The last time Leeds United won at Cardiff City was back in 1984 when George McCluskey scored an 87th-minute winner.

It has been 30 years since the Whites last picked up a win in the league from their visit to the Bluebirds.

But would this truly dire record really affect the current bunch of Leeds players when they take on Cardiff at the Cardiff City Stadium in the Championship on Saturday?

No.

This is a young and vibrant Leeds team, and the players are hardly going to read up the results between the West Yorkshire outfit and Cardiff over the last 30 years.

Just because Leeds have not won at Cardiff for three decades does not mean that they cannot win on Saturday.

If Neil Redfearn’s team does fail to pick up three points in the Welsh capital, then it will not be because of any ‘curse’ but because of the players’ failure on the day.

Previous meetings and results look very fascinating when reading a match preview, but the truth of the matter is that they mean essentially nothing.

Leeds United caretaker-manager Neil Redfearn has given an insight into how his team will play against Cardiff City.

The West Yorkshire outfit will take on the Bluebirds at the Cardiff City Stadium in the Championship on Saturday.

It will be the first competitive fixture that Leeds will feature in following the dismissal of Darko Milanic last weekend.

As of now, Redfearn has yet to sign a full-time contract, but all signs suggest that he will do so sooner rather than later (click here to read more).

Leeds have not won at Cardiff for 30 years, and the Englishman is determined to set that record straight.

The 49-year-old has also given a strong hint how Leeds are going to play under him, both against Cardiff and in the future.

Leeds United can head to Wales on knowing that they can get the better of Cardiff City in the Championship.

Cardiff City and Leeds United will head into the Championship clash on Saturday determined to win.

The West Yorkshire outfit have not won at Cardiff in 30 years, but under caretaker-manager Neil Redfearn, the Whites will be keen on picking up all three points at the Cardiff City Stadium in order to get back on track for a top-six finish.

Both Cardiff and Leeds have struggled for the points so far this season. While the Bluebirds are currently 11th in the league table with 19 points from 14 matches, Leeds are three points behind them in 18th.

But which team will have the edge statistically on Saturday?

Goals Goals Conceded Total Shots/Game Shots against/Game Total Tackles/Game Total Pass/Game Accurate Pass/Game Possession Percentage/Game Appearances
Cardiff 18 17 11.57 15.64 20.36 359.07 263.36 43.79 14
Leeds 14 18 9.93 16.86 19.21 431.29 336.36 49 14
As the above stats show, Cardiff clearly have a better shots per game record and have also allowed the opposition fewer chances than Leeds. The Bluebirds have scored more and conceded fewer goals that the West Yorkshire club.

When it comes to accurate passing, it is the visitors who have the edge. Cardiff have a pass accuracy of 73%, while Leeds have a 78% pass accuracy.

Leeds are much better than the Welsh outfit when it comes to ball possession as well, and that could eventually prove to be the key on Saturday.

Who will win the Championship clash between Cardiff City and Leeds United?

This Saturday, at Cardiff City Stadium, newly appointed Neil Redfearn sets out to succeed where so many Leeds managers before him have failed.

Russell Slade is preparing for his fourth match as Cardiff manager, while Redfearn will only be officially appointed Leeds head coach on Friday.

The 49-year-old says he is “very close” to being officially named head coach of Leeds United, while he also confirmed that he and president Massimo Cellino have agreed a new wage package for the Academy manager, removing a major obstacle from negotiations between them.

Redfearn bridged the gap between Dave Hockaday and Darko Milanovic with 10 points from a possible 12 as caretaker manager and is now being handed the job in his own right.

“It’s a massive honour and I’m very proud,” said Redfearn, who is still hoping to end a week of turmoil at the club on a high note in South Wales.

“He (Cellino) said I was the future of the club, I wanted to know if that was still the case and he said, ‘yeah you are still the future of the club’ so that’s obviously got to be reflected in the contract and with certain things.”

While Redfearn works to finalise his contract and ensure his Leeds players are ‘upbeat’ against the Bluebirds, City manager Slade has had a full week’s work with his squad at Cardiff’s Vale of Glamorgan Resort training ground.

Slade could name an unchanged team for the second successive match, but he will think long and hard about whether he can find a place for Ravel Morrison in his 4-4-2 system.

It’s tough to see how that would work with Aron Gunnarsson and Peter Whittingham working to develop their partnership in central midfield, while Anthony Pilkington and Craig Noone are both working well on the wings where they have to combine defensive duties with a willingness to attack wide and produce a service for Federico Macheda and Adam Le Fondre.

Morrison could slot in alongside Macheda in attack but Slade wants to see his team defend hard from the front when they don’t have possession and Le Fondre has given 100 per cent for the cause since he has started in the last three matches.

Centre-half Ben Turner, midfield player Mats Daehli and Javi Guerra all came through a Premier Development League Cup match against Gillingham in midweek with no problems, but it’s likely the three will be among the substitutes at best.

I fear Leeds will come down here to bully us around the pitch with shit tactics.

I'm going for a 3-1 win to us as long as we keep our momentum and don't lose our heads.

Slade

“Ben Turner is moving ever closer. He played in midweek and needed that 90 minutes. We’re pleased with him, he’s a good type, I like him on the training ground. He has a voice and we haven’t got too many of those so I’m delighted he’s on his way back and he’ll be part of the plans going forward.

It’s possibly too early for him to start against Leeds but he’ll be in a 20-man squad for the first time. That shows how close he is.

We are also waiting on Kenwyne Jones, who is 50-50 for the Leeds match. He has done a little bit of work in training this week will have a fitness test to see how he is. That will be a late test.

Cardiff look to get back to winning ways at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday as Russell Slade looks to keep his 100% home record going against Leeds on Saturday.

Ben Turner could feature for the first time this season having returned from his ankle injury that required surgery over the summer after a pre season injury.

Chances are it's unlikely he'll make his return to the starting XI for the Bluebirds though with Sean Morrison and Bruno Manga continuing.

Ravel Morrison might have earned a start after coming on in the defeat to Millwall with other options, such as Nicky Maynard and Mats Daehli available to Slade should he wish to make changes.

Leeds have Souleymane Doukara back after suspension for the first Neil Redfearn's first game in permanent charge after he became their latest managerial appointment. Adryan and Rodolph Austin are battling it out for one place.

Last time we met we won and we're on an unbeaten run against Leeds stretching back 30 years and 15 meetings!

Unfortunately plenty of 'unbeaten runs' have come to an end already this season but Slade's started well at home and will want to continue this streak against a side that have struggle

Tomorrow’s visit to Cardiff City will be a difficult opening game for Neil Redfearn’s reign as permanent Leeds manager, but it sounds like he’s had a productive first week working with the squad in training.

Although Cardiff are currently in 11th place with 19 points, they have improved since Russell Slade took over as boss after a mostly successful spell at Orient, and they’re not stuck in mid-table because of their home form. They have the second best home record in the division with 15 points from seven games, and have been something of a bogey side for Leeds in recent years.

We haven’t beaten them in 15 games stretching back to 1984, but although Redfearn is mindful of that record, he is certainly confident of getting a result tomorrow. He told the official site "We’re due to win one there. We’ve got to make sure we go there with that mentality. We’ve got to go and get at them, make sure they know they’re in the game. To be fair, the lads have been really upbeat. There’s no lack of confidence and there’s a desire to go and get a result.”

And the new head coach said he has been working his squad hard this week to improve their fitness and prepare for tomorrow’s game. "It’s up to me to make sure we’re organised and we’ve got a game plan. We’ve got to get back to the same message about having the ball and being able to play with the ball. We can’t cut corners. We’ve got to do the hard yards. The stronger you are and the more committed you are and the braver you are, the luckier you get. Sometimes that just tips a game and the balance to get a result."

There are no new injury problems, and one decision Redfearn will have to make is whether to recall Souleymane Doukara after the striker served his one match ban last week. Morison worked well with Antenucci against Wolves in the first half, but his lack of full fitness showed in the second, and he is likely to have to start tomorrow’s game on the bench.

Cardiff are also free of new injuries, and will have the option of recalling central defender Ben Turner for the first time this season after he suffered an ankle injuryin a pre-season friendly at Yeovil . This will be a harder fixture than we might have expected a few weeks ago when Cardiff were enduring a run of only win in eight in the league, which saw the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

With the Premier League’s parachute payments to boost their transfer funds during the rest of the season Cardiff will be likely to climb the table during the remainder of the season and could be challenging for the play-offs in May. So a draw will be a good result for Leeds tomorrow, and with the improvement that Redfearn will bring to the squad, I think we’ll get one.
