Gus Poyet claimed he would prefer Cardiff to turn up in Real Madrid shirts at the Stadium of Light on Sunday after their stunning win at Chelsea.
The Sunderland chief is convinced his team raise their game for the biggest clubs after dramatic victories over Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea this season.
Sunderland remain bottom of the Barclays Premier League after their 2-1 win at Chelsea, but have four games to save themselves.
They are now just three points away off safety and face a massive game against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s fellow strugglers at the Stadium of Light next weekend.
Poyet said: ‘I don’t know if Cardiff can play with a Real Madrd shirt on Sunday, then that could be an option.
‘The situation is that we must believe. If the players don’t buy into this, you are dead.
‘You don’t think this was a miracle today? Thank you very much. I was right. We needed something special.
‘You can’t imagine how many people have said to me in the last couple of weeks, “you need to win the last four".
‘We played Manchester City and Chelsea before those four. That means that people, good friends, were not expecting a lot from us from these two games. But we proved them wrong.
‘To be the first team somehow to beat Mourinho’s Chelsea at home is a privilege and a little bit of mixed emotions because of course I have been here and I know how important it was for Chelsea and the players this game.
