Disgraced: Former Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay was alos linked with the Palace post last month

Disgraced former Cardiff and Watford manager Malky Mackay caused consternation when he was spotted in the directors box at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

Fulham supporters took to social network condemning his presence as bookies slashed the odds on him replacing sacked manager Felix Magath from 20-1 to 6-4 favourite.

Fulham CEO Alistair Mackintosh said Mackay wasn’t a candidate for the job but was a friend of Kit Symons and Peter Grant, the club’s caretaker management team. Mackay’s star has fallen since a scandal over racist, sexist and homophobic texts allegedly exchanged by him and former Cardiff sporting director Iain Moody while he was manager at the Welsh club.

Symons had just one training session before Saturday’s home game against Blackburn to try and galvanise a squad short on confidence after taking one point from their first seven Championship games.

Absent Fulham owner Shahid Khan said: “I will personally lead the search for our next manager. To address the question as to whether Kit will be in consideration, the answer is yes. But this will be an exhaustive, thorough and deliberate process.

“I plan to summon a number of qualified advisers for input. In the end the decision will be mine.”

Fulham fans will pray Khan doesn’t take pointers from the qualified advisers who led him to Magath.

Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat masked encouraging signs for Symons after Shaun Hutchinson was sent off in the first half for a reckless challenge. Fulham dominated after Jordan Rhodes scored but found keeper Jason Steele in breathtaking form.

Symons said: “I just had to walk in and it gave the players a lift. Everyone has been so positive. It’s given me a huge boost. I’ve told the world and it’s wife that I want the job but I fully expect and want the owner to pick the right person.

“I think the manager, Alistair Mackintosh and the owner have a conference call (today). I will talk about why I feel I’m the right person.”

Magath has defended his reign and said he still has “something to give”. “I am convinced that German qualities could do English football a lot of good,” he said.

During the promotion season was a common joke around the players as allegedly malky used to try to get a cut of their image rights and even local deals and sponsorships as well as the main alleged allegations of his huge payout on signing players we did not need or want ie cornelious
