Revealed: The Cardiff City alternative blue shirt YOU voted as your favourite available for order for the 2014/15 season
Monday Jun 16, 2014

By Liz Day

Nearly 8,000 of you voted after we launched our Back to Blue alternative shirts campaign last week. Now we can reveal the winner... :bluescarf: :bluescarf: :bluescarf:

Since we launched our alternative Cardiff City shirts last week , thousands of you voted for your favourite and today, we can reveal the winning design.

We had a two-horse race on our hands throughout and after a total of 7,663 votes were cast, the two most popular designs were separated by just four votes.

First place
But the jersey you will be able to wear with pride next season is shirt three, which won 2,572 votes.

Sian Branson, from St Fagans, said: “For us, this is extremely important because it is not just an issue of re-branding, it is an issue or our traditions, our history and our heritage.

The blue background with a yellow and white verticle stripe was inspired by designs of the 70s, which were worn by the likes of Robin Friday.

In second place, with 2,568 votes, was shirt one – a plain blue design with a prominent bluebird crest.

Lifelong Cardiff City fan Doug Clark, who models the shirt, said: “I didn’t mind which design won, as long as it was blue. We are the Bluebirds and I will never, ever wear red.”

The 79-year-old from Pentrebane started following the club in 1943 at the age of eight.

He added: “When I heard the seats in the stadium might be turning red, I vowed I would take my big, blue beach towel to cover it up. I would never sit in a red seat.”

The shirts have been designed by Cardiff City Supporters Trust, in conjunction with sportswear company Kukri Sports.

Keith Morgan, a board member of the Cardiff City Supporters Trust, models shirt four, which finished in third place, with 1,275 votes.

He said: “Personally, I would have gone with the plain blue.

The 56-year-old from Penarth has been following the team since 1962.

“In those 52 years, I have only missed 12 home games and I was hospital for some of those,” he said.

Reflecting on the winning design, he said: “I think shirt three was always going to win.

“In the 1970s, Tony Villars had his car – a TR7 – painted in the team colours, with that stripe down the side.”

Explaining the Trust’s involvement in the project, he added: “We need to provide this alternative for the fans because the club is not going to give it to us.”

In last place, with 1,248 votes was shirt two, which is modelled by Ben James.

The 26-year-old from Roath said: “I voted for the winning design, so I’m really pleased with the outcome.

He added: “I remember Robin Friday wearing a similar kit in the 70s and I think it is an iconic design.”

Robin Friday

Ben, who writes a blog called View From The Ninian, said: “As far as I’m concerned, blue is the club. Blue is our tradition and blue is what makes the club special.

“If all the fans started wearing these shirts, it would give a very strong message to Vincent Tan. It would show him that blue is our colour.”

The idea, which is backed by all the major supporters’ groups, is the brainchild of trust member and long standing supporter Phil Jones.

He said: “The response has been fantastic. It’s been brilliant to see so many people getting enthusiastic about this project and it’s great to see the whole idea come to fruition.”

He added: “People have voted and they’ve made their choice, so now it would be great for everyone to go and buy the shirt.”

The winning design will be available to order directly from Kukri Sports online shop with kids’ shirts costing £22 and adult sizes priced at £27.

And £5 from the sale of every shirt will go to South Wales children’s hospice Ty Hafan.

As well as Cardiff City Supporters Trust, firmly behind this project are Cardiff City Supporters Club, Bluebirds Unite, the London-based 1927 Club and Cardiff City messageboards – CCMB and Cardiff City Forum, who are all backing the idea.

Bluebirds fan Phil Morris, the owner of Kukri who has described Vincent Tan’s Cardiff City re-brand as “strange” and “unusual”, said: “When we were asked could we help produce the shirt I had no hesitation in saying yes.

“Hopefully we can manufacture a shirt that fans will be proud to wear.”

After casting their votes on WalesOnline, Bluebirds from around the globe have been giving us their support.

Richard Davies said: “I grew up watching Cardiff City playing in blue.

“We were a poor old Division Two side and it was never about top flight football, it was about watching my side, with my dad, playing in blue and with a bluebird on its crest.

“Football is about tradition and identity not the Premier League and after two years of playing in a colour completely alien to Cardiff City, I think
red is an insult to its supporters.”

Kevin Davies said: “I think the blue shirts are wonderful.”

Jacob Fretwell said: “Great idea with the new shirt designs. Hopefully Vincent Tan will feel a slight dent in his deep pockets and will end this red nonsense.”

This has always been my favourite City shirt so I'm over the moon, but not surprised, that it has won the ballot as so many fans of my generation see this as an "Iconic" design. I'll be buying one and wearing it with pride at every game I attend next season.

Well done to the Trust, MediaWales, CCSC and the messageboards for getting this project going and I hope the shirts sell in the thousands.

I'm sorry but it looks rather crap quality from the photos, whether it's just the people modelling them I don't know but 1 looks the best in the flesh IMO.

All the shirt images featured are prototypes. For instance, all of the actual shirts will have woven badges.

The one Sian is wearing is a large mans! So it's way too big for her.

The quality of the material is great though. It's the same fabric that I wear for my running gear.

Well I will not be buying that retro shirt, don't like it, if it was number 1 (got my vote) or even number 2, I would have bought one, number 3 old fashioned, instead I will send a donation to Ty Hafan.

I wouldn't care if it was made out of itchy loft insulation. I'd still be buying one. Its blue and makes a statement and the right one.

Looking forward to getting one of these. Won't lie. I've bought both red shirts, and will likely but this years one too, as good or bad they are now a part of our clubs history, but it will be this blue supporters shirt I wear to every game next year. And at £27, goes to show how clubs rip off their fans with all this £50 nonsense.

Cant argue with the donation bit but we are being a tad precious aren't we regarding a great design which will do the job perfectly?.

Given the vote was so close surly they could make both, I really don't like the stripe and hate the collar, think I'll just give a donation to Ty Hafan and see if there are any of the all blue ones on ebay

Not a fan of collars on shirts myself either. The great thing with the design of the winning shirt is the the collar can be very easily (and completely neatly) folded inwards to please those of us who are collar averse.

OK that's good, but I just don't get the whole yellow stripe shit it's hideous, the all blue one looked so much better only 4 votes separating the 2 I think they should make both they'll make more money imo

Respect your opinion. Views of shirt designs are always going to be very subjective.

Agree with this.

Alfie, as the vote only differed by 4 votes any chance of a run of the blue and white shirt.

It will definitely sell and is more in line with our original colours.

Obviously just as many went for it over the winning one so there will be buyers.

Or can I have the sample. :)

would have preferred the all blue one. Why cant they
produce the 2 of them, more money to be made.

FAO ANNIS, SIAN , TRUST ETC.

I would like to add my congratulations to everyone involved in this project and I think the winning shirt is excellent.
The fact that £5 for every shirt sold will go to Ty Hafan is also an incredible gesture.
As a matter of interest what happens to the balance of the profit ?
Does it go to the Trust ?
OR IS IT SPLIT BETWEEN ALL THE PARTIES INVOLVED ie Manufacturer of the shirt , Bluebirds Unite , The forum , Shirt Designer etc.
Or is it kept in a separate fund which will go towards buying some shares in the Club should Tan leave?
Not trying to be nosy or cause any hassle to anyone, just interested.

Great Job and well done all involved,

Steve :bluescarf: :bluescarf:
