Leicester City set to confirm double signing of Manchester United duo but miss out on Jermain Defoe

Leicester City are expected to confirm the loan signing of Manchester United midfielder Nick Powell but have missed out on a bid to sign England striker Jermain Defoe.

Powell should be confirmed as joining City on loan for the rest of the season but it was City’s attempts to prise Defoe away from Toronto FC before the transfer window closed which excited City fans.

Defoe is believed to want a return to the Premier League less than a year after joining the MLS side and both City and Queens Park Rangers were keen to fulfil the 31-year-old’s wish.

QPR chairman Tony Fernandes claimed they had agreed personal terms with Defoe. However, a deal could not be agreed with Toronto who are keen to hold onto their star striker as they have reached the MLS play-offs.

The signing of Powell will further bolster City’s attacking midfield options. The 20-year-old, who has been capped twice by England at under-21 level, enjoyed a loan spell at Wigan Athletic last season, scoring 12 times in 41 appearances.

City also completed the signings of 19-year-old American midfielder Kristian Scott from Swansea City and United striker Tom Lawrence on permanent deals.

Scott will join the development squad while City are believed to have paid £1 million for Lawrence, who has signed a four-year contract.

Manchester United and Wales star Tom Lawrence moves to Leicester City for £1m on a four-year-deal -

Manchester United midfielder and Wales starlet Tom Lawrence has completed a move to Leicester City.

The 20-year-old, who made an impressive bow for the Red Devils at the end of last season under the guidance of then interim manager Ryan Giggs, has signed a four-year-deal at the King Power Stadium for a fee of £1m.

Lawrence has represented Wales at U17, U19 and U21 level and is in Chris Coleman's senior squad to face Andorra next week.

But he's found himself sidelined at Old Trafford under new Reds boss Louis van Gaal and with the Dutchman splashing the cash on new players this summer, opportunities would have been even harder to come by.
