

Brentford– Andre Gray: The former Luton Town hit-man has scored nine goals for the Bees this season including six in the last seven. He is the lone front man in a Brentford system which sees big support for the striker coming from midfield. Wolverhampton-born Gray, 23, moved to Brentford last summer.

' Harris hopes for first start '

Going to be very windy tomorrow. If we carry on with our div 1 & 2 style of football, making half a dozen unchallenged passes deep in our own half and then hoofing a high ball to no one in particular, we are going to be in trouble. It will be a day for keeping the ball on the ground, but not sure if we know how to do that any more. Think Brentford will just about beat us, going for 0-2.

No Tommy Smith for Brentford :?:

Not sure what to expect tomorrow.

Doubt Brentford will come for a point. They have all to gain and nothing to lose so expect them to fly at City.

Hope City have learnt from their failure last week to deal with a quick and deft advancing opposition midfield, and close down etc.

I'm not holding my breath.

' SCOTT YOUNG LOOKS AHEAD TO BRENTFORD TEST & THE CHALLENGE AHEAD FOR PROMOTION '

Friday 19th December 2014

Brentford visit Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday for the Bluebirds’ final Sky Bet Championship fixture before Christmas and Young, who alongside Danny Gabbidon took caretaker charge of the Bluebirds ahead of manager Russell Slade’s arrival at the Club in October. The former defender talked of his enjoyment of his new role, and targeted a top-eight standing to put the Bluebirds in good stead going into the second half of the campaign.

“I’m learning every day,” he said. “There are different challenges to face as an assistant manager on a day-to-day basis, though I enjoy getting out there on the grass with the players and having my say at half-time and before games. I have a big role to play alongside the Gaffer, and I’m enjoying every minute of it.

“If you’re in and around that top eight around Christmas, you’ve got a chance. It’s very rare that from Christmas onwards teams will fall away. Some teams will go on a run and get in, and one or two will fall out, but the majority will stay in and around that area. That’s our challenge - that was our challenge when Danny and I took over earlier in the season, to finish in the top six, and we’re not far from achieving that now. We need to continue, pick ourselves up after last Saturday, and hopefully get another three points tomorrow.

“It’s our duty as a team to get the fans behind us. The only way we can do that is to be positive on the pitch. We need to get at teams, especially at home, and that’s what we’re aiming to do tomorrow.”
