Dundalk players will now look to resolve their futures after a weekend of celebrations, with the new League of Ireland champions confident they will hold on to all their stars unless they receive offers from across the water.

Ciaran Bond confirmed on Friday night that the club's hierarchy had placed ongoing contract talks to one side for the final weeks of the campaign.

But after Stephen Kenny's side delivered in style by beating Cork in their crunch encounter at Oriel Park, officials at the Border club are now concentrating on tying down their main men.

That will include speaking to the manager about extending his stay - the Dubliner has one year left on his current arrangement.

The Lilywhites are ready to strengthen the squad in at least one department, with experienced Sligo Rovers netminder Gary Rogers believed to be a target. Developments on his future are expected in the coming week.

Dundalk's need to strengthen in other areas will be shaped by the desires of British clubs.

Midfielder Richie Towell is set to try his luck across the water and it's understood he will spend time with Championship side Cardiff in the hope of securing a switch.

Shamrock Rovers have retained an interest in the 23-year-old but Dundalk have spoken with the player and believe he will return to Oriel for another campaign if a contract offer fails to materialise from cross-channel.

Top scorer Pat Hoban has consistently made it clear he has ambitions to go overseas, but stressed in the aftermath of the Cork triumph that he will not be going anywhere else in Ireland.

"There's no doubt about it. If I'm in Ireland, I'm staying with Dundalk FC," asserted the 20-goal attacker. "I'd love another crack across the water, but if it doesn't come, it doesn't come. The only way lads are going anywhere is if it's across the water."

Winger Daryl Horgan and full-back Sean Gannon are two other promising players who have attracted interest from scouts.

Horgan's situation could take longer to resolve as he is under the age of 23 and Dundalk would be due compensation, but they would also have to honour an arrangement with his former club Cork if he does move.

Centre-half Andy Boyle, a reported target for St Patrick's Athletic, has committed to staying in the north-east and, with a €475,000 prize for securing the crown once Champions League money is factored into the equation, Dundalk are ready to offer players two-year contracts and avoid recurring uncertainty.

"I think we've obviously got a bit of work to do over the next week or two," said Bond. "We didn't want to interrupt the final few games by negotiating with players so hopefully over the next week we'll, first and foremost, try to re-sign most of the players we have here and then, secondly, why not add one or two. We have the financial bonus and safeguard now of Champions League next year."

Kenny showered praise on his squad for their professionalism throughout the season as he basked in the glory of a second league win as manager - 11 years after he brought Bohemians to the summit.

"It's unprecedented the levels of commitment the players have given," he said. "I don't know if we've seen it in Ireland.

"Bar Stephen O'Donnell (Friday's hero), that's their first trophy apart from the League Cup a few weeks ago. This is a new era for players in terms of their innate professionalism. They're really driven in terms of every single thing they eat and how they live. It's incredible."

Disappointed Cork boss John Caulfield was magnanimous in defeat, and will now seek to improve the surprise title contenders ahead of a year where they will be expected to challenge. The Leesiders may look to recruit a handful of players from Dublin to strengthen their attacking options - Shamrock Rovers striker Karl Sheppard is on their radar.

"My work over the next few weeks is to see if we can bring in a couple of quality guys in areas that we need," said Caulfield.

"But as I keep saying, these lads have been outstanding. Last December, everyone (outside Cork) was wondering who I was, who this crowd were and how they would do. But I felt there was a lot of potential in the team.

"What they've achieved has been absolutely incredible. But it doesn't take away from the disappointment of losing the league on the last day."

GALWAY manager Thomas Dunne reckons his side are the underdogs heading into the first leg of their promotion/relegation play-off with UCD at Belfield tonight.

The Tribesmen, who are looking to climb into the top flight after just one year in their current guise, qualified to take on the Students by beating Shelbourne over two legs.

UCD survived automatic relegation from the Premier Division by finishing their campaign with back-to-back wins against Derry and Drogheda.

"With them being the Premier Division club, I'd imagine they're favourites," said Dunne. "But big matches call for big players and I believe we have them in Galway."

Dunne's men beat UCD in this season's FAI Cup, but Students manager Aaron Callaghan said: "If we play like we have done in the last two games then we have every chance."

Hope he doesn't get wiped out. If Towell fails, perhaps we can get Juan Sheet.

Cardiff City beat off Premier League rivals to run rule over talented Ireland youngster Richie Towell - Wales Online

One of the hottest talents in Irish football is training with Cardiff City with a view to signing for the Bluebirds.

Richie Towell, who is fresh from winning the Irish Premier League title with Dundalk, has joined up with Russell Slade’s men and the Cardiff boss will run the rule over the 23-year-old midfielder in a friendly match with Chelsea, scheduled for Thursday.

Towell, a former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international, began his career at Celtic and made one appearance for the Hoops before having a loan spell at Hibernian. He joined Dundalk in December 2012 and has had 60 outings for the Lillywhites, scoring 17 goals in the process.

But City have been hit by the news that midfielder Kagisho Dikgacoi is potentially out for nearly four months after aggravating a knee injury.

The South African international did the damage in a recent development squad defeat at Crewe and an initial examination on the knee by a specialist has concluded the 29-year-old could be out for up to 15 weeks. The Bluebirds are now arranging a second opinion on the injury.

It will be a blow for new boss Slade, who suffered his first defeat at the hands of Millwall last Saturday. But the Cardiff manager is more upbeat when it comes to his assessment of potential new recruit Towell.

Who is Richie Towell? Meet the man on trial with Cardiff City

“Richie is an attacking midfielder, a very athletic and fit lad. We’ve had him training and he’s found it pretty intense, to be honest,” said Slade.

“He’s got an eye for goal. I think he was in double figures from midfield for Dundalk as they won the title, so we are really looking forward to working with him.

"Premier League sides and other Championship sides have been monitoring him, but we’ve decided to dive in and he will play for us in a game with Chelsea.”

Towell’s contract with Dundalk is believed to be up at the end of this month and he will become a free agent, so the Bluebirds would be able to sign him should they want, despite the transfer window in England not currently being open.

Meanwhile, Slade has also finalised his back-room staff at the club, with Scott Young confirmed as his assistant manager.

The Bluebirds’ legend had a spell in charge of the first team, along with Danny Gabbidon, following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The appointment seems to rule out the possibility of Slade’s assistant at Orient, former Cardiff favourite Kevin Nugent, joining him in the Welsh capital.

Nugent, who was interim manager at Orient after Slade’s departure, is staying at Brisbane Road as coach to new boss Mauro Milanese.

Former academy staff James Rowberry and Kevin Nicholson have been named as Cardiff first-team coaches, while Martyn Margetson has returned as goalkeeping coach and Gabbidon retains his player-coach role.

FORMER Hibernian and Celtic midfielder Richie Towell is training with English Championship side Cardiff with a view to winning a permanent move, according to reports.

Dublin-born Towell, who started his career at Parkhead, made one substitute appearance for Celtic, joining Hibernian on loan during Colin Calderwood’s tenure.

Primarily a defensive midfielder, he was utilised at right back by Calderwood during his first spell at Easter Road, before a second loan deal was negotiated.

Towell left Celtic in June 2012, joining Dundalk the following December where he was joined by former Hibs and Ross County striker Kurtis Byrne.

Since signing for the Lillywhites, he has scored 17 goals in 60 appearances, helping Dundalk to the 2014 Irish Premier League title.

Cardiff boss Russell Slade is now set to run the rule over Towell in a friendly match with Chelsea scheduled for this Thursday.

According to Slade, the 23-year-old was the subject of interest from a number of English Premier League and Championship sides, but the Bluebirds ‘decided to dive in’ and assess the player.
The former Leyton Orient boss told Wales Online: “Richie is an attacking midfielder, a very athletic and fit lad. We’ve had him training and he’s found it pretty intense, to be honest.

“He’s got an eye for goal. I think he was in double figures from midfield for Dundalk as they won the title, so we are really looking forward to working with him.”

Towell’s Dundalk contract is set to run out at the end of this month, leaving him a free agent and available to sign for clubs despite the transfer window not being open.

Cardiff could make a move if Towell impresses as they look to plug the gap left by the long-term absence of South African international Kagisho Dikgacoi.

He's referred to as primarily a defensive midfielder, at times used as a RB, then slade calls him an attacking midfielder?

Seen him play a few league of Ireland games:

He stands out above what else i've seen in that position.

Very strong, very fit, great engine, no fear of a tackle and skillfull with it.

Obviously not sure if his talent is transferable to the championship but if it is will be a good signing especially as no fee, I believe his contract was up last Friday.

I am a Cardiff fan living Dundalk so i know all about Richie Towell. Whoever called him as a defensive midfielder has no clue, he is absolutely an attacking midfielder. Very creative and has a real eye for goal. His vision is top class and he works very hard. His attitude off the pitch is only thing i can imagine seen him fail in Scotland but he has addressed this since coming to Dundalk. He looks like a player who knows it is time to deliver or his career will go nowhere.

Irish league is poor but Richie is head and shoulders above anyone else in the league. Just a few nights ago in the league decider against Cork City he was excellent up against former Irish international Colin Healy. In my opinion he is the best player i have ever seen playing in the Irish league with the exception of Wes Hoolihan. And i have seen Shane Long and Kevin Doyle playing in the Irish league.

If we sign him we are signing a lot of potential. And also a lad with a lot to prove. I never predict how players will fit in or develop usually but here i am making an exception. If Richie signs then we will all be signing his name within months. He can become anything he wants to become. Hopefully that will be a Cardiff legend.

Sounds promising but I was hoping he was a DCM which we need more than another ACM. I mean we can't find a spot for the considerable talents of Matts and Ravel at the moment so where would this guy fit in? Especially if we keep playing 4-4-2.
