' Battle on for Steven Caulker '
by MATTHEW HARRIS

TUESDAY APRIL 29th, 2014

The press seem adamant that Steven Caulker will leave Cardiff at the end of the campaign if the Welsh side are plunged straight back into the Championship. That scenario is looking more likely after a 4-0 defeat to Sunderland at the weekend left the Bluebirds at the foot of the table and they must earn points in their remaining two games against Newcastle and Chelsea.

Caulker has been the stand out performer in a leaky defence that has seen the side let in 69 goals in this campaign – even more than ourselves – and it’s unlikely that the 22 year old, who retains England ambitions, will want to spend a season in English football’s second tier.

As a former Spurs player, a return to White Hart Lane may appeal but it would also be foolish to think we will be the only team lining up for Caulker’s signature. Liverpool have issues at the back amidst concerns over Daniel Agger’s form and manager Brendan Rodgers has first hand experience of the player from his loan spell at Swansea. The Reds can also offer Champions League football next year.

In hindsight, selling Steven Caulker was big mistake but will the player be tempted by a move back to Spurs or does his future lie elsewhere?

Lets hope a bidding war happens and we end up getting a few mill more than we paid for him

Had a great season for us but don't see him as a top four team player and certainly not champions league standard

He will surely leave. Not sure he is as good as what people suggest though, but he has youth on his side and bags of potential given the right guidance.

Dont Spurs have a clause to buy him back for the same amount as you bought him?

I've heard there is no such clause for Spurs to buy him back, he would surely go for a small fortune.

Levy is a canny bugger, wouldnt surprise me if it is true.

But you should get £9m for him anyway id say.

Isn't the buyback clause more like a first refusal?, I suspect they could attempt to take him back to White Hart Lane but the player can make up his own mind where he goes?

id take that all day and be happy about it.

hes a good player no doubt. but hes playing with people who cant defend so will never look his best in our team.

Good player but needs to read the game better and he is no captain.he is going to get better, but i fear not with us. :ayatollah:

I usually get sentimental about players but I don't really care if Caulker goes. I think this season, more than any, we've been crying out for a captain who's a genuine leader and Caulker ain't that. Don't get me wrong, he's a good defender, but I'd be happy to let him go if we made some money off him.

I think he has been decent, about 8m seems about right for him in my opinion, I cant help but feel a little dissapointed with him though, I thought we had a bargain when he joined but we just got value in the end. Maybe at anotehr club he can step up his game.

Pretty sure the buy out clause is that Spurs receive 50% of whatever we sell him for.

Im guessing thats for anything over the original 8m? Surely they cant just buy him back for 8m and then get 4m back

Over 11m I think, so we could avoid it. We'd be much better off selling him for 10m than 19m!

Seems fair.

To be honest I cant see is getting more than 8m anyway

I'd take 8m. He's been good but not irreplaceable.

I dont think a CB of his value and wages is needed in the championship either.

Indeed, as evidenced by Turner/Hudson partnership winning the league. We'll be fine without him.

What about loaning him?

Keeps him happy as he gets to play at the highest level for another season.

Works well for us as he's off the wage bill and comes back to us a better player for it.

Assuming we get back to the Prem first attempt

I agree with you 2.

Similar for Medel. I'd be looking for us to get 1 or even 2 experienced midfielders/defenders to stabilise our team and give us some leadership and mental toughness.

We don't need £10m players on huge salaries in the Championship, just the right players and I believe we already have the nucleus of a decent young squad even if we have to let 5-6 stars go... IF we go down.

Tottenham will not take Caulker back, they sold him because he had big gambling problems and they were paying off a lot of his debt.

Also why he was loaned to Swansea, Redknapp got in touch with John Hartson to help him out and attend GA.

His problems continued when he was with us in that department.

Working within the media you pick up "titbits" here and there. I dont think this was the only issue that Daniel Levy had with him ;)
