Wolves 1-0 Cardiff City: Bluebirds suffer first Championship loss after late Mark Hudson own goal
Aug 23, 2014

By Alex Bywater

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men left Molineux without a point

A late Mark Hudson own goal meant Cardiff City went down to a 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.

With Kenwyne Jones surprisingly left on the bench, the Bluebirds created few opportunities against last season's League One Champions.

Adam Le Fondre and Jones, who was a half time replacement for Nicky Maynard, had the best chances and although Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side struggled for rhythm, it did look as if they would at least return home with a point.

But all that evaporated with just seconds left on the clock, as centre half and skipper Hudson put through his own net.

It left the Bluebirds to digest their first defeat of the season after an impressive start to the new campaign.

Solskjaer's decision to leave Jones, who has scored three times this season already, on the bench was a strange move. John Brayford was also among the replacements while summer signing Anthony Pilkington made his first start for the club.

A three man central midfield meant Cardiff lacked width at times and in a scoreless first half, both sides struggled to create chances.

Wolves dangerman Bakary Sako hit the post direct from a corner with David Marshall flapping while Le Fondre went close to scoring a superb individual effort.

After a stale first period, Jones was introduced at the break and he nearly won the game for City in the final few minutes.

The former Sunderland man controlled a Peter Whittingham pass with his chest and volleyed towards goal, only to see his effort brilliantly saved by Carl Ikeme.

And when Wolves went up the other end, Hudson's own goal concluded what was been a pretty miserable week for Cardiff City.

Wolves 1 v 0 Cardiff City: The Debrief
The match report

Cardiff City playing football? Thought they were all about off-pitch drama!
Oh you are a funny one. The Bluebirds have enjoyed a great start to the Championship season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. They were unbeaten and it looked it might stay the same here until really bad luck late on when captain Mark Hudson sliced the ball into his own net to hand Wolves the three points.

To be honest, even though they lost, it was nice to get back to the football after the surreal events of the past few days.

Did the Bluebirds deserve a point, then?
Just about on the balance of things. Wolves dominated the first-half at Molineux and had all of the ball, but amazingly the Bluebirds probably had the best chances.

Adam Le Fondre had an amazing 60 yard run, held off a couple of challenges and shot just wide. Then, from a corner just before the interval, Sean Morrison really should have scored when he sneaked in at the back-post and somehow shot wide from just yards out.

I bet Wolves battered them in the second-half?

Not really. If anything Cardiff came more into it and they almost took the lead. Peter Whittingham found Kenwyne Jones in the box, he chested down and Wanderers’ goalkeeper Carl Ikeme did amazingly well to push the shot away.

Then Wolves went up the other end, Scott Golbourne put a cross in and Hudson went to clear it and it sliced off his shin and went in off the post. Really bad luck.

I suppose Solskjaer kept the same side which beat Wigan last time out?
Ahem, are you kidding? This is the tinkerman we are on about after all.

John Brayford was on the bench, Mats Daehli was nowhere to be seen at all and Le Fondre came in for Jones who, despite being in red hot form, was on the bench before coming on at half-time.

The surprise is that we were surprised given Solskjaer's track record. The words consistency and momentum do not appear to be in his vocabulary.

Did it work, though?
Not really to be honest. Cardiff sort of deserved a point just for scrapping it out, but they weren’t great for long periods. Unsurprisingly there was no fluency about them.

They seemed to lack an understanding at times and they struggled to put a meaningful period of pressure on their hosts. Look at it this way, those who believe Solskjaer changes his team too much will have found more ammunition here.

Fair enough. Anyone have a good game or a bad one?

Morrison was probably the pick for Cardiff at centre-half. Not bad again considering it was only his second game. Anthony Pilkington made his first start and had some nice touches, but it lacked an end product.

It all looked a bit narrow at times with Solskjaer starting with a 4-3-3 that never convinced. Tell you what, despite all the recent good reports, Fabio looked dodgy again, particularly in the first-half when Rajiv van La Parra for Wolves ran him ragged.

But I suppose, in the end, we should blame Hudson?
Not really. He did OK for most of the game, you know what you get from him.

And, what are you going to say about a late error like that? It could happen to anyone really. Cardiff were unlucky, they almost had what would have been a good point, but Wolves will argue they deserved all three points.

Kenny Jackett’s men have already defeated all the sides relegated from the Premier League last season. 1-0 against them all. Not bad for a side who have just come up.
