It seems as though every game at home, many of our fans and even some of our players keep talking about it being a must win game.
Of course, we would benefit massively from as many wins as possible.
What happens though, if we play really well and get a draw against Hull ?
We will not be relegated immediately after that game. Yes it makes things more difficult, but as long as we stay in touch or even better close the gap or overtake at least three teams then that is all that matters.
Getting a draw in the unpredictable league is NOT the end of the world. A loss and losing 3 points to one of the teams in our mini league would be obviously a bad result.
Fear of failure increases the pressure of expectation and the more neutral in our thinking the more we all relax and perform to the best of our collective abilities as players and fans.
That is the best mindset for all of us to most likely succeed, rather than one of massive expectations, grievous disappointments if the result doesn't go to plan and ever increasing tension.
Fans, players and the manager alike need to stop heaping more and more pressure on the team as it adversely affects performance.
Don't mean for this to sound like a lecture, but we all want us to succeed as much as humanly possible in each game and in my experience as a Sports Psychologist, neutral thinking with a confident mindset in the players own and collective ability, with excellent practice and greater player understandings and communications between each other and the manager/coaches are the keys to success.
