Key facts

Club: Blackpool FC
Opening: 1889
Capacity: 16,007 seats

History and description

Football had been played at the site of Bloomfield Road since 1887, when in 1899 a modest stadium was built. The first match at the new stadium was played on the 21st of October of that year between South Shore FC and the 1st South Lancashire Regimen. South Shore FC would soon after merge with Blackpool FC.

Bloomfield Road got quickly expanded in the following decades resulting in a capacity of over 20,000 by the mid 1920s. In 1930, a new north terrace (Spion Kop) was built to raise the capacity to just over 30,000.

No further developments were made until in 1954 the East Paddock was extended. By the mid 1960s the stadium could hold 38,000 fans, but this was soon reduced when several standing areas were converted into seats. At the same time the Spion Kop received (partial) cover.

By the 1990s, Bloomfield Road had fallen into disrepair and increased safety requirements meant further reductions in capacity.

Several initiatives were launched to build a new stadium, but all failed to materialise. In 2000, the club changed course and presented plans to redevelop the existing ground.

One year later the Spion Kop and West Stand were demolished and replaced by new stands. In 2003 it was the turn of the East and South Stand to get demolished, however no new stands were built yet.

It took until 2010 for a new South Stand to be built. Temporary structures occupied the East End, which were gradually improved, most recently in 2011.

Hm, I was hoping for a comfortable win yesterday, but now I´m starting to worry that the huge potential that I thought was in this team, is in fact not there. I expect another struggle: 0-0.

Preview: Blackpool vs. Cardiff City

By Jack Prescott, London Correspondent
Last Updated: Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at 19:06 UK
Blackpool have the chance to pick up their first win of the season on Friday night when they host Cardiff City in the Championship.

The Seasiders are currently at the bottom of the table after taking just three points from their opening 10 matches of the campaign.

However, Jose Riga's side head into the weekend on the back of a credible 1-1 draw away to promotion-chasing Middlesbrough.

Visitors Cardiff have endured a difficult start to the season, but they are now only five points adrift of the playoff places thanks to an unbeaten run of three games.

The Bluebirds' last outing was in midweek when they drew 1-1 against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.

Blackpool have no fresh injury concerns ahead of the contest, while Cardiff could welcome back Craig Noone to their starting lineup after he was dropped against Brighton.

' BLACKPOOL '

Up at Blackpool there are signs that things are slowly starting to improve.

But manager Jose Riga has warned that he's prepared to make more changes after the midweek draw against Middlesbrough saw striker Nile Ranger take to Twitter to register his disgust at being dropped.

The under-fire boss told the Blackpool Gazette: "I’m the manager and I’m paid to make choices about the squad.

“With the number of games we have to play this week, I wanted to use all of the squad.

“I have looked at the opponents and picked my squad based on the opposition.

“I chose to base my team selection on Tuesday on more technical skills as I knew Middlesbrough would play like that.

"We knew the three games this week would be difficult and it doesn’t get any easier against Cardiff.

“Against Norwich I thought we did really well but Tuesday has given us confidence.

“We just have to stay in the same mindset now and anything can happen.”

Blackpool v Cardiff Preview
Thursday, 2nd Oct 2014 20:54 by Editor
First of all, thank you Cardiff City. Had you not have loaned us Joe Lewis this season then I doubt we'd have got to the 3 points we've reached so far. However, that clause about not allowing him to play against you makes a win at the 11th attempt all the more difficult. Just as Blackpool start to get a performance together which was arguably worthy of three points at Middlesbrough, it's back to square one at Bloomfield Road on Friday night.

Riga must be pulling some of those fine silver/grey locks out. Not only does he have a Chairman ready to give his job to another man, a team that hasn't yet given him a win and a budget you couldn't get a weekly shop at Iceland with, but now the team which he was starting to assemble is falling apart. First, Joe Lewis is unavailable and so in comes Elliot Parrish, then Peter Clarke, who has apparently lost half a stone - and there wasn't much to lose, is only just back in training and Andre Orlandi and Jose Cubero are both doubts after picking up knocks at the Riverside. Whether this game is too soon for Fermose Mendy and Andre Blackman remains to be seen.

Cardiff are still in a state of flux at the moment with caretaker managers Danny Gabbidon and Scott Young in charge whilst Russell Slade waits to take over having left Leyton Orient. The Bluebirds have yet to win away from home with 4 draws and one defeat and so unless this is another draw then one of these sides could break a winless duck. Cardiff will assess defender Matt Connolly (hamstring), but Ravel Morrison could make his first start.

Sky TV and Blackpool haven't been happy bedfellows of late and hopefully we'll finally get some luck in front of the cameras in the same way it did the last time these two teams met. Oh and then there's the small matter of what will happen in the 53rd minute .. maybe more unpredictable than the outcome of the game.

Russell Slade to travel to Blackpool with Cardiff City squad

Russell Slade will travel with the Cardiff City squad for the first time for Friday's Championship game at Blackpool, BBC Wales Sport understands.

Cardiff want to appoint Slade as their new manager as soon as possible.

Slade has been helping Cardiff as a consultant since quitting Leyton Orient boss on 24 September.

His presence with the squad, who are flying to the north west of England on Friday morning, is the strongest indication an appointment is close.
But if Slade is not confirmed on Friday then caretaker managers Scott Young and Danny Gabbidon will again be in charge at bottom side Blackpool.
The pair have been in temporary charge since former Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stepped down on 18 September.
Young and Gabbidon have held talks with owner Vincent Tan and Slade but insisted they had control of team selection ahead of the match at Bloomfield Road.
Cardiff are unbeaten in three league matches under Young and Gabbidon, although they lost 3-0 against Bournemouth in the Capital One Cup.
Former Notts County and Yeovil manager Slade watched Cardiff's 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday last Saturday and was at Tuesday's 1-1 draw at Brighton.
The Bluebirds and Slade's former side, League One Leyton Orient, are in dispute over his proposed appointment at the Welsh club.
Goalkeeper David Marshall said after the game at Brighton he was hopeful Slade would be confirmed as Cardiff's new boss by the end of the week.

Won't be many changes for tonight. We must start controlling games.Recently, sides have monopolised possession. Our midfield needs to have more influence in the game.Doesn't help that Dikgacio remains sidelined with fitness issues, ;) I would drop Witts for this one. He needs a kick up the proverbials.
